N HURRI-KAN Kane Area Union High School Kane, Pennsylvania I We, the Class of 1965, dedicate this annual to Mrs. Grace Johnston, Whose able assistance and support of school, as well as community projects, has earned for her our gratitude and respect. DEDICATION FOREWORD To the staff of the 1965 Hurri-Kane falls the task of compiling a history of the entire school year and putting it all in a single volume. The sophomores who came here in 1962, not fully realizing the importance of the coming years, are now graduating to face greater challengesg but they will always remember the part Kane High played in molding their futures. This is what life was like in Kane High during the school year of 1964-65. Adding to this the number who have graduated at james City, Ludlow and Mt. Iewett the number totals over 7000. All these schools have made significant contri- butions to this area in the past. They have also contributed to the state, the nation and the world. We are represented around the world from the Department of State, the armed forces, on college faculties, in all the professions-in all walks of life. Naturally, for those who have best succeeded, high school was but a stepping-stone. It was a vital one, however. Not only will Kane Area High School have an effect on what you will become but you will have an effect on the reputation and stature of the school. Be proud of your school, make your school proud of you. Dalton C. VanOrmer 4 Paul R. Miller PRINCIPAL The past year has been one of learning in Kane Senior High. Our school justifies its program and existence when students become self-motivated searchers for truth and knowledge begins to mature into wisdom. Education is very much in the spotlight and the reasons are perfectly clear. The role of education has assumed crucial significance because we have great faith in the power of education. Education can help all Americans to act more intelligently and better understand the problems of our country. To meet the space age and combat military aggression requires trained scientists and mathematicians. Our economy demands education for research, business and industrial administration. How much you have learned depends on how much you have wanted to learn. In reviewing the Hurri-Kane for 1964-1965 we hope you will recall the great challenges to improve yourself. Kane High School strives to effect these ends. ' .1 Gerald Perry - Secretary BOARD OF EDUCATION At least once a month this group of eleven men meets to determine the direction of education in the Kane Area. Extra evenings are given to committee meetings on education, buildings, athletics, and finances. All this time is given as a form of public service. Whenever the Kane Area Schools have attained heights of excellence, a great part of the credit goes to the Board of Education who, by furnishing the personnel and the materials of education, have made such things possible. First and foremost in America, the destiny of public education depends on the efforts of public-spirited citizens who struggle for continuous improvements in our schools in order that the students may meet the demands of our de- mocracy. Such is our School Board. Sitting, L. to R.: Robert Fees, Peter Chubon, Carold Oakes, Francis Causman, Dr. E. L. Hill, Elmer Larson, james Pear- Ralph De Camp, Fred Zampogna, Gerald Perry. During this time we have tried to add honor to our school and keep the banners of the Alma Mater flying high. Early in the year, we picked our class officers: Denny Secor, president, Dave Rakiecki, vice-presi- dentg Cindy Imbrogno, secretary, and Bob Lyon, treasurer. With our Iunior Class play and the Iunior-Senior Prom now in the past, we, the Class of '66, are looking forward to a prosperous, rewarding, and glorious year as Seniors. ', , it 4. Everything seemed strange and different to us. This feeling was eliminated, however, as we gradually became accustomed to the teachers, the upperclassmen, and to the school itself. As soon as we had adapted ourselves to the new surroundings, we vowed to make our sophomore year one of the most successful and rewarding of our high school lives. We enthusiastically supported Kane High's foot- ball and basketball teams, thus showing our school spirit. As the year progressed, most of us began to fully appreciate Kane High and to be proud of the fact that we are a part of it. In the years ahead, we shall strive to uphold the good name of our school and to carry on the work of the many great classes before us. Mary C. Not many students realize how much work goes into the making of Hurri-Kane each year. The staff begins its work the proceeding spring and does not complete it until a few short weeks before gradu- ation. Dummies, must be prepared, pictures taken, and copy written and edited to meet several deadlines during the course of the year. This year Miss Carla Hilty's staff has worked long and hard in the preparation of this annual look at high school life in Kane. In order to publish this yearbook, we've got to have sponsors. Judy and Karen compose couplets for each senior. Finishing the dummy copy. 53 What picture should We use here? It is composed of two representatives from each homeroom and a faculty advisor, Mrs. Heath. These representatives are divided into five standing committees: social, service, cafeteria, as- sembly, and publicity. The purpose of student council is to promote a better relationship between the students, the faculty, and the administration. It is always ready to help students with any problems of adjustment which they may have. 55 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY L to R R Gentilman I Cleland K Carlson K Schreiber S Peterson, J. Kulka, D. Carson. The National Honor Society is an organization made up of juniors and seniors who rank in the upper third of their classes and who exhibit out- standing qualities in the fields of Service, Leader- ship, Scholarship, and Character. Although the organization is thought by many to be for the benefit of only a few students, National Honor belongs to everyone. It is an organization which reflects the accomplishments of our entire school. Because the tapping ceremony was postponed until April, the new members could not be included in the picture. F.T.A. The Kane High School Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Loren Wright, can be quite proud of the account it gave of itself on the field and in the stands this year. Fresh from participation in Kane's Centennial Celebration, band members met the challenge of football season enthusiastically. At the season's mid- point, Mr. Wright was taken ill and Mr. Ronald Hill, assistant director, stepped in and did a fine job for the remainder of the season. VVhen the group moved indoors to begin rehearsals for its annual spring concert, it found Mr. Wright waiting and eager to get things underway. Yummy in the tummy. Was that a burp or a B flat? His group of hand-picked singers has once again spent a year of travel far and wide in the presen- tation of fine music. Although they were able to close out the season with a 6-3 won-lost record, the Wolves had tough going most of the Way, running into fired-up teams eager to atone for past losses. Getting off to a great start, Coach Bernie Mc- Quownis boys ran Wild in the opener, defeating Ridgway 41-14. In their third game of the year at Youngsville, Kane had to go all out to win 7-0. Then injuries hit and key injuries in the backfield caused serious gaps in Kane's offense. The Wolves lost three of their last four games, beating only Elk County Christian by a close 7-6 score. Coach McQuown has high hopes for next year's team even though thirteen boys will be lost due to graduation. Coach McQuown, by the way, has an admirable record of 20 Wins and only 4 losses since coming to Kane High three years ago. L. to R.: D. Zilcosky, R. Boyer, Head Coach B. McQuown, R. Vensel, M. BASKETBALL Although Coach Bruce Rice's Varsity Wolves had a frustrating season with sickness and injuries plaguing them this year, they were still able to tie for third place in league play. Competition was keen this year, many important games being decided in the last minute of play. Credit must be extended to the boys for team spirit and all-round hustle and determination. Since many games saw three or four juniors start- ing, next year holds much promise for Kane High basketball. Get that rebound! Tough Kane men fight back VARSITY Bottom Row, L. to R.: C. Benson, B.
