WY +1 '2ff .hmm the distinguished 190 members of the warrior band and colorguard displayed precision and discipline as they continued to represent kamehameha well in all of their functions throughout the year. under the skillful and highly-qualiHed direction of john riggle and aristotle santa cruz, the widely-recognized unit achieved their goal of being the only band in the state to make a clean sweep of all the major awards at every contest they were involved in. gustavus supe, in his Hrst year as drum major, and noelani loo, the groups president, led the band through all of their endeavors. the bandis year began way back in august and continued through the first part of june. during the year they participated in the sixth annual kamehameha tournament of bands, the kahuku band tourna- ment, the millilani festival of bands, the meadow gold festival of bands, the pro bowl pre-game and halftime festivities, the world of pageantry hawaii invitational Held, concert, and parade competi- tions, and the kamehameha day parade. it was at these performances that the band established itself as one of hawaii 's best. this past summer, the band embarked on a three week tour of the continental united states, with stops in portland, new york, washing- ton d.c., los angeles, and san diego. the highlight of the trip was when the band out-performed ten other national bands to capture the portland rose festival Held competition grand sweepstakes trophy, as well as the best out-of-state band award at the portland rose festival grand floral parade the following day. because of their achievement, the band was ranked as one of the top ten bands in the nation, and were asked to return to defend their title in the competition this summer. another treat for the band came when williard scott, the n.b.c. weatherman, wore their t-shirt and baseball cap on the taping of the today show. throughout the years, the band has been an innovator in marching and musical fields. their continued success has carried on during this past year. as the members of the band would sa y, band no ka oi, hey, hey!
