PRESIDENT S ADDRESS Harold Beldo Parents teachers and frxends As presxdent of the graduatmg Class of 1948 xt 15 wxth great pleasure I welcome you to our exercxses this evemng We hope you will enjoy the speeches gxven thxs evemng and bear w1th us the mxstakes we may make As Semors we are launchlng out into a world that as yet hasn t fully recovered from the favzshes of the past war, and we may be facmng a world on the bunk of xnflatlon Our natlonal defense does advocate the development of natural resources whlch w1ll make the United States self suffxcxent xn major materxals as World War II forced us to develop the synthetlc rubber lndustry now he states we should take steps to relxeve ourselves of lmportmg petroleurn from far away areas Thxs would be a very unportant step We are also facing a disaster that has befallen our foreign countrles several of whxch are belng threatened by the Commumstxc government Some already have lost thexr freedom under thxs ruling We hope and pray that such a catastrophe wlll never reach 1nto our own Umted States where we are free to speak without fear and to worshxp God nn our own way that we are free to oppose what we think wrong and stand up for what is rlght We truly are grateful to our parents and teachers and we are proud to be cxtlzens of thxs free Amerxca of ours I thank you ' - ' . , 0 . .
