Maybe it's taken us a while to realize it, but they're here. Sure all those tests weren't the greatest things in the world and the hours of study grew tiresome after a while, but we made it. And all along the way we knew we were doing what was right and best for us, even though half the time we wouldn't admit it. Good times, yeah, we sure have got them. The good feeling that came when we earned high grades, or had a success, no matter how small. And all our friends; people who really cared. We can't forget the teachers either, many of whom would go to great lengths to help us through our difficulties if we would only let them. But so long as we gave it our best we were all right: we could hold our heads high and keep that inner smile. Good times, yeah, we sure have got them. All the ball games, the anxiety, the hopes, the desires; thrills of victory, agonies of defeat. And acceptance. Good times, yeah, we sure have got them. Remember the Prom?, the gowns and suits, the flowers it was all such fun. We've been through a lot together. In a short while, our high school days will be behind us. We'll be drifting apart and perhaps we'll never meet again But, remember the good times. —Mary Wooditch 5 6 I think a class may be likened to a tree . . . Just as a seedling is nurtured-witli tender care, so too, are these students. I They are carefully fed statistics and memorizable data but the inborn creative desire is also present which enables them to grow and sprout new ideas. The basic theories of education make up the trunk ancl theories stem from this mainspring. Students may feel that they are one with each other in relation to these theories, but as they climb the tree they branch out and develop their own ideas of what they conceive things to be. Old methods are shed and new ones sought. This whole developmental process is very slow and painful. Unfortunately, many never leave the ground. It may be that they are content to remain at the bottom or that they are unaware of the existence of any tree at all. Some students are just 'Tate bloomers ; the'-;potential is present but it takes them a while to realize and utilize this potential. These various types of students are thrust into a building and organized as a class. The experiences which this group shares are numerous, varied and unforgettable. Of course, there comes a time when they must be severed from the trunk in order to enter the next phase of their lives. Mary Wooditch ! H PAUL F. BAUERLE SARAH E. BAUM ANDREA L. BENSON JOSEPH P. GOOD! Girls, that story brings tears to my eyes. This excitement overwhelms me! He'll never guess what I did with that test paper. 55 Nothing like putting your foot in your mouth. Turn on that old STANKO charm. Asa student travels from kindergarten through twelfth grade, he comes in contact with many different teachers. The teacher who is most remembered is the one with whom the student has shared 'good times'. What makes a real teacher? Certainly not an instructor who gives homework and tests without ever rendering any aspect of his own personality. And complete loss of self control or inability to express oneself is not in keeping with our images of the ideal teacher. The person who has a true talent for teaching is one who is able to relate to his students; one who can communicate plus be a friend while still holding authority over a class. He is able to start discussions in which students will enjoy participating and he gives of his time, selflessly. In essence, a teacher expresses concern for all of his students, and, in doing so, aids them in the process known as growing up . Trusted with an essential part of us, our memories, HURRI-KANE strives to faithfully present people and places, good times and bad, and gives us a reference for the future. Pictures and words show what was done, who was there, and how we reacted. HURRI-KANE can be called a scrapbook of many memories. In the HURRI-KANE room, things follow an easy rhythm; doing layouts, writing copy, and thinking up captions until deadlines come near ... As the tempo increases, tempers flare, typing becomes seemingly impossible, and doing anything right is inconceivable. But, the deadlines arc met, the trash emptied, and the floor vacuumed. Normality returns . . . until the next deadline. medication, hard work, and ideas go together to «akc HURRI-KANE a rewarding publication to fork on and receive; a legacy of our times and :hool days for future generations. STUDENT COUNCIL President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Eric Hagman Ken Kane Fran Smith Ann Pearson Student Council's success this year depended on the council members' willingness to work, the leadership of the officers, the guidance of Mr. Brzezinski, and the cooperation of the faculty and student body. A combination of hard work, ingenuity, and fun made many things possible this year. This talented group of juniors and seniors has a reputation for giving outstanding performances, and this year was no exception. Lighting and scenery, as well as the music, were to be commended. The Choralicrs not only sounded great, but looket better than ever in their new outfits purchased by the Music Booster's Club. The opening concert featured Miss Pa., as a talented ventriloquist, and her dummy, Timothy. Next on the agenda was the trip to Erie for a TV taping, and the 20th annual Christmas Concert. Both were successful, despite a broken flute and a few other near catastrophes. Preparations began in January for the Spring Concert which brought to a close another successful year for the Choralicrs. Our Choraliers in red, white and blue; singing for you. FHA The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization whose main objective is to help its members get to know themselves, others, their school and community. These goals arc achieved by working towards degrees; the first two degrees are given local recognition and the third receives state recognition. This year, the girls have been involved in the following activities: giving a party for the senior citizens, caroling for shut-ins, and many have enrolled in the Health Assistant's program. Their teacher, Miss Stehman, feels that through FHA, school and personal living are interrelated. Officers. L. to R., J. Rodgers, B. Bressler, M. Beane, T. Walton. L. to R., R. Bowen, C. Robinson, S. The 1976 Track and Field season was probably the most productive ever. The Wolves won every meet (Invitationals included) in a very convincing fashion. Over all, the Wolves had the most depth, and showed the strongest event by event scoring punch of any Kane team in recent history. Setting school records in all three relays has to be one of the greatest team achievements ever accomplished at Kane. 108 And they're off! 109 It's a bird, a plane . . . Super Perry! ! The team also ranked as one of highest scoring teams in the area. The Wolves finished second in the DuBois Christmas Tournament. The five starters were used a great deal, but the bench responded well whenever called upon. The team was a fine combination of seniors, juniors, and three sophomores. STUDENT LIFE MISS KANE HIGH Brenda Shrubb reigned over the 1976-77 school year after being selected Miss Kane High in May 1976. The class of '77 chose Brenda from among six other candidates. She displayed her talents with a dynamic gymnastic routine. Because of Miss Pennsylvania Teenager rules, Brenda was unable to compete in the McKean County Fair competition. Representing Kane High was Ann Pearson who performed an excellent rendition of Deep Purple on the piano for die talent competition. HOMECOMING 1976 Miss Liz Hall, Homecoming Queen 1976 School spirit was never more pronounced as during Homecoming weekend. The parade, bonfire, crowning of Liz Hall and of course Kane High’s victory over the St. Mary's Dutch men, created an atmosphere of mixed pride and anxiety that would long be remembered. L. To R., Kathy Funari, Jim Carlson, Liz Hall, Kurt C.raybill, Pam Kocjancic, Bruce Leonard, Ann Pearson, Tom Haulik, Vicki Russo, Frank Bostjancic, Linda Huckabonc, Jeff Fragale. 139 MISS PENNSYLVANIA TEENAGER After being crowned Miss Kane High, Brenda Shrubb went on to bigger and better things. In June 1976 Brenda was crowned Miss Pennsylvania Teenager in Butler, Pennsylvania. All contestants for the title were judged on poise, personality, and appearance. Miss Pennsylvania Teenager traveled to West Virginia in August where she attended meetings, dinners, and appeared in parades, on radio, and television. In November 1976 Brenda competed in the nationally televised Miss American Teenager pageant in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. Miss Brenda Shrubb 140 A Child Went Forth . . . There was a child went forth seeking . . . the path of hope, the way of truth, the spirit of love® The path, smooth at first, became rough. Despair, hate, and dishonesty littered the way, but hope, truth, and love, could be found. Hand in hand with companions, the rough areas mattered little but friends took divergent paths--and some were lost . . . forever. And so the years passed-- Kindergarden, elementary school, jr. high, and finally high school. Each year separated by a sunny summer. Innocence and freedom were exchanged, for maturity and responsibility. Some sought for new horizons, and some gave up. Three years passed quickly--And graduation, long awaited . . . arrived -- And a child went forth . . . --Cathy Johnson 141 Wolves On The Run Magazine Drive '77 If one had peeked into the CRC room anytime between September 10-27, he would have seen a shambles of flying tapes, disorganized order forms, discombobulated chatter and mountains of money. I'm speaking of the Senior Magazine Drive. But amidst all of the apparent disorder, Vince DiMaria and Colleen Ilottel, chairpersons of the drive, were systematically running the show. The senior students sold an unbelievable $30,320 worth of magazines! They truly epitomize the old saying, Where there's a will, there's a way. In essence, the class of '77 has earned the title of number one. Where's the party?! Colleen, WHERE is that $500?!! Come fly with me. 142 Faces: School is reflected in the faces of the people who go there. Walking down the hall one will sec the various expressions of the kids. Smiling faces portray laughing, joking, and cheerful students. They enjoy school! It is a privilege not a punishment to go. The angry faces also tell a story. Many are upset by teacher-student disputes. Some are frustrated by the thoughts of their inability to accomplish what must be done. Then there are the sad and expressionless faces. They feel empty; school is a prison. They attend school only because obligated to do so. Once they receive that diploma it’ll be rare to see them in a school again. Taking all the people, throwing them together for 180 days, they will change! The happy may lose their way and become frustrated, while some will stay the same. Maybe the frustrated will become at peace with school, and be able to cope with what may come. Others will give up altogether! Then perhaps the empty kids might seek a goal and be happy. Once they reach this goal, hopefully they will feel school has some meaning. Is school really a building? Isn't it the people that make it what it is? School changes every year as those within its walls change But, aren't we all a mixture of these people at one time or another? --Ann McCloskey 143 Dedication To Learning ---------------------------------fi Pi RlOOIC IAHU Of lilt (tfMINIS 144 —Well, Sometimes 145 ■VJ! 146 Hail Miss Caruso! These persons buy ads, not only to advertise their business, but to help us as well. They want our generation to have good memories of Kane after we graduate and drift throughout the country. Ringing doorbells and knocking on doors are the only ways we have of financing our yearbook. Without the businesspersons behind us, we would never make it off the ground. Think about it. America's Bicentennial came and went with all the pomp and glory it deserved . . . Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald Ford to become the President of the United States. A-bortion, unemployment, and ERA were issues of the campaign . . . Nadia captured the heart of the world with her stunning performance in the Montreal Olympics . . . Supersonic transport became a way of world travel and a subject of controversy with France's Concord. . . Viking II landed on Mars for exploration and provided us with the first shots of the red planet . . . Economics became a major news story when New York City threatened default and federal intervention was necessary . . . Civil war in Lebanon, bombings in Northern Ireland, and the Entebe incident reflected the violence of the year . . . The arrest of Patty Hearst and the Harrises brought an end to the SLA . . . Nature also took her toll. Earthquakes and cold weather caused strife and economic difficulties . . . All these events are important because they become the foundation of the future. Who knows what the summer of '77 and the future holds? 194 Faculty Index DENNIS BERRY Lock Haven State College, B.S. Phys.
