volcrss AUWA A'A I'm so nervous to take my senior picture, I know it's gonna be ugly and l'll have to live with it for the rest of my life. I remember hating to take a nap after lunch, but now . . . Mr. Arakawa, he's really straight. When you go to see him you don't get candy or nothing. Did you sit on the senior bench yet? You're a senior, just go to the front of the line. Our class is like guinea pigs - they always try something new on us. She's never there when you need her. She should be a police officer. God, why do we have so many stairs? Why do we have to walk to 'Akahi? Why do we have to go to Group Guidance? I really don't like school, but don't get me wrong, I do want to graduate. I really feel the grade change this year. Maybe because this year it makes a difference. I can't think of seniors as 'SENIORS' They're just other students that I can look up to. Everyone has grown up so much. I think we know that we're gonna have to leave soon. It's not so bad coming back to school this year because I know the sooner I get back, the sooner I get out - and this time for goodI I like the way underclassmen walk around us. l'm not even gonna budge. And if I do, it may be a little into their way. The teachers are always saying, 'Your class is the worst yetl' Do they say that to every class or is that really true? Come with me to lunch. I don't wanna 'make A' walking into the new dining hall, big senior, and I don't even know where l'm going. l'm gonna look stupid! If you like somebody you no need be shame. Before got to, but now you one senior you no need be shame anymore. ackety ack .wp W fell? M95 55656 lx WM ff Nkflvqlgg QMOIW

Jeb if . wigs exixwmn N Nt Wx It .QQ-Qsgfd divx W, ,I XNNXX fe W ' NgM.gNQwSSNQ3Q N' K ex F N I. The last bell would ring, books would close and doors would shut. Every- thing would quiet down and settle in for a chilly evening. I often had that time alone to think about things. In fact, I can't remember ever having as many peaceful times as those. I really valued my moments alone. The campus was very different when it was deserted. I would take long walks and listen to the wind blow through the trees. All we seem to hear about is how we are Pauahiis dream, or that we are the chosen ones. Nature was innocent, it didn't disturb anyone or anything. Not a car was in view, not a person was in sight. Everything was tranquil, simple, and exquisite. I do not want to denounce Princess Pauahi, but I feel something ought to be said about Pauahis children. I noticed things that I never took time to really look at before: the orange huapala vine creeping down the rock wall of Auditorium Road, the hala grove leaning into the valley from the lookout near Smith. The parking lots that had been packed with unloading buses, and the hall- ways that had been filled with move- ment and chatter, now looked different When I think of how much this school has to offer, and I think of all the times I 've had to listen to other part-Ha waiians tell me they cou1dn't get in. It makes me wonder about this place. What will happen here? I asked myself. Will things improve? Will things decline? Will others hear the wind stirring the hala leaves? Or see nature so calm and simple? It hurt to think about such things. Then, I got brave and imagined Kamehameha twenty years into the future. It was frightening. Each time we sing the alma mater - All dangers defy ye . . . we re-new our spirit and strength. We remem- ber to stand tall, we feel the surge of pride and dignity that only we, the students of Kamehameha, can comprehend. Why then do we forget to pay proper respect to Pauahi on her day of thanks? Why do we abuse the dress code? Vandalize school property? Say Kam instead of Kamehameha? Why do we fail to strive I saw new and expanded buildings, more parking lots, networks of pave- ment. But I saw no trees and heard no calm winds. Nature was cemented over, shoved, like Kamehameha's enemies at Nu'uanu, into the obli- vion below. She wasn't given any more chances. A heart piercing thought cried within me. What was this that I was seeing? What was Kamehameha? I can not explain the loss I then felt. Maybe it is not meant to be explained. I didn't want to think anymore. No, I wanted to hear the winds blow through the trees again and bury with ironwood needles the future I had envisioned. E ka makani, please tell me that everything will be okay. Hide my tears. No, don't weep with meg you are strong, I whispered to the wind. No, I cried, don't go away. Please stay, Let your flowers growg they want to grow. Don't give up, I won't. Please don't fade away . . . we need you. Tell me you'll always stay and blow through the trees. Watch over the people, grow your flowers and shady trees. Don't let anyone take you away. Please.
