Collins, President The Hawaiian word Imua, translated into English as forward. expresses the universal urge for achievement. In the mid-western United States they refer to it as get up and get. In New England they call it gumption. Longfellow described it beautifully in his poem, Excelsior. about the youth who bore a banner with a strange device. There are many other ways in which to define or symbolize that infinite quality of human nature we call ambition. By maintaining a wholesome and studious atmosphere here at Ka- mehameha we strive to kindle the fires of worthy ambition in all youth who enter our doors. There is much room at the top of the ladder in after life for those who have the brains and perserverance to follow step by step the plotted course of their careers. This is particularly true today in fields of Science and Engineering. As another school year comes to a close, the Trustees hope that each member of the class of 1956 has found in these Schools the inspiration and driving force that will carry onward to ultimate success. Mr. Frank E. Midkiff, Vice-President Mr. Edwin P. Murray, Treasurer Judge Willson C. Moore, Secretary George M. Collins President Board of Trustees Bernice P. Bishop Estate Mr. Atherton Richards l aS ilTlT {TITjaTi Mr. Harold W. Kent, President, The Kamehameha Schools Dear Graduates of the Class of 1956: Aloha ! When you receive this anmial, you will be in the midst of preparation for com- mencement. This is a time of mixed emotions for you. There is an element of sad- ness because you are concluding your life here at Kamehameha. But there is joy too in the anticipation and promise which the future holds for you. You are happy to face the realities of the world beyond your home here at Kamehameha. We have tried to prepare you to face those realities, to meet people and situations with a good attitude. It is your attitude which will largely determine how well you succeed in meeting the problems of life. Some of your training may not have impressed you as being necessary or valu- able, and some of your tasks may have seemed tedious, but you will find that this part of your training and discipline will be sources of strength for you when you study a problem and try to solve it. I have much confidence and trust in each of you. And with this message, I send my best wishes to all of you. May the blessings of God go with you always. Owau iho no me ka aloha. Harold W. ( Mel Wildei, to Thomasine Wilson Student Bodv President Life is not measured by its duration hut by its donation. A full life can be attained by striving to improve our stand- ards of living. This is partially accomplished by the Kameha- meha Schools Student Councils. The student government helps us to understand the necessity for law and order. This awareness is a valuable asset to our fulfillment of life, because we shall need it later when we will be making social contribu- tions in the communities where we establish our homes. Leadership begins early, and the system used at both schools is designed to get into office the persons best suited for the job. Choral Cadets, and Glee Clubs have provided a pleasant background of music for many school functions during the year. In addition to contributing to the success of this year ' s musical programs, these groups have performed on the neighbor islands, rendering both Hawaiian and international favorites to appreciative audiences. Music, a vital part of our schools ' activ- ities, begins at the Preparatory Depart- ment, where under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Gillett and Mr. Harold B. Turney, the prepsters spend many hours learning and practicing their songs. The fruits of their labor are realized during the Christmas and Spring Music Festivals when they take an active part in making these great song festivals the success they are. military ■r r- ' ■i ! ' 4 Major Caleb Cole To the Class of 1956 May I add the congratulations of the ROTC De- |)artment to those of the many other faculty mem- bers and friends of the Class of ' 56 for a job well done. You, as a class, have had more changes in your military life here at Kamehameha thrust upon you than any other recent class. For no two consecu- tive years have you been able to follow a pattern set in previous years. Your ability to adjust quickly and successfully has been well demon- strated by the manner in which you have so ably directed and guided the cadet battalion through this year ' s expanded and difficult program. I hope sincerely that we in the ROTC Department have been instrumental in some small degree in molding you into better citizens and leaders of your Terri- tory and your proud race. It is with deep regret that I personally say fare- well to you and Kamehameha. My three years here with you will always remain in my memory as one of the most interesting and pleasant tours of my Army career. May I, in turn, have repaid you and Kamehameha in some small way for your truly fine spirit of aloha. Caleb A. Cole Major, Infantry PMS T Captain Arthur Jackson M Sgt. Horace Smith M Sgt. Upon the s houlders of Major Caleb A. Cole, P.M.S. Marching in parades and functioning at assem- blies and special events, the cadets have shown a high degree of military snap and precision. The task of filling the gaps left open by last year ' s gradu- ating seniors and producing a squad that would be potent and lethal, whenever they played, fell on the shoulders of Coach Tom Mountain and his assistant, Fredrick Meyer. Scho- Ka We, the mighty class of 1956, add another chapter to the life of the Kameha- meha Schools. With a start of twent) ' -six youngsters in the kindergarten at the Preparatory and an increase in the fall of 1950 during our seventh grade year, this class grew tremendously in size as the years progressed. These stalwart Kameha- mehans comprised part of the population of all the islands. We have learned, experienced, shared, and witnessed colorful, eventful, and fruitful years. We senior girls will never forget the Fashion Show we presented in our sopho- more year, our lovely Hawaiian Health Day Program during that same year, the eighth grade plays we participated in — remember Getting Gracie Graduated? — and the training we all e.xperiened as Mama-Dees of Senior Cottage. We boys will never forget the guidance we green-horns in the seventh grade received, the task of being on the Dining Hall work list as waiters, the instructions we absorbed in the various Vocational Shops while undergoing our orientation periods, and finally the leadership developed through military life, clubs, and str- dent body duties. Annual Song Contests, some of which were victories, our fun in the surf and ■KALOI. FREDER Kaunakakai Honorable Men Shop 9; Agncult sity Football I 1, Shop 7, 8; Var- SHICAKI. LAWRENCE A. Honolulu. We will never forget the many instructors who have crossed our paths while we made our separate ways up the long trail past years . . . the friends who have en- tered our lives . . . the loved ones who have been part of our daily living. The football squad and other athletic teams claimed many of their members from our class. The main phase of communication for the Schools, the publication of Ka Moi, was the faithful work of many of us. Scholastically and socially we enjoyed being a ])art of this interesting Kameha- meha family. Many of the things we have learned will help us to be worthwhile members of society. To higher fields of learning, to the business world, to the military branches of the country we will climb. There is no reason why we should falter. There is every reason why we should rise upward and be successful. We have been trained. It is up to us to make good — to make history of which our alma mater, our parents, our community, our race, and our world will be proud ! s TSTrjJOTil AH MAI.
