hui lama the environmental task force of past years had a new name and new faces, the club name hui lama, was taken from the hawaiian endemic lama tree, under energetic advisors chuck burrows, mandy bowers, sig- rid southworth, and gerald Johnson, the club was rare- ly inactive, hiking trails all over the island, they ob- served and learned about hawai ' i ' s many plants, ani- mals, and geography, members took the challenge of trekking makapu ' u ridge, waiahole loop trail, malae- kahana and kapalama heights, at almost every u.h. football game and at the hula bowl, members ran a concession stand to raise funds for an outer island trip, club meetings and hikes were often accompanied by guest speakers and experts in ecology and geography, there were also several weekend camps concentrating on scientific and historical studies, the kawainui swamp field study in november was one of the most intense and exciting camps, as they analyzed water samples and studied archaeology, geology, and the various inhabitants of the swamp, the club also helped others to gain the pleasure of hawai ' i ' s natural beauty by learning trail maintenance to improve the kapa- lama ridge trail behind the school in a trailathon. i k above: 1) tammy apana, sigrid southworth (advisor), ray osakoda (president).
