Moving r i g h t a I o n g. L i f e ' s theme and the theme for the 1982-1983 I-lurri-Kane year- book. Chosen not only because of the meaning to us but to the world surround- l our life we never stand ing us. n still. We are always moving right along on the roads of school, life and time If we think about it, there is never a time when we aren't moving in a constant f l f . lt never allows us to struggle with the road o i e d all the things we want to do. We must keep o moving right along on this road in order to accomplish the goals we have set for ourselves. Even so, the road is full of twists and turns, leading us this way and that and occasionally a detour is thrown in to alter our course. The roads of school keep us constantly moving, from the first time we travel to kindergarten, crying because we wanted to go home, to the last day, graduation, which we spend crying because we don't want to leave. We are kept moving all the time, along this sometimes bumpy road, from elementary school to Junior High and finally to the end of this road, Senior High. As we reflect upon the past, it is hard to believe that those thirteen long years could go by so quickly. At the end of this road we come to an intersection. We must follow our own roads now. The roads of college, trade school, marriage, jobs and the fullfillment of our dreams with all of these branching in different directions. The unknown lies ahead where we may find success or we find a dead end and retrace the tracks. The highway that once bonded us together has now set us free, but some day soon our own separate roads that have taken us so far away will cross ' H' h where our road first and bring us together once again here at Kane ig , began. He's willing to give advice and he's behind the student all the way. He's our superinten- dent. Everyone dreads being sent to his of- fice, but he's actually a nice guy. He runs our school. His approval is often sought. He's our principal. They spend hours planning lessons and standing at the head of a classroom, lec- turing, explaining, and teaching. They willingly offer help. They're our teachers. They give advice and guide the student on the right path to his future. They're our counselors. Their purpose is to provide the best education possible in our district. They're our school baord. They answer many questions, work hard to keep things running smoothly. They're our secretaries. They slave over pots and pans in a hot kitchen every day preparing our lunches, then cleaning up. They're our cooks. They've got the dirty work - cleaning up after many students each day. They're our custodians. Turn the page and meet our faculty. FACULTY Attention Class S 6.1-I-N we Principal's Message CLASS OF '83 Now that the end of your scholastic experience is here, many of you, undoubt- edly, feel a sense of relief and perhaps a little sadness. Having endured approxi- mately 14,000 hours of formal instruction and personal attention over the past twelve years certainly entitles you to such feeling. Hopefully, this education exper- ience has adequately prepared you to as- sume a contributing role in our society. If you are to leave Kane High with but one thought may it be a conscious aware- ness of the importance of knowledge. Con- tinued pursuit and understanding of it will open many doors regardless what career you have chosen. ln closing, please accept my congratula- tions and my best wishes for health and happiness to all. Through- out the year, she could be found in room 203 teaching English II, Speech, Social Protest, and English IV, as well as in the music room directing Chorus and Choraliers. Mastery Learning was also introduced to English students this year. To achieve mas- tery, the learner had to score eighty percent or better on tests and quizzes. If mastery was not achieved, a second examination was giv- en. This new technique was well received by both students and faculty and gave a new outlook to the study of English at Kane High. Fine Arts Develop Creativity ln Students Kane High was very fortunate to have five excellent fine arts teachers this year. Mrs. Hartman introduced students to the world of drama through the Theater Arts classes. They learned basic acting skills, stage design, and lighting, as well as many other aspects of dramatics. Various pro- ductions highlighted this year. Art students were instructed by Mr. Brown in the many branches of art. Jewel- ry making, crafts, and water color painting were some of the courses offered. The music program underwent change this year with the introduction of Mrs. Carlson as director of the Choraliers and Chorus. Mr. Schmidt focused his attention on the Marching Band and Symphonic Band. The Orchestra was under the direc- tion of Mrs. Schmidt. Each group per- formed in various concerts throughout the year. Through the Fine Arts, students were offered the opportunity to be cre- ative while learning and having fun. Mr. D. Brown Art Mrs. J. Kane High's Cooks and Custodians: The Best Around Kane High is privileged to have a terrific group of cooks this year. Each day they arrive early to prepare a hot lunch for students and faculty, as well as students from Clay Street Elementary school. The work of our custodians is apparant as soon as one walks through the doors of K.H.S. The spotless halls, clean restrooms, and bright comfortable classrooms, are kept that way through their work. Outdoor maintenance, such as mowing the lawn in the spring and fall, or shoveling walkways in winter, is also taken care of by the custodians. Meeting once a month on the second Tuesday, the board consists of nine members, a board secre- tary, and a solicitor. These dedicated peo- ple are elected to their positions by the voters of the community and serve as the community's voice in the school system. The school board has three main responsi- bilities: policy making, executing, and ap- praising situations that arise. Board mem- bers spend many hours carrying out these responsibilities. The school board strives to give students of the Kane Area School District the best education possible. The picture above shows board members at their monthly meeting. A 71 Athlete is a person trained in exercises, games, or contests requiring physical strength, skill, stamina, speed, etc. Dedication is to set apart for a special purpose, devote to some work, duty. Team is a group of people working or playing together, especially as one side in a contest. Spirit is enthusiastic loyalty. Sport - any activity or experience that gives enjoyment or recreation and carried on according to some traditional form or set of values. Kane High takes all the ingredients, mixes and produces excellent and excelling teams. N ,af SPORTS Glorious Guys and Gals Inexperience, quickness, scrambling defense, quick hitting and determination are the qualities that combined to form the most successful volleyball season ever. Building a team from only four returning varsity letter winners should have classi- fied this season as a rebuilding year but, using basic skills developed while playing Junior Varsity, the squad rapidly evolved into a very powerful unit. The team played a 5-1 offense to take advantage of Linda Carlsson's exceptional setting skills. Quick spikes by Wendi Jenkins and Janet Parana and a powerful outside attack by Barb Phillips and transfer senior, Pam Furman, developed into the most diversi- fied offense in the district. Defensively, Lisa The Kamikaze Forsyth set the pace by leading the team in outstanding saves. The ability of the entire team to always keep the ball in play was the most important factor relating to setting up a powerful attack. The first annual Kane volleyball tourna- ment was highlighted by the outstanding final match between Clearfield and the Wolves. Even though losing an over- time heartbreaker, this match proved the true ability level of the team. Seniors Janet and Linda were picked as tourna- ment MVP's and they joined Wendi and Barb on the All-Tournament Team. A 3rd place finish at the Cochranton Tourney proved that the Wolves could compete successfully with the high-powered Dis- trict X teams. The climax of a most successful season came with a first ever District IX cham- pionship and a trip to the State Tourna- ment at Shippensburg. Losing only three players via gradu- ation should set the stage for a very suc- cessful season in '83. Overall team depth, quickness and defensive ability should compensate for a lack of height as the Wolves chase the goal of reaching the fi- nal four at the State Tourney. The thinclads' 1982 season was as close to perfect as a team could get: a 6-0 dual meet record and McKean County, Alkin League and District IX champion- ships. An early season highlight was a 3rd place finish at the Kane Invite. Kane's overall strength was demonstrated at dis- tricts where a Kane athlete scored in ev- ery event. Individual district champs were Tom Anderson, shot put, Tom Horton, pole vault: Tom McKenna, 800 and 1600 meter runs. Kane also sent Doug Ander- son, Rob Magnuson, Rob Williamson and the 3200 meter relay team to states. Tom Horton vaulted to a 4th place finish at states while Rob Magnuson placed 6th in the discus. Recipients of the outstanding track and fieldman awards were Jamie DeWalt and Tom Anderson. Tom McKen- na received the James Manners Award for being the outstanding athlete in Dis- trict IX. Next year's outlook is very prom- ising, Kane has enough talent to win their 3rd consecutive District IX title. Row lll: J. Girts, B. McKinney, M. Batista, E. Parana M. Whittemore, S. Mix, P. And place they did, finishing third which gave Kane its sixth title in five years. Individual district champs were Lori Robinson, 3200 meter run, and JoAnne Kocjancic, triple jump. JoAnne also competed in the long jump at states while Jeanne Batista ran the 400 meter run at Shippensburg. Along with a 5 and 2 dual meet record, the Wolves also outclassed their competition to win the McKean County and Alkin League championships. The award for the most points scored during the season went to JoAnne Kocjancic while multi-talented Jas net Parana received the award for the most outstanding performer. Critical Injuries Cause the Wolves r The 1982 Kane Wolves team faced many adversities but showed a never- say- die spirit throughout the season. A major setback was the loss of quarterback Rob Williamson midway through the schedule. The high-powered offense led the Wolves to the 4th highest scoring total in the Big 30 averaging 21 points per game. De- fense gave up an average of 12.4 points per game. The Wolves' offensive attack was led by Rob Williamson and Jeff Koc- jancic passing to Tom Horton and Frank Bergman, while Doug and Joe Anderson provided the running attack. To everyone's surprise, the Wolves won the Big Valley Invite, but soon thereafter sickness, injuries and inconsistency set in and depleted the squad's overall strength. The squad finished with a 3 and 2 dual meet record. Districts were held at Kane, but the home course advantage didn't help the Wolves. For the first time in 14 years, Kane failed to place 1st or 2nd, Tom McKenna and Dan Reigel were the only members of the 3rd place Wolves to go to States. Most teams would have felt this was a good season, but trying to keep up with the shadows of past excellence can make a season seem poorer than it really was. Even after a 3rd place at Districts the team still ranked in the top six or eight teams in northwestern PA. Next year's team will have to rely on team running to try to regain the top qual- ity always exemplified by Kane X-C. 90 1982 Marks End of a Row I: D. Chirillo, H. Davidson, T. Hulings, C. Because of inexperience, the team developed slowly but steadily reaching its peak at the Gannon Invitational where it took top honors. The girls then held this peak to the end of the season by clinching their 5th consecutive District IX cham- pionship and nailing down a solid 6th place at States. Lori and Lisa Robinson were the Wolves' one, two punch with Lori winning the McDowell Invite and the District IX Title and Lisa placing 27th at States for the second highest finish ever for a Kane girl. The 3rd, 4th and 5th spots were held by first year underclassmen Vickie Smith, Jeanne Batista and Linda Sirline. An asset of the team was its excellent depth which came from Lisa Forsyth, Pam Bell, Geor- gia Klara and Kim Ishman. Prospects for next year look great. But after the Christmas break the team went on to win five out of ten games. These latter games consisted mainly of Alkin League contests. Both the varsity and junior varsity teams were coached by first year coaches, Ron Haight and Rick Smith. The line-up built around Steve Kear- ney, the only returning starter from last year's squad. Mark Paup, Dick Hill and Dan Stauffer led the inside scoring attack along with the rebounding. Being talented in scoring and rebounding enabled Andy Haberberger to play both strong and weak forward. The ballhandling and play- making tasks went to the outside men, Rudy Funari and Steve Kearney. The Wolves first win of the season was a thrilling, quadruple-overtime victory over Port Allegany. At the Bradford Christmas Tournament the Wolves grabbed third place by defeating the Hilltoppers of Fre- donia, New York. Steve Kearney was se- lected to the all-tournament team. The season was not quite over at the time of printing, but at that time the Wolves were in third place in the Alkin League and Steve Kearney was leading the Alkin league in scoring. Steve seemed to be assured a spot on the All-Alkin League first team. As part of the new program of the new coach, a junior varsity team of all sopho- mores was selected. This was to give the players experience and build a base for the future. So the next couple of years of Kane High hoops looks very promising. Wolves Overcome Losing Streak Row I: R. Funari, S. The backbone of the Wolves line-up was the lightweights. When injury or sick- ness took a wrestler out of action, there was always somebody to fill in and do a super job. The most exciting lightweight was Todd Hulings, who proved to be the team's take down specialist. Middleweight, Mel Ibanez was a consistant winner along with Tom Rook. They finished in seven- teenth place at the District IX Champion- ship and hope to improve on that mark next year. Kane also competed in the New York-Pennsylvania League for the first time. Senior Mike Gamble was chosen as Most Valuable Player. Kris Furman, a transfer student from Coudersport, showed great promise at the end of the season. ln addition to Gamble and Fur- man, two other players also lettered: Bruce Carty and Joe Wojcik. The school week of a Kane High cheer- leader is a very busy one depending on which sports are in season. During the fall there are varsity football games on Satur- days and junior varsity games on Mon- days. Tuesday and Thursday nights are occupied with girls basketball. When the winter sports season rolls around the cheerleaders cheer for a victo- rious wrestler on Tuesday and Thursday nights and hope for that last-second, game-winning shot against Port when the Wolves take to the court on Tuesday and Friday nights. Who could forget those Wednesday practices after school where they find out how many demerits they got for chewing gum at the wrestling match the night before. After the winter sports are over the girls will try to regain the District IX Cheerlead- ing title that eluded them last year. Perhaps that's because sport means a number of opposite things. It means fact and it means fancy. lt is as tangible as a baseball bat and as intangible as a frosty morningg exciting as a photo-finish, serene as ebb tide It is competitiong composureg memoryg- anticipation. Sport is not all things to all people. ' But today it is something in more different ways to more people than it has ever been before. lt is play for many and work for a few. It is what no one has to do and almost everyone wants to do. lt represents on the one hand, challenges willingly accepted -- and on the other, gambits willingly declined. Its colors are as bright as a cardinal's feathers, as soft as midnight on a mountain trail. It is as loud as Dodger Stadium at the climax of a World Series - and as quiet as snow. . It is exercise and rest. lt is man exuberant and man content. ln America today sport is not just a dream that lies over the rainbow, but an awakening that brings a family together - on a boat or beach, skiing weekend or camping trip. Sport is not art or religion, morals or ideas. But with all of these it shares values which are at least humanly high and always highly human. X By Webster's definition, a student is a per- son who studies, especially in school, and life is the period during which a person or thing is alive. Therefore student life must be the period of time during which a person, who stud- ies, is alive. But student life is much, much, more. lt's all the friends we've made, all the games where we cheered on the Wolves, and all the dances to which we've gone. Student life is all the bits and pieces, the everyday occurences, and the special occasions that make school more than classesg they make it an experience to remember as we move along through the years. The Class of 1983 held the magazine drive September 2-20. The hardworking co-chairmen for the drive were Ramona Stovic and Renee Ol- son. They were assisted by the auditing Drive Proves to Be Successful committee, the art committee, and the homeroom co-captains. The theme of the drive was 'Smurfin' to D. C. Each homeroom was represented by a different Smurf character. Room 207 was the high selling homeroom with a total of S9,539.64. The students of homeroom 207 were treated to a pizza party and each student received a stuffed pac-man. Room 107 finished second with a total of 37,116.56 Each senior had an individual quota of S170 but needed S340 to go on the Sr. Class Trip free of cost. This year the Hi-Life featured such items as Pickles and Petunias, Top Ten, high school sports, student activities, a column devot- ed to increasing student awareness of common teen concerns, poems, stories, and many other featured articles, all writ- ten by Kane high students. Deb and her staff did an excellent job producing many delightful pages in each issue. Their advi- sor is Mrs. Robinson. Due toa lack of snow, Kane High skiers could be seen walking the halls with gloomy looks upon their faces. Until mid- January when they finally hit the slopes. Kane High's band, under the direction of Mr. Jack Schmidt, could be seen marching across football fields and in parades displaying the band front's new uniforms, as well as their talents. The Choralier singing group lit up the stage on concert nights with smiles and colorful tunics, while Mrs. Janet Carlson, a newcomer to KHS, conducted them. Mrs. Carlson also directed the Kane High Chorus. The Madrigals, a group of thirteen choralier members, was directed by Mr. Schmidt. Besides concerts, these singers performed at var- ious dinners and luncheons. The Stage Band, also under the direction of Mr. Schmidt, performed many jazzy selections while sitting behind new red and blue wooden music stands, an appreciated gift received from Mr. Robert Hearst. Last, but definitely not least, is the Orchestra. Under the direction of Mrs. Jack Schmidt, these talented musicians performed beautifically at each concert. Q Kane High was honored to have Becky Olson, Kirsten Benson, Deb Hanson, Sandy DeWalt, and Scott Schul represent them at the PMEA District 2 Choral Festival held at Johnsonburg in November. Becky and Scott climbed higher on the music scale when they traveled to the Regional Choral Festival held in Punxsatawny in March. Special Congratulations go to talented Becky Olson who moved on to bigger and better things when she was chosen to attend the State Choral Festival held in Harrisburg in January. From there she traveled to Boston to sing with the All Eastern Chorus in February. Kane High was also honored to have Kirsten Benson, Phil Spencer, and Karen Johnson represent them at the Midwestern- Northwestern District Orchestra Festival held in Sharon in January. + Students chosen for District Band, held at Meadville in February, include Betsy Austin, Amy Bennet, Alan Kohut, and Kirsten Benson.
