Princess Bernice Pa uahi Bishop EE OF OUR HEART Each of the past thirteen years of my life has been marked by a day of remem- brance for Pauahi. I remember when I was a child. My life was much simpler then. My teachers tried to teach me. More often than not, I played instead. But even then, I could feel a powerful current run through me. Founder's Day was the Princess' Day, a day to honor that beautiful lady who had given me this school. I was sufficiently awed by the entire celebration and filled with a bit of pride in my young knowing that I had, in a special way, been blessed by Pauahi. I remember when I was in Intermediate School. I finally had a chance to contribute my own gift to the Founder's Day celebration. I practiced and practiced all those afternoons just to be able to sing with the high school people. But my truest and proudest moment came when I recited the Psalm. It was my gift to Pauahi. I could see all that had been given to me by the woman I had come to call Princess. I was grateful. Now there must be time to look ahead. Everything she has given me will only be worth something if I put it into my future. Only now, half-way through my thirteenth year at Kamehameha, do I truly realize why we have a Founder's Day. I saw the kindergarteners and I couldnlt help but give them a silent message: You and all of us are Pauahi's children. Because of her foresight, our opportunities have been and will be greater than what they might have been without her vision. And in my heart I felt the swelling of what I can only call love for this woman. Aloha, Pauahi. Queen of our hearts. Yours is a gift I can only hope to repay. -Laura Yim Right: Members of the Kamehameha family and the greater Hawaiian commu- nity gather at Mauna 'Ala, the Royal Mausoleum, for services commemorating the December 19th birthday of our founder FOUNDER'S DAY By: Momi Lau, Trish Hara, and Sheri Yamauchi Photographed by Brian Ng and Kihei de Silva
