Even the Seniors knew we had a lot of spirit. lt was the best feeling knowing we had beaten them at something! l can remember Napp, Alapaki, Kunane, Joey. David, and Keoni doing their awesome cheers at the assemblies and wearing the creative attire of their football jersies and lava- lavas. Music and dance, our culture, our way of life In Western music, notes make songs. ln Hawaiian music, notes count, but lyrics are all-important. For our people, tune is secondary, meaning is crucial. This was a Hawaiian value, but we are losing sight of it. We should remember to read deep into the songs we write and sing: we must go beyond the music to value more than pretty tunes. The same is true with dance. Hula expresses the meaning of words. Hula is not just jumping around to the beat. This is another value we are losing sight of. We watch so much MTV that we forget: words and meaning are what make our music and dance so special. This is our culture, it was our way of life, we Ann Mane Wehllanl shouldn't be so quick to let it slip away. Mom Slmao
