lei no Pauahi ika ua Ka ua koko 'ula o na ali'i. He ali'i wale no ka 'ainag He kauwa wale ke kanakaf' Pauahi wears a lei of rain, The red rain of chiefs. Our land should be like a chief, And we its servants. Founder's Day has always been special to me. And each year it means more. Some students may look upon it as a chore, or they may go only because it is required. lt's sad to see that they ean't find in themselves and answer to the love Pauahi offers. -Karen Ka'upu Dancing at Founder's Day allows me to show my appreetiation for Pauahi. I was first asked to dance when I was in the fifth grade. I was seared at the thought of the upper-classmen watching me. Even now, I still get nervous before I go on, but I would never turn down a chance to dance for our Princess. She has given me so much and I'm glad I can give her something in return. -Shelli Aiona Far left: The combined student body of Kamehameha, K through 12, joins in singing He lnoa No Pauahif' They are conducted by senior Kahca Ka'iz1ma. Above: Scott Leong waits lor the right pitch before leading the high school division in Pauahi 'O KaIani. Left: Linda Makua performs a hula 'i1i'ili, pebble dance, as part of the Kekuhaupib celebration. 77

6 are all her children It's always the same around Founder's Day. Students think it a hassle to bring their whites to school. Some grumble about rehearsals. Why do we have to go to practice? We sing the same songs every year. Even teachers get upset about the class time lost to rehearsals. I guess they don't feel it's worth it. But I know it is. In fact, a week and a half of rehearsals . and one hour in Keku seem a very small price to pay for all that Pauahi has given us. -Shawn Peterson Mom always tells me not to always takeg that to give is important, too. lim glad I was chosen to lead the Intermediate Unit in Psalm 24. lt was my chance to give to Pauahi some- thing of all that she has given me. -Kirk Kanetake Top: Liz Madrona and Penny Yama- shita complete one of Hve lehua leis offered by their hula club as decora- tions for Pauahi's crypt. Middle: Carol Lewis explains the ceremony to her wide-eyed students as Jade Silva offers the welcoming chant. Right: Franklin Hopkins keeps vigil over Pauahi's portrait at the entrance to Keku. Far right: The Reverend David Ka 'upu, Kahu of the Schools, leads the memorial service under the tent at Mauna 'Ala To his left is Keiki Kahu U'i Kalalau who later offered the devotional He Aloha ia Pauahi. 78
