The house lights dimmed and the curtains slowly drew open to present DRACULA, the first play ever per- formed in the KV auditorium. Many weeks of hard work were spent prior to the performance. Lines and blocking were learned, costumes fitted, and make-up was designed to go with each character. This meant changing Dracula ' s (Jeff DeBoer) blond hair to black. Beards and mous- taches also had to be made for Van- Helsing (George Grevenstuk) and Dr. Seward (John Tillema). The artisitic make-up transformed them into en- tirely different people. The leading female part was played by Susie Nordstrom with her devoted fiancee Jonathon (Mike Hopkins) always at her side. All members of the cast played their characters beautifully. Although DRACULA was meant to be a serious drama, some of the younger people in the audience thought a few parts to be extremely funny such as the maniac (Ed Tillema) howling on the stage, and the maid (Joan Kingma; slapping Butterworth (Butch Jungles). DRACULA was under the direction of Carole Womelsdorff. The combina- tion of her coaching and the cast’s hard work, made KV ' s first play a tremendous success. 20 2 Future Farmers of America Including the greenhand newcomer and chapter star farmer the FFA is one of the most active clubs in school. Becky Walden Carol Deardorff in action National Honor Society breaks with tradition In the past it has been the tradition for the NHS to visit a college and other places of interest. This year they broke that tradition. Because of too little time, money, and interest they were unable to continue the tradition. Every year induction is held for all students who meet the requirements. This year the NHS inducted the largest group in its history. Knowledge, leadership, scholarship, service, and charac- ter combined to make up the foundation for the organiza- tion. To be a member, a student must maintain a B average participate in two extra-curricular activities, and remain in the good graces of the teachers. 36 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY. The cast became involved with their acting, learning new gestures that would sometimes send everyone into hysterics. Between scenery changes entertainment was provided by a bar- bershop sextet and a few other singers . The scenery extended itself into the audito- rium. Banners of red, white, and blue were draped over the doorways and along the walls. The audience got right into the spirit of the play. They would boo the villian and applaud the hero. The musicial background also helped to achieve the desired response from the audience. Precious and Few A beautiful starlit night, flowers, elegance, a super-good band, an excellent tasty meal. Perhaps they will help you. (1) I would do everything in my capability to continue my education on through high school and preferably col- lege. Those doors (to career opportuni- ties) won ' t open any more without di- plomas. You must have a good background. (2) I would be patriotic. I would have a sense of duty to my country, to my school, to my city, and to my State. I think it is extremely important that we keep this sense of being proud to be an American. I hope you all have it, and I hope you never lose it . (3) I would be religious. This sometimes seems to be out-of-date . . . But I hope that all of you continue your religion. I hope that none of you ever feels ashamed to have and to profess a basic belief in God. This is important. (4) The next thing I would do is make sure I have a sense of honor. I would be honest with my fellow Ameri- cans, with my fellow students, with my teachers, and I would be honest with myself. These basic virtues have not grown obsolete. (5) I think this is something often overlooked, but I would have a sense of pride in myself. I would keep myself neat. I would be very proud to be a citi- zen of this wonderful country.
