SPORT S Many things have happened over the 1978-1979 school year and I hope in the years to come this Hurri-Kane edition will bring all the memories of this past year back. I would like to express my sincere thanks to my faithful staff for helping to put together this yearbook. It took many long hours of hard work and dedication to make the 1979 Hurri-Kane possible and we all hope you will enjoy it. Sincerely. usmpa wT Debbie Timpano Editor-in-Chief 4 the child not knowing what to see came blindly to the schoolyard filled with tumbling boys and jump roping girls reached a peek but it was time to move on I the classmate bound to be something heroic and confident to be what I could be soon found out it’s better to be an individual I the student trying to find out what's not known questioning every question stepped into this tall box not knowing it doesn't stop at the top Finally reached what I never thought could be reached to find out no one ever told me There's no lid on the box. Julie Mertz DEDICATION OF THE 1979 HURRI-KANE TO MR. LOREN WRIGHT Mr. Loren Wright was a dedicated teacher the whole year around. During the school year he worked with students of all ages, giving instrument instruction to the elementary students, directing the concert band, chorus, orchestra, and his own creation: The Chor-aliers. But his dedication and aggressiveness didn’t stop there. Mr. Wright gave up his summers and worked long hours in the hot sun with the Kane High Marching Band, preparing them for parades, fair competition, and football half-time shows. For all the dedication Mr. Wright has given to us students. the 1979 Hurri-Kane staff would like to express their deep thanks to him by dedicating this yearbook to him. 6 7 THE LAST OF THE SEVENTIES I THE CLASSMATE I’m a classmate and it has been a very important part of my life. I have experienced a great deal of things during my high school years. There were the usual boring classes and days that seemed to take forever. But my classmates and I have shared many good times here at KHS. I have made many good friends, some whom I will know forever yet it is sad to think that there will be many whom I may never see again. Just think, after we graduate and start a new life for ourselves we’ll be back again to celebrate our class reunions. I’ll really be shocked to find that my best friend in high school is now married and has eight kids! Just think of all the fun we’ve had working together whether it was on a homework problem or learning lines for the class play. Working of the Prom and Magazine Drive produced many headaches but there was always time for a good laugh. These high school days can’t last forever and for the seniors they’re just about over, but I’ve really enjoyed my days here at Kane High. In the future I’ll be taking on alot of responsibilities and I’m sure there will be many days that I’ll wish I were back at Old Kane High reliving my high school days. These were just two of the questions answered on April 13 and 14 as the Junior Class Play, Dirty Work in High Places was presented. Many hours of hard work were spent rehearsing, organizing committees, painting scenery and selling tickets. In the end all the work paid off as the play was very well received. 36 SR. I’m involved in many of the extracurricular activities here at Kane High. I’m active, ambicious and constantly busy. Along with the required 1260 hours I spend here at KHS, I devote a great deal of my time to the organizations and clubs to which I belong. There never seems to be a dull moment for me. There are always meetings to attend and projects to be completed. The task of getting homework in on time and studying for tests seems inevitably impossible at times but somehow I manage to get it done. By being involved I have taken on a lot of responsibilities, and in return, I have gained a very important quality, the sense of leadership. Putting forth that extra time and effort to help our school and community have made my days here at Kane High all worth while. ACTIVITIES HURRI - KANE L to R.; D. Peterson. M. Reichard. T. Wile. R. My profession not only requires knowledge and skill, but it requires a great deal of patience and understanding. I have a special talent for teaching and I communicate well with my students. My teaching career is filled with new experiences, each day is different from the next. I unselfishly give up my time and treat each student as an individual. My main objective is to strengthen and develop the mental abilities and capabilities of my students and help prepare them for the future. Being a teacher is far from being an easy job. When my students show their appreciation and gratitude by saying “thank you”, that’s when I feel like I have successfully done my job. 20 SCHOOL BOARD David Malone Joseph Kocjancic Ralph DeCamp Julie Cleland 123 William Rielter James Maxwell I WILL Mr. Brzezinski-a clean closet Mr. Spencer-hair tonic Mr. Dalton-a pair of platform shoes Mr. Robinson-a new key chain Mr. Bloomquist-a new pair of bi-sexual shoes Mrs. Kimbrough-students that don’t do their journals the night before they’re due Mr. Stanko-a new leave of absence for hunting Mrs. Jacobus-a secretary to correct papers Miss Hilty-a yearbook staff that knows what they’re doing. As a student of Kane High I must face seven periods of classes everyday. During these, somes-times long, periods I listen to lectures and take notes, fall asleep during a movie, take a test, daydream, and even get confused (Chemistry, Physics, Trig, Calculus). Even though being a student is a 24 hour job and at 3:10 I still have unfinished homework and tests to study for, I still find time to go to work or practice, play intramurals, swim, participate in clubs, attend sporting events, and have some good times with my friends. Being a student hasn’t been an easy job, and after many years I have learned the basic survial skills of being a student. I guess now, you could call me a ‘‘professional student”. STUDENT LIFE THE CLASS OF PRESENTS JUST YOU AND ME MAY 6, 1978 One of the biggest events of the school year is the Junior-Senior Prom. It’s not an easy job organizing everything and all the work that goes into the decorations is almost unbelievable. The Juniors started working way back in September trying to get everything ready for the big night. Well. May 6 finally arrived. Walking into the Prom and seeing all the beautiful decorations, it was hard to believe that yesterday it was just a plain old cafeteria. The theme for the Prom was Just You and Me and the music was provided by Emotions . The highlight of the evening was the choosing of Ed Vanerstrom as Prom King and the crowning of Beth Sicher as Prom Queen. The night was not yet over. After the Prom everyone went to the Elks for the Post-Prom and danced to the music of ‘Entrance. The night that everyone waited for for so long was finally over. But it will be a night that will never be forgotten. 139 MISS KANE HIGH 140 L. to R. - Row I; Sue Punk. Kathy Slater. Row II: Tina Sicher. Debbie Timpano. Row III: Patty Pearson. Tami Kulka. Row IV; Chcri lican. Nancy Warner. Nine girls from the Class of '79 competed in the Miss Kane High Talent Show. All of the girls performed excellently but Brenda Phillips and her dazzling baton routine, won the hearts of her classmates. Brenda was chosen as the new Miss Kane High and thus represented Kane High at the McKean County Fair Queen Competition. Brenda was kept very busy during the summer months while she attended various dinners and luncheons and made many speeches. She practiced many long hours getting ready for the talent competition at the fair. We were proud to have Brenda as our representative and she did a fantastic job. 141 This year's Homecoming started out with the traditional parade and pep rally. Then the Kane Wolves rallied to a big win over the St. Mary’s Flying Dutchmen. But it was an extra special day for pretty, blonde and blue eyed Jeanine Weaver as she was crowned Homecoming Queen during the halftime festivities. FOOTBALL 143 SELLING MAGAZINES; Mornings full of counting and recounting money, everyone racing to reach their quota and the hog party. These were all parts of the Magazine Drive. The energetic Class of 79 was very successful to say the least. They reached their class quota with a grand total of $33,027, that was enough money to beat last years class and enough to set a new national record per individual sales. Matt Hottel. Patty Pearson and Tom Hall headed the drive and did a great job of getting the drive organized. High salespersons included Karen DeWalt. Rich Caruso. Julie Mertz, Sue Punk, and Judy Udovich. Kane High has had the pr vilege of receiving many exchange students from foreign countries. This year we were very fortunate to have with us Sissy Niitsu. an exchange student from Japan. Sissy came from a small town near Tokyo, called Kushigata where she lives with her family. Sissy is kept very busy here at Kane High. She attends most all of the sports events and is a member of the choraliers and an avid member of the ski dub. As we walk down the hall, we can see some of the fine artwork that Sissy has done. After her stay at Kane. Sissy will return to Japan where she plans on attending college and becoming a teacher. We have thoroughly enjoyed having Sissy as our exchange student and we wish her lots of luck in the future. 150 SETSUKO SISSY NIITSU 151 IF WE HAD CHANCE TO DO IT ALL AGAIN, Yes, I would only take study hall, gym, library, lunch, and I'd go home at 12:00. --Roy Stillman “Yes. to play in the sports again. --Jim Bergman Yes, because with all of the people I’ve met, it’s probably the best time I’ll ever have.” --Tabb Wile I cause I Mostly doing I would go through school again be-was the best time of my life. --Betsy Erickson I would go back through High School, of the good times I’ve had here taking part in the different activities. --Melissa McKenna Yes because there’s so much more to learn.
