I KAUDASCOPE 301 North 3rd St. Box 269 Kalida, Ohio 45853 $15.00 The key to success at KHS is the cooperation of everyone. Without cooperation we would not be able to unlock the doors to the success we have found this year. From basketball to band to clubs — teamwork has played an important role. Without the faculty and students working together, the doors that lead to success cannot be opened. Each person has their own key but in order to unlock the doors we must all do our own part. One person cannot unlock the doors to success alone, it takes the achievements of everyone. When they get up in the morning, they get ready to go to school just like everybody else does. In class, the seniors must concentrate, pay attention, and study hard. These students know they will soon be on their own, so they try to ask questions about things used most in later life. However, a senior’s busy schedule does not end at 3 o’clock. After the school day, these students are involved in a number of activities ranging from band and musical to academics and sports. But wait! Instead of extra-cur-riculars, some seniors head for their jobs or other responsibilities. After all of this is over, the seniors go home to do homework or even better, to relax! 15 IN MEMORY OF Gina M. Ellerbrock “SHE IS JUST AWAY’ I cannot say — and I will not say that she is dead. She is just away With a cheery smile, and a wave of a hand. She has wondered into an unknown land and left us dreaming how very fair it needs must be. Since she lingers there; So think of her fairing on, as dear In the love of there as the love of here, Think of her still as the same, I say. She is not dead, she is just away. — author unknown Seniors • Seniors • Seniors • Seniors Michele J. Averesch Marci A. Bendele Terri Bendele William J. Blanford Sharolyn K. Borgelt Dorraine G. To 45 — 3. “For kids, by kids,” replied Mr. Gerdeman, the advisor for the TLC Club (Teens Listening with Care and Concern), when he was asked the club’s purpose. The Central Committee, made up of Linda Phillips, Janice Karhoff, and Joyce Hovest, wrote a newsletter and TEB (Teddy Bear) centered toward jr. high kids. “We’re concerned about the Jr. high kids and the questions they have about high school,” said Linda as she wants to help them get ready for the pressures of high school. Laurie Wurth and Linda were the judges of the “Just Say NO” poster contest. Participants were from grades two through seven. Kim Woodyard received an honorable mention in the statewide contest and Dawn Winkle won and met the governor. Who can make the best non-alcoholic drink? The club wanted to show people they can have fun without alcohol. On Wednesday, December 23, drinks made by the members of the TLC were judged by Mrs. Rieman and Mr. Heitmeyer. Before the at-large election was held, the Student Council Constitution was changed. Membership changed from 12 to 14 members, and there will be six members from the at-large vote instead of four. Raising and taking down the flag, changing the indoor and outdoor signs, selling candy and taking in admission at junior high and freshman basketball and volleyball games, and sponsoring field day were the activities completed by the Stu- dent Council members. Along with the Foreign Language Club, they sponsored the first Sadie Hawkins Dance ever held at KHS. They worked with the administration to establish policies concerning the wearing of shorts and seniors getting out early. The traditional homecoming game and dance was also organized by the Student Council. Because of a conflict, the homecoming game was held January 23 and the dance was held February 20. They played against all the Putnam County teams, then entered various tournaments around the area. The club tries to promote academics to the fullest for those students who wish to excel in this area. The club prepares itself for meets and tournaments by: (1) playing trivial pursuit, (2) playing jeopardy, and (3) going over old questions that have been asked before. Even though this year wasn’t as successful as we all hoped it would be, (record — 10 wins, 10 losses, and 1 tie), they will be back next year ready to go. CLUBS Academic, FHA Members of FHA sold 80 boxes of candy for their fund raiser to take a trip to Children’s Hospital in April. In October, they dressed up in scary Halloween costumes to collect money for UNICEF. FHA went to Brookhill in December to sing Christmas songs to the children and then Santa Claus (played by Lori Warnecke) came and gave candy to the kids. During the basketball season, they sold cake raffle tickets for each home game. Election of officers came in April and they had their Parent-Daughter Banquet on May 5. The Foreign Language Club started this year with a fund raiser. They had six days to sell candles and knick-knacks. The top selling team who sold the most had a “Pizza Pig Out” at Garrivicks sponsored by the company. Pigging out were Shelly L. Miller (top seller of 31 items), Amy Vorst, Annette Trenkamp, Sandy Miller, and Deb Fortman. On April 6, the senior and Spanish II members took a field trip to Toledo University to watch a Don Quixote and Spanish Folk Dance; then they went out to lunch at Chi-Chi’s. The National Honor Society is made up of selected students who meet the standards of scholarship, service, character, and leadership. For their fund raiser, they sold game ball raffle tickets at all the home basketball games. Their activities included: (1) a field trip to Port Side, Toledo, where they saw South Pacific, (2) a parents’ banquet, and (3) a $200 scholarship to a senior. K. Meyer, S. I. Trenkamp, Kerner, A. The band is lined up and ready to perform the opening song, “I Can’t Stop Loving You” at Chaminade on Oct. 27, 1987. GO FOR IT! During the season the goal of the band was to accomplish a I (superior) rating in order to advance to state. There were a lot of responsibilities and work to be done in the weeks ahead if they wanted to receive a superior rating. The upper classmen worked extra hard in the last sectionals before state. “Senior leadership played a big role the whole year, especially as state approached,” commented Linda Phillips, field commander. The competition was held on November 7, 1987, at 5 p.m. at Ohio State University Stadium. That day wasn’t like any other cold November day. Instead, it was raining as they say, “CATS AND DOGS.” The rain created a problem and made the band tense. “I was upset with the rain and I think it broke some people’s concentration,” replied Michele Averesch, a senior trumpet player. Even though it rained, the band marched on and showed their great pride. Many goals that each individual had set during the season were a big part of the success at state. “The fact that we were one out of the sixteen bands of Class C in Ohio makes it a great satisfaction,” commented Mr. Myers after being asked what his feelings were about performing at state. At the competition the hand received a II (excellent) rating. The color guard and field commander both received a I (superior) rating. To Be Early Is To Be On Time. This was achieved with new outfits made by Kim Fortman. The music boosters and chorale members helped fund the new look. Frosty Follies and Surfin’ USA were this year’s themes for the chorale and mixed chorus concerts. Highlights from the concerts included a vaudeville show starring Santa Claus and friends, a rock-n-roll Frosty and a tap dancing Rudolph, and a beach party featuring rock-n-roll music f.om the early 60’s. Fund raisers the band and chorus participated in were the cheese and sausage sale, the election dinner, and the Easter bake sale and raffle ticket sale. STUDENT LITE It's Girls’ Turn To Take Out Guys! Gonna Have A Good Time; A Good Time Jamboree! Bales of straw in the gym? That is what was found on November 21, 1987 when the Student Council and Foreign Language Club put on the first Sadie Hawkins Dance. As students walked in the gym, they were dressed in flannel shirts and jeans, and they voted on one senior girl and guy to reign as king and queen. Approximately half way through the dance the first pumpkin king and queen were announced as Dave Hovest and Marci Bendele. They were crowned with straw hats and Marci was given a bouquet of daisies. Responses about the dance were positive. “My boyfriend and I had a great time. We really enjoyed ourselves. I would recommend this affair for future years,” replied senior Lori Warnecke. “It was a lot of fun with all the music and the variety of music they played,” said freshriian Cheryl Bendele. Refreshments were served, music was provided by Fox Sound Systems from 8-11 p.m., and admission was $2 per person. Pumpkin king Dave Hovest and queen Marci Bendele. Watch it! That hurts! That needle is huge! Those are the words of many students at the Senior Class Bloodmobile. With a blood shortage because of the threat of AIDS, the senior class arranged to have a bloodmobile on December 4,1987. Senior committees were decided upon to set up the gym, take temperatures, and serve refreshments, etc. Even though some students’ arms ached and they felt dizzy, they thought it was fun working at all the stations. “It didn’t hurt or anything, but the thing I didn’t like was when I almost passed out after giving blood,” said Sharolyn Borgelt after almost passing out twice after giving blood. “A lot of students were involved either as a donor or a volunteer and at least half of the donors were students,” said senior class president, Kelly Meyer. A special thanks to seniors Brian Wurth, Greg Landwehr, and Dennis Schulte for taking the 63 units collected to Toledo after the bloodmobile was over. On February 20, the annual homecoming dance was sponsored by the student council. “It was really nice and I had a good time. The music was great and I think that everyone enjoyed themselves,” said junior Cheryl Hoffman. “It was pretty much fun and I had a ball,” replied senior Ronda Nartker. The following are excerpts from speeches given during the commencement. Honor student Sharolyn Bor-gelt said it best about the class of 1988, “the class would not be the same without even just one of these personalities. If you took one away it would be like a puzzle with a missing piece.” “And now it is time for all of us to go down our own pathways of success to fulfill our dreams and find the answers. However, as we start our new lives that are set before us, we must realize it will not always be easy,” stated Kelly Meyer, senior class president. Valedictorian, Linda Phillips, declared, “It is fortunate for us that we have such fond memories, for as we so carefully donned our caps and gowns today, we realized that we can never go back and relive those events which occurred during our years here at Ksilida High School.” Other Strong • 1 Dawn and Amy, one step closer to graduation. This year’s captain, Keith Nartker, broke the school’s record twice by shooting the lowest score on 9 and 18 holes. The guys had a lot of mixed feelings about what was going to happen at state. Some were thinking about how great it was to be the first golf team to go to state. “Everything was going through my mind, the pep-rally and how wonderful it was that students supported us,” said Dennis Karcher. At State, Keith Nartker said, “I was never so nervous in my life.” Dennis Karcher said, “I wanted to shoot a good score and help the team.” Most of the team members felt pleased as they received 3rd place at state finals. Jenny Warnecke and Brent Langhals were the most compatible; therefore, they reigned as the king and queen of the “computer court.” Cheerleaders also sold team and individual pins of the basketball players as another fundraiser to make enough money to get new pom-pom’s. The cheerleaders have cheered a record of 34 games, which included cheering at girls’ tournament games. I Freshmen cheerleaders. Front row: Erin Strauer, Becky Bockrath. Back row I.isa Oglesbee, Stephanie Williams, Michelle Meyers. 84 SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT Cheerleaders proving that even the little people count Varsity cheerleaders. Front row: Amy Vorst, Sherri Schulte. Back row: Linda Phillips, Deb Buss, Marci Bendele. rmmm . m • EFFORTS AWARDED This year’s athletes really showed their talents as the volleyball team did very well and our golf team placed 3rd at state. Going to state must have rubbed off on our basketball teams as the boys were state runner-up and the girls were state champs. Then spring rolled around and the baseball team worked to their ability. These teams were honored at athletic banquets throughout the year starting with volleyball and golf on November 22, basketball on April 18, and baseball on May 20.
