6'1ke a showing The theme of this year's H6'ike was Faith, Hope, and Love, based on First Corinthians 13:13. So faith, hope, love abide, these three, but the greatest of these is love. In Hawaiian, this triumvi- rate of desirable qualities is Ekolu Mea Nui, and coincides with the Song Con- test theme of Hawaiian hymns. The ho'ike enacted a kahu's sermon as he offered three examples from Hawai- ian history to illustrate faith, hope, and love. The kahu, played by Shawn Peter- son, tells about Chiefess Kapi'olani's faith in defying Pele, Father Damien's gift of hope to the lepers of Kalaupapa, and Queen Lili'uokalani undying love for her people and her enemies at the time of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This page, top right jade Silva performs Mele Aloha O Lili'uokalani, a composition by Nu'ulani Atkins and Randie Fong which alludes to the 1893 overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani. Imprisoned at 'Iolani Palace, our last monarch found comfort in composing music that expressed her love for God and mankind. Bottom right: Kunane Burns dances Ke Ki'owai o Siloama, another Atkins-Fong mele, this composition makes reference to Siloama Church at Kalawao, Kalaupapa, where Father Da- mien brought hope and the work of God to Hawai- 'ian lepers. Opposite page: The Siloama ' dance line: Kawai Arakaki, Kanamu Akana Keli'i Bush, and Alden Levi.

Middle left: Pohai Leong led the sophomore co-ed for her second year in Hawaii Nani - Let us raise our voices in song, And pro- claim Hawai'i's beauty to the world. Pohai is the younger sister of Kalua Leong who directed the 1985 girls for three years and won the Louise Aoe McGregor Award for two years. Bottom left: Laura Yim led the senior co-ed in Nui Ke Aloha O Ke Alcua - God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Song That who so believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. This was her fourth year. Opposite page. Top: David Huihui directed the senior boys in Ala'e! Ala'e! Ke Hea Nei Ka l-laku E for his very first year. He was known for his vibrant marching, hand motions, and face expressions in his song leading. Left: Da- vid Lovell led the sophomore boys in Ala'e - Arise! Arise! and sing the blessed storyg Rejoice! Rejoice! the Lord jehovah reigns. Right: Thadd Ynigues conducted the freshman co-ed in He Ho'omail4a'i for his first year.
