At a time when there is much unrest around the world and especially in our own nation, your decisions should greatly influence future directions of society. Go forth and be heard. Take your place in society with confidence and understanding. You have the opportunity of a lifetime to give direction to a fast changing society. We have faith in your ability to get the job done. Good Luck! Principal MR. JOHN PHILLIPS Master of Education Bowling Green State University MR. THOMAS KURRY Master of Education Xavier University As you take your places in our changing society be aware of our nation's two great needs. The need for responsible citizens and the need for leadership. In reality responsible leadership is one of the primary aims of the educational process. — 5 Faculty The mathematics department of Kalida High School has played a big part in the developement of our students for continued learning. Together with the science department our students have become fully aware of the concepts of mathematics and science. With these concepts in mind we hope to set forth many men and women into the fields of scientific and mathematical studies. The English Department has made great strides forward. The students are not learning the fundamentals MR. NICHOLAS LAMMERS; B.A. MR. DONALD HOFFMAN; B.A. of English; such as grammar and spelling but the students are now delving into the basis of our language. Literature is also being introduced as a necessary part of our English program. The Social Studies department of Kalida High School is serving the students well. It is enabling them to become familiar with the current problems of today, and to relate these problems to past occurences. We aim to prepare our students to enter into our society as competent and well-informed citizens, so they may take their place in our world of change. Foreign language is an essential part of every school curriculum. Because of the rapid changes in transportation and communication, students of today must have MISS MARY C. HECKMAN; B.A. the ability to converse in a foreign tongue. Mastering this skill will help our students in their future guest as successful citizens. Throughout the years vocational training has played a large part in preparing students for a career in business, agriculture, mechanics, and in the home. With the aid of typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping, many prepare themselves for future occupations. Boys especially have opportunities in industrcial arts and in agricultural courses. Girls MR. THOMAS GETTMAN; B.A. MR. LEO SCHROEDER B.S. MISS MARIAN GRAHAM B.A. too learn to apply their knowledge acquired in home economics to everyday living. For them learning is manual as well as factual. Another field that has become more important in recent years is fine arts. Through music and art students learn to appreciate many of the finer cultural aspects of society and adapt themselves for better living. MRS. EVANGELINE POTTS B.A., B.S.E. MR. They are a combination of various qualities. They must show enthusiam, school spirit, leadership, scholarship and the energy of service that is necessary for a Senior. The Class of 1969 has these qualities . Throughout the four years the Seniors have worked, learned, laughed, and served their school well. The impression that they left upon Kalida High School is one that will not be soon forgotten. Sue Nartker-Reporter, Bertha Cleemput-Sec., Dan Heitmeyer Pres., Steve Moening-S.C. Rep., Mark Warnecke-Tres., Mike Sarka-Vice Pres. The past twelve years of our lives have been years of determination, years of joy and years of dreams. When we were in the lower grades our minds were like dark clouds floating in the sky. Today those same clouds, by becoming clearer and brighter, have cleared up our minds. The dreams that drifted away have returned to us to take a definite shape and become a reality. However, today we still have dreams that float away, but someday they'll return. The voices that we have been hearing in class are the voices of tomorrow. Most of these voices will be heard in many different colleges. Other voices will be heard on regular jobs, and voices will be heard in the armed services in our country. These voices will not die in the hearts of man. 17 JUDY BIRKEMEIER MARGIE BOCKRATH KEN BURGEI 18 MARGIE CLEMENTZ ELIZABETH ERHART RUTH ERHART SHARON ERHART CHRIS FORTMAN MARK FORTMAN Motto We go forward to serve. Poor Henry was ordered from Aunt Ethel's (Karen 0.) boarding house, lost his job and was thrown over board by his girl friend Gladys(Joyce U. ). A pathetic looking man, Mr. Bumptis (Randy U.), took Henry's last cent to have his friend Ernest put him out of his misery. When Henry returns home, he finds everyone has forgiven him and he has his job back. Everything is fine until Henry remembers his payment to Mr. Bumpus. Now, it seems, everyone has the name Ernest or is connected with death. Pumpkin (Wannitta V.) and Jill(Becky W.), two peppy fourteen-year-olds, love murder stories, and the two old maids Clarrissa(Norma B.) and Ernestine(Marilyn V.) enjoy reading and writing murder mysteries. Margie's (Bertha C.) boy friend is named Ernie (Bob s.), and Aunt Ethel's gentleman friend is C.E.Grimn(Ken H.), maker of the famous Grimn Reaper. Henry's peculiar actions call for attention from a doctor and sure enough, his name is Dr. Ernest (JerryH.) Aunt Stella(Sarah U.) is of no help with her spite for Henry and Sleepy(Elton S.), Mr. Bumpus' friend is believed to be the real Ernest. To be'deadly earnest' it's great . 34 35 Things were quite odd around the old Hatcher house, in fact, in all of Green Falls. When Ivy (Sharon E.) and David Hatcher (RandyU.) inherited the 100 year old mansion, they expected to see it in ruins. Instead, it was kept up very neat, by Jim Roddy (Jerry H.) the caretaker. When they thought they were the only people living in the house they were quite mistaken. It was also occupied by five old ghosts-Celestine Hatcher (Mary Ellen P.), Millicent (Norma B.), Penelope (Karen 0.), Oscar Odell (Ken H.), and Jonathan Cantwell (Tom K.). The only person who could see these ghosts was Joy Van Satterlee (Ruth E.). Many people such as Sam Bishop (Elton S.) a gambler, Elsie Jones (Sarah U.) who's problem was stealing and Alice Jackson (Nancy K.) who's problem was her husband came to talk to Miss Celestine. The ghosts were accepted by everyone except David and Mayor Arnold Teague (Dan H.). They decided to have the psychiatrist (Dr. Hamel-gard Bartholomew, (Bob S.) come and talk to Joy about the ghosts. This idea didn't work so they decided to have a witch, Sarah Custard (Marilyn V.) scare away the ghosts, and it was a success. Before the ghosts left, in came a distinguished looking man, Ben Landers (Bob S.) whom Celestine had been waiting for, for years. The above have all helped our relationships in some way. The cheerleading clinic was set up to give all girls a chance to learn the basics of cheerleading. By serving refreshments at ballgames we are able to show our attitude toward cooperation. Intramurals gives everyone a chance to show his or her sportmanship and conduct. By attending the dances one shows his school spirit and also how he or she can get along with others. 49 ROW ONE: M. Kahle, N. Buss, R. Erhart- Vice-Pres., ROW TWO: M.E. Potts-Pres., B. Fuerst, S. We've held several assemblies in which we tried to involve, inform and inspire interest in our fellow students. Honor Society Induction was held on February 12. With these new members, we hope to continue our activities. We also hosted the County Honor Society Banquet this spring. In all our activities, we try to exemplify the qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, and service. These are our ideals. 50 siuvudouj fi tuassy F.F.A. OFFICERS: N. Schulte-S. Advisor; D. This year we have a total of 38 members. I am sure that all the members are gaining knowledge through this club. The F.F.A. has money making events during the year. The turkey raffle has been successful for two years now. The raffle brings in most of the money. We also have a chicken and spagehetti dinner. With the money we make from these events we purchase things we may need. Mostly the money is needed to pay for the F.F.A. Conventions that we attend each year. With the club getting larger we need more money making events to pay for the trip. Over all the club is very successful. All the members are proud of the F.F.A. 52 DEC A Our first activity was a Candy Drive in which we enthusiastically promoted our DECA chapter. With a portion of profit from this money making proposition, we created a Christmas window display in a vacant building on Main Street, plus posters that we made from time to time. In the spring a group of us business minded students set out on a fieldtrip. Here everyone put all of his business knowledge to work in observation. All of our activities and our classroom instruction has helped to enable us to develope a keen awareness of the business world.. We all hope to somehow contribute and build this nation with what knowledge we have acquired. The purpose of DECA is to develope a business attitude towards his job and customers and to develope the basic knowledge of selling. ROW ONE: S.Moening, R. Vorst, B. Schmersal, E. Erhart, R. They often marched in 90-degree heat or in the rain, but the satisfaction from having worked hard alleviated any temporary physical discomfort. The band marched in parades in Ottawa, Norwalk, Ottoville, Findlay, and Delphos. It also led the Kalida Pioneer Days' Parade. But all was not work for the band. The band members held a picnic at the Ottawa swimming pool. It also spent a day enjoying the rides and amusements at Cedar Point. A high point of the year's activity was the band’s participation in the welcoming of Vice-President Hubert Humphrey to Toledo Express Airport. In his speech, Mr. Humphrey specifically thanked the Kalida band for helping to make his visit a success. He later said that his enthusiastic reception at Toledo was the most inspiring point of his campaign. The band also took part in the district band contest at Bluffton College. 62 Concert Band ROW ONE: M.Siefker, K. Osterhage, A. Wurth, A. Fortman, S. Phillips, M.B. Krouse, A. Remlinger, M.E.
