tea Iv t £|V| AV ' A Everyone goes to the school ahead of time to reg- ister, and get all squared away for the upcoming year, but yet, you ' ve got a strange sensation. Al- though you ' ve been to that same, massive, brick building, with its outdoor courts, located on those by-no-means prominent roads, almost, seemingly surrounded by trees, and yet . . . sprouting from the earth in the middle of a field, so many times before, — still you feel odd. The summer ' s not over, and it doesn ' t seem right going through those huge glass doors and entering that large, echoing main hall. It ' s like an omen of things to come, and for a moment, you stop to reflect on what it ' ll be like back in school, but then, back to the matter at hand you proceed toward the guidance office to register. But there you find kids, and kids, and more kids. You spot a friend, exchange your first hellos, and decide to wander about rather than stand in a line that seems like it ' ll surely last for at least two days. When you return, you finally reach the counselors, you ' re handed some papers, a brief (and I mean brief) ex- planation, and shoved aside to keep things moving. With the question in your mind — But, what do I do with this junk, how when? , — you walk back out the doors, return to ycur car, and head for home — but not untouched by the somewhat gladdening, frightening, disgusting, or just plain realization of the inevitable future. Anything from blue-jeans to fancy dresses, from short-shorts to maxis go. Everybody just goes about wearing whatever they darned well please, and doin ' their thing as far as clothes go. And it doesn ' t matter whether their thing is as far from what everyone else is wearing as it can be, or whether it ' s the bobsy-twin look. They have clogs, tennis shoes, bobby socks, knickers, and saddle shoes. Long hair, short hair, no hair — any- thing goes. You may run out of things to do anywhere else in the world, it seems, but you can always have plenty to do while you ' re in school. It ' s as if you are con- stantly running, running, running either physically, or mentally twenty-four hours a day as long as you ' re involved in any way with school. There are so many things that you ' d like to be in, so many things to do, and yet . . it would seem that no matter what you decide on, there ' s never time enough for it all. There ' s school itself, schoolwork to do outside of school, sports events, and then clubs and their activ- ities on top of that. At times you might think that you go to school, straight to a club meeting, get home and rush off to a ballgame of some sort, and then home again to do your homework, and finally, back to school again, — seemingly, all without stopping even to take a breath. It ' s true that often times, you can expect to be bored right out of your mind, but you ' re always kept busy! TO DO 7 it ' aRA ■ • • ' . Coach Hanacher introduced a new position on the team — the Menehune. They fought hard and long and did their best, and kept on hoping for a winning play. The Kougars didn ' t have the best year for winning foot- ball games, but we had a great year for learning about defeat, and how to turn defeat into a victory for sportsmanship. 9th Cra South North Judson Thomas Jefferson Volpo Rensselaer Ben Franklin Volpo Twin Lakes North Newton 36 28 6 ■ raininess and chilliness and mud puddles . . This is our annual powderpuff football game, of course. Girls from throughout the high school work out to get in shape to prepare for the big night. When that night arrives, they man their gear and romp on out to put on an abso- lutely hilarious game. Although it ' s not supposed to be tackle football, girls are falling to the ground (accidentally, of course!) all the way through the game, and the people roar laugh hard enough to fall off the bleachers. It ' s a change of pace that all the girls enjoy, . . and the spectators love it! ■■■■■■ 17 ►vtiUGA ' i .uuG4 Along with all of the major sports at KVHS, there ' s another, Cross Country. There was a change as far as meets went this year. The two mile run was changed to two and a half miles. With this new aspect, our first school record for the two and a half mile run was set at 14.34, by Ed Jamieson. The team consists of eleven guys who were willing to run their tails off. This is a comparatively unglamorous sport which doesn ' t gain much recognition at all. The guys run from ten to fifteen miles a night for this sport, and the only thing they really get is self-satisfac- tion from doing their best. Some participate to condition for other sports, and some mav join just to participate in 3 sport; but whatever the reason behind it, they deserve to be commended for the effort they put forth. a$uG ft CROSS COUNTRY. To honor those Kougars who did their best in sports, we held the Fall Banquet. Here, the players were given awards and honor jackets. The Kougars may not have had their best season, but they kept trying, striving for a win, learning from their mis- takes, taking pride in the fact that they are Kougars. In every respect, our boys, win or lose, are proud to be called Kougars. 19 the crucible The fall play this year was The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Although the play seemed mainly concerned with the witch trials of early Massa- chusetts, it really explored the fears and prejudices held in the souls of men. The cast portrayed their roles con- vincingly, and the audience was caught up in the action. Perhaps The Crucible was the first serious, mean- ingful production that our Drama Department has presented. It won ' t be the last. This organization is a group of guys who have a common area of interest, and who get together and share their ideas, learn to- gether and have a good time. Throughout the year, they participate in many, many activities ranging from se- lecting a chapter sweetheart, to roller- skating, to cattle judging. All-in-all, the guys have a lot of fun, and also benefit greatly from their experiences in this organization. FFA OFFICERS; Dan Stalbaum, Frank Chernowsky. ROW 2. But that ' s not really the case. They are a bunch of ordinary kids who have had a B average, been in several dubs, and have 70% of the teachers on their side. Another season of basketball has come and gone. Our over all statisti- cal averages kept right up with our opponents averages, but since they didn ' t come together at the right times, and in the right ways, we didn ' t exactly flourish this year. Though our record wasn ' t spectacu- lar this year, our guys can be proud of other things. It ' s true that, at times, disagreements and hastles came up, but they all stuck together and worked as a ' team ' , not individ- uals grouped together, whenever they touched that basketball floor. They kept trying when they were down, strove to climb back up when they were floored, and showed drive and determination for which all can be proud. This last ' 72-73 season was our best season in wrestling so far. We managed to come up with the strongest team we ' ve had yet in our three year history. Our J. V. team was undefeated, and while the varsity team didn ' t have a winning season, they showed quite well at various tournaments and contests. Being in only our sec- ond year in the Northwest Hoosier Conference, we placed second out of six teams. We had three Confer- ence champs this season — Earl Bris- tol, Rusty Beedle, and Ken Pere- grine. We also placed second in the LaLumiere Invitational — which brought home a trophy. At the sectional, we placed fourth among nine teams, and had three sectional winners — Rusty Beedle, Ken Peregrine, and Ray Luedtke. Ken Peregrine and Ray Luedtke went on to place fourth in the re- gional contest. Finally, from the eight teams at the East Gary Tourna- ment, we had one champ — Rusty Beedle. Three trophies were given this year: Most reversals — Gary Bristol — 21; Most takedowns — Ken Pere- grine — 22; Most pins (most impor- tant) — Ken Peregrine — 14 which breaks the old season record of 7 which was set by the same person. A ‘SNOOPY’ CHRISTMAS As you walked into the Christmas dance, you found yourself entering a huge door to a doghouse. Once you were inside, you were surrounded by Snoopy ' s winter wonderland. You saw him immediately decked out in his stocking hat and scarf, and he had decorated his house and tree with lights. There were lighted candles on each table whose flick- ering seemed to confirm throughout the atmosphere of the room, the warmth and good cheer of the yule-tide season. Stockings had even been hung by the chimney with care, and only a real, live fire inside, could have made the fireplace more convincing. Among the twinkling lights and tinsel, the gals in their long dresses, and the guys with suits, danced for hours, enjoying every moment. Cathy Schoon Rose Harrington, Sweetheart FFA SWEETHEART An armload of roses and a sparkly crown went to Rose Har- rington, junior, the night of February 3. It was halftime during the Frontier game when Kathy Riggle, last year ' s FFA Sweet- heart, crowned Rose, thus naming her the new Sweetheart. Other candidates for the title this year were junior Edna Nannenga and sophomores Cathy Schoon and Kim Whitaker. H. Dan Stalbaum escorted the newest Sweetheart off the gym floor. These girls were later honored at the dance that followed the game. Rose now began a year of official duties which includes acting as hostess at all meetings and dinners for the boys. Kim Whitaker 35 kv’s second sectional The Kankakee Valley Sectional got long after the first night. We lost. But the preparation was fun and work was interesting. The feeling of pride never quit because of defeat, but found new outlets in the quality of service and ef- ficiency with which the refreshments were served and the guest accommidated. Most of us were happy that it was “little ' ' Hebron who went home with our nets instead of “rival Rensselaer. 36 37 1ft I A % JZJ S , A wm ■ ' . iV 4 ’ JM GAA ROW 1: Coach Pantos, Karen Richie, Peggy Patterson, Rose Anderson, Lisa Halliwell, Barb Beedle. At times the two top administra- tors might be merely relaxing, but the minute a student caught skip- ping school or classes or caught smoking enters the scene — the mood quickly alters to seriousness and discipline. One observes another mood in the person of Mrs. McClugage. Our school secretary combines pleasant- ness, humor, efficiency, and under- standing as she helps untangle the daily problems of KVHS. 1973 saw her display further skills as she did cartwheels one day. Or how about analyzing the office behavior of Mr. Hamacher? It wasn ' t always easy, but it proved an interesting course. In the regular classes Mr. S. sang for his students, Mr. K. got his class involved in a world war simulation, and Mr. B. drove his students up the wall. That was OUR Social Studies department. 54 a never-ending experience Verbs, nouns, sentence patterns, litera- ture — where does it all end? It doesn ' t. English is a never-ending experience. All girls must, of course, learn to cook, sew, and manage a household, so that is where our Home Ec. department comes in. Often, Home Ec. is considered an easy course, but there is lots of work involved, too. Like when the seniors tried to make blazers. They never thought that those jackets would be SO much work. And those tests, well they aren ' t easy. But the eating part in cooking isn ' t too bad. The finished dresses and pants and such are usually nice to have, too; so, all in all Home Ec. is a learning experience, with fringe benefits. G3” cars, chess boards and rulers . . . The girls have their home ec. depart- ment, and the guys have their shop classes. Buzzing, hammering, sawing, measur- ing, figuring, tinkering — using machi- nery to build beautiful furniture, useful knick-knacks, or interesting things (like making chess boards to sell in the ' Kave. ' ) Or goofing around with old cars and en- gines, to improve them. Doing what you ' re suppose to, and a few things that you ' re not. Whatever you can get away with to have a good time. pe students canoe for exercise A canoe trip from Crawfordsville marked the finish of a novel experi- ence in physical education this year. We played volleyball, soccer and the usual group sports, but time was al- lowed for archery, square dancing and trampoline. The President ' s Physical Fitness Program was incorporated into the program and test given early this May indicated those who met the standards set out by the Commission. Co-ed activities and the rise of girls ' participation in inter-mural sports caused the Kougar ladies to become more involved in the PE program. languages go independent Since we ' ve been in the new build- ing, we ' ve acquired a good many great new facilities. Among these are those contained in our language lab, it is now possible for our students to develop their French and Spanish skills more individually. Toward the end of the year, a new independent study program was set up for the language students, which was aided immensely by the lab equip- ment. This is a constantly changing department as the use of facilities is developed still further. It is es- sential for man, in order to express himself either visually or verbally, to not just look around him, but rather to see what is there. Whether it be beauty, ugliness or tragedy, man must see and then make an effort to understand what is happening in his world. He must form judgements and then by creating artistically ex- press himself in a visual way. All past civilizations have left rec- ords through their artwork. Much of what we know of the past is due to man ' s desire to communicate through the arts. It is no different today. It is the desire of the art depart- ment to open up to our students an appreciation for art, and to teach them basic skills that will enable them to say something visually about the world in which they live. leanne Crieser ROW ONE; Chris Brown, John Ludwig, Jayne Kruizenga, Lisa Halliwell, Sue Lageveen, Sue Lowe, Mary Castle. An immensely important depart- ment is, of course, the Math Depart- ment. It is due to the presence of this department that we are able to tell by how many points we lost a ballgame. Without it, how could our students know how many wacks they got from Mr. Crawford. And last, but not least, how else could you determine how many minutes and how many steps it takes to get to your next class without getting there early? On the other hand, you could learn to tell how tall the school is by looking at the flagpole; figure the probabilities of some really strange things happening; or calculate the number of stars in a given area of the sky, and how long it would take to get to them. Both projects received funds from the sale of popcorn, candy, and can- dy apples at all home football and basketball games. Sunshine work balanced well with social activities, led off by a chips and coke ice breaker for freshmen girls in September. Initiation soon followed. Then came the annual Christmas Dance, the Mother- Daughter Salad Bar, Daddy Date Night, and a slumber party occupy- ing the entire first floor of KVHS. To end the season, the club held the Ideal Lady ' s Tea in May. Kankakee Valley sent its members to both the district and state con- ventions of Sunshine Girls this year. TOP: Sophomores. May 5 saw the Class of 74 hosting the seniors to their annual prom at Halleck Center, St. Joseph ' s College Rensselaer. Ninety couples delighted in Oriental atmosphere and handled chopsticks for the first time. Focal point for the decorations was a group of Ming trees and a bamboo bridge. Admonishing guests was a sign on the bridge, which read: Maximum weight 5 ounces. General Chairman was John Conley, junior class president. John presided over the creation and placement of Oriental lanterns, miniature Buddhas and Giesha girl replicas, parasols, fans, and wall hangings of carp. The banquet ended with a snap as each guest broke open his fortune cookie to learr what the future held. The immediate future for all was dancing to the strains of Syndicate-V amid Oriental splendor until midnight. 80 — BASEBALL VARSITY BASEBALL, ROW 7: Tim Schultz, John Spurgeon, Tim McClugage, Ron Har- ring, Brian Meyers, ROW 2: John Compton, Lance Cheever, Kieth Peregrine, Jeff Spur- geon, ROW 3: Coach Patty, Ray Rozhon, Mike Hanley, Bill Tillema, Dan Hamstra, Coach Smock. Another ban- quet and awards program starts. The cafeteria fills to capacity and then some more. Only 20 minutes late, the invocation marks the beginning of the trip through the gym to the food tables. In the auditorium, after the eating, those coveted awards for outstanding athletic service are pre- sented before proud Kougars and parents. Steve Sytsma needed help carrying his five varsity awards off the stage. The awards were very important to many students this year; a building year, “it was all over — 12 long years in one and a half short hours.” It all started with a unique Senior Class picture — with two Mr, Pyskas and two Mrs. Hangers. Then came practice for the first baccalaureate, commencement exercises held out on the football field. We were finally beginning to realize that our high school days were coming to an end. Garbed in burgandy, we made our way onto the field, while the band played the traditional Pomp and Cir- cumstance,” with Dean Barker our special student following in a wheel- chair. The sun was warm and the wind was gusty, it took a few more hats with every try. After the address to the graduates by Reverend August Tellinghuisen, the salutatorian address by Tanya Williams, and the valedictorian address by Carol Deardorff, it was finally time to receive our diplomas. Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort — than to be comforted; To understand — than to be understood; To love — than to be loved; For It is by giving — that one receives; It is by self-forgetting — that one finds; It is by forgetting — that one is forgiven; It is by dying — that one awakens to eternal life. The staff dwindled, almost died, but found enough life to barely get out the Kougar Pride in time. Apathy knifed even the most enthusiastic attempts at organization. Sales dropped, advertisers were reluctant, and talent hid. Three business managers in succession could not put together a budget between them. Long hours with only two or three staff members mustered was the rule, not exception. But more effort by those who kept going gives the Pride more of just that ingredient indicated in its name. We work on hopes that our efforts not acknowledged during the year will be rewarded with pride in a good product for our friends at KV.
