Faithfully recording in Words and pictures all the brightest moments of our school careers,-our friends, teachers, classes, clubs, plays, everything pertaining to our de- velopment through school-the I-Iurri-Kane is a thoughful reflection on things past. Members of the Hurri- Kane staff have an all-year job, often beginning during the summer vacation, when they start planning the yearbook, continuing all through the school term, and climaxed on that day when happy students re- ceive their annual, and all round the school is heard, Oh,1ook! Thereis . . It has become one of the state pioneers in puh- lishing a School Board Policy stating its duties to advance education. Among prospective changes is an expansion of the curriculum to include such things as spok- en foreign languages in seventh and eighth grades, language grammar beginning in ninth grade, and health in junior and senior high. Plans have also been made to give the sen- ior high students more room as Well as a new cafeteria, a health room, and a much-needed art department. All this and more will be made possible when studious little junior high pupils depart for their 31,500,000 school in September 1958. Our School Board in action. 10 Paul R. The seven old members chose the four leaf clover as their theme, with each leaf representing N.H.Sfs qualifications for admittance: scholarship, lead- ership, character, and service. Each candidate had to be in the upper third of his class and satisfy the other virtues. On February 28 the solemn tapping rewarded those who have in their high school years served their class and school. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY w I: L to R: P. Lican, M. Buchheit, V. Cartwright. These boys, under their adviser Mr. Vic Gentilman, strive 'to learn both how to follow orders and to give commands. The train- ing received in Military Leadership club is often valuable to the boys when they enter the armed services, as they also learn the manual of arms and how to lead a squadron. SM!! A-ma Nearly eighty sports-minded eighth and ninth grade boys met during the year for in- struction in shooting. The Small Arms Club, ad- vised and instructed by Mr. William Miller, was divided into eight firing groups of ten boys each. One group tired each Monday and Wednesday morning. Members received training in handling a twenty-two rifle, and practice in shooting from the four positions, prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. Nearly fifty eighth graders interested in the World of make-believe, the theater, met under the guidance of Mrs. Grace Cochrane, to learn the fundamentals of dramatics. This group elected Bob Carlson, President, Penny Miller, Vice Presidentg Janelle Carlson. Secretary, and Shirley Overbeck, Treasurer. Pro- grams, which consisted of skits, pantomimes and short plays, were planned by the program com- mittee, with each member appearing in at least one. Major project of the Jr. Dramatics year was the presentation of the one-act play 'cDon't Call Me Juniorv, hy Hugh Pm. Bennick, which was given for junior high assembly and for VVest Side and Central Schools. Every other Tuesday, under the able guid- ance of Mr. Barilar, about fifty-five talented freshmen met for 9th Crade Dramatics. The primary purpose of the club was to enable the participating students to learn to express their dramatic ability. Secondly, they were laying the foundation for future member- ship in Thespian Club. Early in the year, the club divided into groups to give short plays, one for each meeting. The remaining members, acting as an audience, criticized the productions, giving the good and bad points. All members appeared in plays dur- ing the year. The cheerleaders had a new looki' this year. For football season they donned new white golves, and beanies in Kane High's red and blue. Later, before the start of King Bas- ketball's reign, their traditional blue skirts were remodeled, and the girls emerged for basketball season sport- ing red skirts, white blouses, bow ties and beanies, an entirely different uni- form from last year's blue skirts and red sweaters. The cheerleaders worked long and hard for our school. They held pep assemblies, a parade and bonfire, sold tickets for the uptown Booster Club, and assisted in the Coronation Cere- monies of Homecoming Queen Becky Campbell, forming an archway of red and blue for the royal procession. An annual affair is the formal din- ner party always held during the Christmas season, chaperoned by the adviser Mrs. Turner and an invited guest of the faculty who has given extra time and help to the cheerlead- ing squad. wrdifg gadgefgaf fi L to R: jim Kibbie, D.
