Yet, we do not entirely leave the past. Yesterday is a part of today and will be a part of tomorrow. We, the staff of the 1954 Boiling Pot, have tried to record some of the things which have taken place dur- ing the changing seasons, some of the events of your life at Kalamazoo College. We leave to you the task of associating these events with your own experiences. 7 AUAIIEMIC activities form the basis of our life at Kalamazoo Col- lege. Here, within a small compass of space, one comes into contact with the great ideas of the ages: gains insight into the workings of the universe. At a small liberal arts college these ideas can be freely and rnaturely formulated in an atmosphere of inforrnality and friendship. Excellence in the academic part of our college life is our heritage from past generations. 8 RELIGIII life at Kalamazoo College centers around the bi-weekly services at Stetson Chapel, Where we hear speakers of all nationalities and faiths. Supplementing the chapel services are an annual religious emphasis Week and various student church groups. Here in our fellowship in learning each student may form and evaluate his personal philosophy through discussion with faculty and other students. 9 Vlltll METAL O influences serve to enrich our life at Kalamazoo. Not only do We have pleasant surroundings in which to carry on our academic endeavors, but also a variety of locations Where We may participate in outdoor activ- ities: skating and tobogqaninq at Echo Valley, picnic- ing at Gull Lake or Milham Park, swimming at many of the lakes. We also may enjoy the Kalamazoo Sym- phony, the Civic Theater, the Community Concert series. All these combine to give us a multiplicity of activities. 'IO 1 'l activities at Kalamazoo College are many and variecl, ranqinq from a Tuesday afternoon coffee hour to a formal dinner-dance. Campus organizations and the four classes sponsor various social affairs throughout the year. The six societies contribute considerably to the social atmosphere. 'Il Weimer K. The factors ot ineligibility. the draft and inexperience hurt the gridders consistently and the net result was a 1-7 season record: New head coach Rolla Anderson and assistant Ioe Bogart installed the single wing for the first time in many years at Kalamazoo. The Hornets outgained the opponents in total yardage but were stymied inside the ten-yard line many times when victory seemed imminent. In the first game of the year against perennially strong Wheaton College, the skies loosed a torrent of rain and the contest became a mud bath for the players. Ka1amazoo's inexperience showed greatly as contrasted with Wheaton's powerhouse, and the Hornets dropped their worst defeat of the season. 33-0. Everyone did their best for the benefit of the local crowd and won 34-6. The first conference tilt. at Albion, was one of those where the team with the breaks wins. The Britons got the breaks and the game 39-13. At half-time, Al Patzer received his draft notice and was lost for the rest of the season. His loss was greatly felt throughout the remainder of the schedule. Then came the heartbreakers, Adrian won their homecoming contest with the Hornets as the opposition, 21-19. in a battle where the Homets were stopped on the 2 yard line in the last half minute of play after marching the length of the field. Alma came to town for the Kalamazoo Home- coming Football Game and held the Hornets in check to post a 13-0 decision. Olivet, one of the weakest in the M.l.A.A., found the Homets on one of their weaker nights and left Angell Field with a very surprising 26-13 victory. Then Kazoo went to Holland to meet Hope who needed only one more win to clinch the M.I.A.A. championship, and the Homets narrowly missed pulling the upset of the year. but finally fell to the Dutch by a 12-7 margin. The final game of the season was a contest between the flying T formation. mployed hy Hillsdale, against the K formation, cr variation of the short punt formation used by the Hornets. The flying T came out on the long end of a 13-6 score. Thus went football. But. although the record was poor, this does not tell the complete story. Although outmanned, the Homets tried hard and deserve credit for effort. Seniors who will be sorely missed include Roy Stricker. Les Greene, Bob Miyagawa, and Vern Mario. However, looking to the future, things are brighter. Many promising freshmen were on this year's squad. and with a year's experience with the single wing, hopes are high for a successful season next year. QQ, - .gi Fi N triggt . .-TC' Lind, ' Q .. It serves only in an advisory position. But this position is an extremely important one, for the Council is the sole representative group acting in close relationship with the student body, the faculty, and the administrative division of the college. Members of the Council include the Student Senate representatives of the four classes. four faculty members, the president oi the college the president of the stud t bod . en y, the dean of men, and the dean of women. Serving in an ex-otiicio capacity are the editor of the Index, the editor of the Boiling Pot. and the director of WIMD. However, an advisory committee can do more than meet for refreshments and pleasant talk once a month. It can be an extremely active, forceful organization, as the Student-Faculty Council has proved this past year. 'I'he Student-Faculty Council has discussed many campus problems this past year. In all its meetings it has proved again and again that when students, faculty, and administration leaders sit down and discuss and act upon mutual problems relations between th ' . e various groups can't help but improve and a better college result. Manny Glasser dropped in 22 points for the losers. The next game found the Hornets at the gym oi the Hope Dutchmen. Hope was really up for this game and they gave the Hornets a 114-95 defeat. Although the Hornets were defeated they looked very good and a promise for a good season was in sight. Manny Glasser and Iohn Gideon were high for the Hornets with 29 points each. On December 9 the Adrian Bulldogs traveled to Kazoo for an MIAA contest. The Hornets won this game by a landslide. drubbing the helpless Bulldogs 88-68. Manny Glasser broke an MIAA scoring record by dropping in 42 points. After Christmas vacation the Hornets swung back into the MIAA contest when they entertained the Calvin Knights. The Hornets gave the highly rated Knights a real battle but had to settle for the short end of a 62-59 score. 'I'he next game found the Homets at Hillsdale. This game had a story book finish with the Dales winning after three overtimes. Olivet was the Hornets second victory as they defeated the Olivet team by a B2-44 score. 'I'he scoring in this game was very nicely distributed among Shell, Schroeder. Wylie, and Gideon with 12-12-11 and 10 points respectively. In the first game of the second semester the Homets entertained Hope. The Dutchmen came to Kazoo with a title seking attitude and they did not go home disappointed as they walked away with a 94-65 victory. 'I'he Homets next game was with the MIAA leader - Calvin. The boys from Kazoo were really up for this contest and played their best game of the year but came out on the short end of the score. Manny Glasser played his first game since Christmas vacation. sharing high point honors with Garry Morrison. The Hornets lost another step in the fight for fourth place in the MIAA standings when they traveled to Adrian. After this loss the Homets scored an 86-64 victory at the expense of Hillsdale. Kazoo tinished its basketball season with losses at Albion and Alma. Albion won a hard fought game by the score of 73-62, winning the game in the last quarter. 61 cz Psychology Club First Row: Marilyn Morrell, Naida Shimer, Gary MacMillan, Patty Victor, Pete Lenox, Dr. Van Liere. Led by the fine running of lim Laltoy and Dale Wilkins, the Homet harriers placed sixth in League competition. However, it must be borne in mind that the team was composed of six men, five of whom were freshmen, the other being a junior, Tim Lemon, the only upperclassrnan of the squad. Two of the freshmen, Don Garwood and Fred Cassel, had never- run in competition previous to this season. All five freshmen had never run the four mile distance before. Iim Lalioy was Kalamazoo's numbr one runner. lim placed high consistently throughout the season. Dale Wilkins. Kazoo's number two man, pushed Jim in the battle for the first position all season long. Tim Lemon, the lone upperclassman, consistently supported Iim and Dale as third man. Bob Gallagher and Don Garwood jockeyed for fourth and fifth spot, while Fred Cassel was the sixth runner. K-College was fortunate in having not one, but two, of the finest courses in the MIAA. The old course is extremely varied. The harriers must run over cinders, black top, gravel, concrete. and sand, along roads and through woods. The Angell course, around Angell Field, is made up of hills, hills, and more hills. 'I'he course is mostly sand bridal paths. with a few pastures and roads thrown in. This course starts and finishes on Angell Field. Highlights from the '53 season were Iim LaRoy's fine running, on a sore ankle and an unfamiliar course, in the MIAA League Meet at Olivet to place fifteenth, Dale Wilkins literally running away with the Homecoming meet against Alma on the Angell course, Don Garwood's steady improvement as the season progressed, and the awarding of varsity letters to Iim LaHoy. Dale Wilkins, and Tim Lemon. The outlook for next year - The Homets will be drawing a bead on the top half of the MIAA in 1954. The team gained valuable depth and experience this year and improved steadily throughout the season. I I Kneeling: Iohn Sweet, lack Bowen, Vic Landeryou, Vern Mario, lim LaRoy, Iesse Schwoeball. Standing: Phil Lewis, Arleigh Dodson, Dave Ross, Les Greene, Charlie Brown, Emil Pollard, Doug Truck Kalamazoo fielded one ot the smallest track squads ever to represent the Hornets. Even though few men are out, coach Ioe Bogart looks for his thinclads to be running hard all season long. The squad has Iim Lalioy, Dale Wilkins, and Tim Lemon, the top three cross-country run- ners, competing in the distance events and helping out in the mile relay. Phil Lewis and Bob Stelle will be running middle distance for K. Vern Mario and Gary Morrison are doing the sprint- ing chores. Lee Van Haaften and A. T. K. McCullough will he topping the timber in the hurdles. Arleigh Dodson will be going for the League championship in the high jump and javelin. Les Greene, less Schwoebell, and lack Bowen are the weight men, throwing shot, discus, and javelin. The distance events look to be in good hands, but Iirn, Dale, and Tim will probably have to double up throughout the season. Phil Lewis, a junior, and Bob Stelle, a returning vet, will have a hard time running the 220, quarter mile, and the relay. Vern Mario, in addition to sprinting, broad jumps also. Gary Morrison is a fast lreshrnan and should do all right. Lee, a vet, and A.T.K., a sophomore, have not run hurdles for some time. Arleigh Dodson, the captain of the squad, will be very strong in the high jump and javelin. Les, Jess, and Iack are all somewhat inexperienced but should handle the weights well. Freshmen out helping to till in are Vic Landeryou, Emil Pollard, Iohn Sweet, and Dave Ross. Rosenberger, Dale Wilkins. In the first meet, against Calvin and Olivet, the following men looked' good. 'Jim LaRoy took first place in the mile. Dale Wilkins was in there for a third and came back to capture second in the two mile event. Phil Lewis got second in the quarter and looked good in the 220. Vern and Gary teamed up tor a third and fourth in the hundred, then Gary ran well in the 220. Arleigh tied for first in the high jump and won outright in the javelin. Ioe Bogart feels that the freshmen will learn from experience throughout the season and that the whole team will round into shape in time to make a good record possible in MIAA competition. Starting oft by splitting against Calvin and Olivet, the team is on its way, pointing tor the league meet in May. Dean Pinchoif TOUY LGSCQIG ia-1 ' I J 1.51 -sf' Another successful tennis season seems to be in store for Kalamazoo College in 1954. The Hornets have a great past to live up to: Kalamazoo has been the resting place lor MIAA trophies every year in which there have been presentations since 1932. And in this period of time. the Orange and Black netters have not lost a single conference dual match. With the coming ol the new season, the Homets are again on top. They are heavy iavorites to continue in their winning ways and add another year's victories and championships to this string oi accomplishments. Under the guidance of Dr. Allen B. Stowe, tennis coach lor the past 25 seasons, the Hornets will field a team that should prove to be one of the strongest college aggregatives in the midwest, regardless of size. The leadership of the team for 1954 will be in the hands oi co-captains Manny Glasser and Bob Casler, last season's MIAA conference singles and doubles champions. Other members vieing for coveted spots on the team will be Tom Smith, Tom Wylie, less Armand, transfer from Haiti, who is the national champion of his homeland. lim Fowler. who was. when in the juniors, among the select named to the Western Lawn Tennis Association ratings, Tony LaScala, Dave Moran, runnerup in the MIAA singles and the other half oi the MIAA championship doubles duo with Casler, and Dean Pinchofi, lone freshman on the team, who, as a senior at Monroe last year, won the Michigan High School Class A championship. Tom Wylie 92 ,I I tml I i 1 I, Dr. Stowe, Tony LaScala, Bob Cassler, Iim. Fowler, less Armand. Dean Pinchoff, Tom Smith, Dave moran, Manny Glasser, Tom Wylie. Tennis The highlight of the spring for the tennis team comes early in the season when the squad takes a swing through the southland during spring vacation. meeting a number of the top teams the south has to ofler. This year's trip, possibly the toughest undertaken by any team in the country, has nine matches, eight duals and one triangular, sheduled to be played within eleven days. One of the high points of the trip is the match with North Carolina, which was rated third in the U.S.A. college ranks last year. and is expected to be ranked high in the standingts again this year. ' Another is the match with Cincinnati, where the number one Hornet will meet Tony Trabert, lately rated by the experts as the number one amateur tennis player in the world. Although many top teams are met on the southem tour they have in the past held their own, and this season should be no exception. Unlike many college teams, the strength of the Hornets extends throughout the complete squad, with so little difference between members that the lineup could be shuffled in almost any manner without making much difference. This factor of depth may prove to be very important to the Homets in some of their closer matches and could mean the difierence between a victory or a defeat. Not only does the scene look bright tor 1954, but also for the tuture. Glasser is the only senior, while Casler, Smith, and Wylie are juniors, Armand, Fowler, LaScala. and Moran are sophomores, and Pinchott a freshman. However, the main project for the year was the sponsoring oi the Model United Nations General Assembly on May 1. With more than 100 high school, college, and graduate students from within a 100-mile radius of the campus participating with students from Kalamazoo College. one day was devoted to duplicating a day in the United Nations General Assembly. Delegations from as many member nations as possible were formed and represented at the Model Assembly, and three international qustions of importance were discussed. These were: admittance ot Red China, adoption ot the Covenant of Human Rights, and settlement ot the Trieste dispute. Its objectives are fun, an outlet for expression, an opportunity for being acquainted with other women on campus, and development ot an active interest in women's sports. This past year the program was under the guidance of Miss Ada Loveless who came to us as the new Wornen's Physical Education Director in the iall of 1953. The sports were put on a competitive team basis and Trowbridge was divided into five equal teams with the town students playing on one of the dorm teams. The competitive season began in the fall with a successful mock track meet and picnic at Angell Field. Tournaments in speedball and tennis singles were also held during the iall. In the winter, competition was held in basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, and swimming. During the spring, softball, tennis doubles, and archery tournaments were held. The entire year's program is climaxed with a W.R.A. banquet at which time the individual and team awards are presented. - Women's Recreation Association W.R.A. Sports Managers . . .
