KANE AREA UNION HIGH SCHOOL KANE, PENNSYLVANIA DEDICATION . We, the Class of 1966, dedicate this HURRI-KANE to the memory of Dalton C. Van Ormer, who from 1929 to 1965 served this school untiringly. Mr. Van Ormer Was loved by his students and admired by his colleagues. He had a broad understanding of education, yet he never overlooked a detail of his school's program, providing strong leadership for every Worthwhile endeavor of both student and faculty. 2 FOREWORD The staff of the 1966 Hurri-Kane has to include in one bound volume all the work, study, and activity involved in school life. No book, however can ever express all the personal experiences a student has as he proceeds through Kane High School. Glimpses into the various classes and organizations will give the reader an idea of what composes our school. As we read this year's Hurri-Kane the seniors will be looking back on their life at Kane High, but also ahead to the future. SUPERINTENDENT I feel a special affinity to the class of 1966 because most of you were first graders when I became super- intendent of the Kane Area Schools. I have gloried in your successes and mourned your-failures. I have watched you work and watched you play. Along with your parents, friends, and teachers, I will be interested in your future achievements. As you go through life, it should be assuring to know that many, many people want you to achieve worth- while goals. Count me as one of them. PRINCIPAL The school year of 1965-66 will long be remember- ed by both students and faculty. The year began with the loss of our principal, and this was to cast a dark cloud over the entire school. The faculty and students were forced to rally together to keep our operation moving in a smooth manner. Gradually, we started to settle back to normal pattem and pursue the goals which had been set up by our quest for knowledge. Today the school plays a very important part in our daily lives. It is here we must learn to think, to communicate, to make intelligent decisions, to instill in each a sense of duty, and consequently, to become better individuals and citizens. The role that each of you will play in life will reflect the experience that you have encountered at Kane High School. BOARD OF EDUCATION JFK . To this group of local men falls the task of guiding and controlling our education, for the Board of Edu- cation is the basis of our school system. These ten men meet at the junior High School on the second Thurs- day of each month to discuss the present problems and future plans for our schools. The most recent pro- ject of the Board of Education is the construction of new buildings, and all these time-consuming meetings are entirely for public service. Hurri- Kane follows the same pattern. The different sec- tions are interwoven, until in combination they form a book of memories. Beginning in the fall, staff members work to lay a firm foundation for a good book. As the months pass, each person works progressively on different jobs. These jobs include taking pictures, Writing copy, proof reading, and coordinating the layout. COUNCH Student Council, as the student government of Kane Senior High School, controls school activities throughout the school year. It organizes service projects, plans assemblies, plans cafeteria menus and holds dances and other social events. Student Council is made up of two representatives elected from each homerroom at the beginning of the year, and a faculty advisor, Mr. Vensel. Membership in this organization is limited to five percent, in the junior year, plus ten percent, in the senior year. After the annual tea, during which parents of the students may become better acquainted, the newly elected members are inducted at a service which takes place at the National Honor Picnic in May. Phy Chy was created to broaden the horizons of students interested in further education in chemistry or physics. The club increases the members' knowl- edge and curiosity in science, and encourages them to experiment and construct. Coulter' SENIOR PLAY Cheaper by the Dozen, a comedy taken from the book written by F. B. Gilbreth, lr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, was presented by the Class of 1966. The play centered around the Gilbreth home where the entire family of twelve practiced the most demo- cratic type of family government, the family council. With Stan Politowski, Becky Anderson, and Candy Coulter holding the leading roles, many laughed as the older children tried to skip grades on their father's advice. A large audience watched the per- formance both nights, and each person left with a smile. An unusual three act murder mystery, entitled Bull in a China Closet, was presented on March 24 and 26 by the Class of '67, under the direction of Mr. Vernon VanHorn and student directors, Cindy Oliver and Howard Carley. The play was centered around the lives of six spinsters who develop a mad passion for an Irish homicide detective named Dennis O'Finn. Since the old ladies enjoy O'Finns' company, one of them commits two murders so that O,F inn has to investigate the boarding house in which they live. The Kane VVolves's 1965 football campaign was an altogether pleasing affair as the gridmen posted an admirable record of six wins, two defeats and a lone tie. The Wolves, under the tutelage of Bernard McQuown, displayed a relentless offense, and the scrappy, stingy defensive unit was never overlooked. This season marks the final appearance of Mr. McQuown in his coaching position, as he has been selected principal of Kane High School. The team finished third in the District IX Class A league behind Punxsutawney and Bradford. This group of veterans was a proud team. They were required to play im- portant contests with key personnel injured, but the substitutes and even the injured turned in fine performances. The Wolves traveled to Punxsutawney in mid-February to meet the Chucks in a do or die game. The Kane cagers were defeated 81-47 and hopes for Kaneis V winning the league were almost eliminated, but the Wolves continued to play fine ball. Bostjancic. 75 TRACK The 1965 edition of the Kane lVolves's track and Held team was a squad not equal to its powerful predecessors, but Head Coach Bruce Rice and his assistant, Cary Steele, were able to provide a team strong in the Held events, but lacking depth and maturity on the track. The Kane thinclads won two triangular meets at home, and lost one away. They also won a dual meet at home and lost one on the road. The Wolves were unable to capture the county crown, as they were bested by Bradford and Smeth- port. Again in the District IX competition the WVolves were unable to place higher than third. And Hnally Kane finished low in a Held of eleven schools in the Olean Relays. In previous track and Held campaigns over the last five years, the Ricemen dominated these latter three affairs. This year marked a decline in the Wolves's for- tunes, however, prospects look very bright for 1966.
