Dedication TO THE COLLEGE, for its part in creating and molding the lives of future citizens, we dedicate this l953 Boiling Pot. 6 an od at 4 4 'W F ' 715 if, 'Q' u jf: 457 I' , Q: in -7 , , sv m- X .nl S553 f ff ,fff y, f x ,f My jfwf 5 'j Q, Q, F X1 X 3 Q X l 2 l l l l,r Dr. John Scott Everton, president An honor was bestowed on Dr. John Scott Everton, our president, when he was chosen as the representative of the Ford Foundation in Burma, with the responsibility of starting the Foundation's educational program there. One of the major problems in any college is to let the right hand know what the left hand is doing. The most practical way of doing this is through the school paper, the Index. Under the man- agement and direction of the editor, Joan Wood-Morse, this necessary coordination was achieved. The office hummed constantly with activity. The typists, writers, and editors were busy working on the next publication. Working hard but ever so quietly is the Boiling Pot staff. From the beginning of the school year in September the wheels of the new staff begin to turn. This year under the direction of Sue Stapleton and Jean Hathaway the contracts were signed, layouts planned, and copy was edited. James McFadden was in charge of the very important business staff. The photography staff was also on the iob with cameras, putting onto film the everyday life on Kalamazoo College campus. When every- thing was put together, finishing touches were added and the i953 Boiling Pot was off to the printer. The Hornets were victorious and after the outdoor barbeque alumni and students alike enioyed laughing at the various displays around the campus. The dance in the evening was o great success for all. For the freshmen it was the first big college dance, for the alumni it was the reuniting of old college friends. When the last dance of the evening was over, the dancers realized with a nostalgic feeling that the wonderful weekend was over. 7l December - Christmas Clear cold nights, sparkling snow, brightly decorated trees, and Chr -all of this and more make up the Christmas season istmas candles on campus. lt was a crystal night when the girls and their escorts walked through the sparkling snow to Welles Hall for the Christmas formal, The Winter Whirl. There for three wonderful hours they danced in the cool atmosphere created by soft music and blue lights. Along 72 with the excitement of the Christmas dance, there was a calmness of expectation, for the most beautiful service of the year was presented in the chapel, the Christmas Carol Service. Girls dressed all in white and carrying lighted candles filled the chancel, singing carols announcing the birth of the Christ-Child. Marilyn Everett as the Spirit of Christmas lighted the candle of Christmas while Constance Wilson and Laura Blandford read the story of the first Christmas. 73 February 21 - Washington Banquet February, the month of presidents, brings the traditional celebration of the birthday of the first president of the United States. George Washington is honored each year with a formal banquet and dance. This year the atmosphere was festive in Welles as the diners gathered to eat the traditional cherry filled menu. After the dinner everyone went to Hoben Lounge where refreshments were served and entertainment presented. The program then indicated a return to Welles for dancing. The hall had undergone an unbelievable change. White and red cherry trees were everywhere. The dancers seemed to be in Washington's own cherry orchard. When the clock struck twelve. all left the dream world of the seventeen hundreds and went into the cold February night. This was the ond of another wonderful evening on campus. 711. as Our doors reveal students gathering for informal social events. The advisor of the board is Dr. Marion Dunsmore and the chairman this year was Bill Rogers. The board is very important to the religion on campus. Without it we would not have the well-planned religious program that we do. One of the most important weeks of the college year is the Religious Emphasis Week. The theme of this week this year was ls Religion Worth the Trouble? During the week the students not only discussed this question, but also tried to answer it to their own satisfaction. The Religious Emphasis Week Committee had as co-chairmen, Dr. Eugene Beem and Bill Rogers. The speakers were Dr. T. Z. Koo, who gave the keynote address, Mr. Otto Brener, Dr. Homer Armstrong, Dr. Prentiss Pemberton, and Rev. Elwynn Peace. Throughout the week there were chapel talks, afternoon seminars, evening discussion groups, and personal conferences. With the ending of the week, everyone had reached the conclusion that religion is, indeed, worth the trouble. 79 wx .NN J I ? 1 ' f l 1 t H .........- i , 1 X X N A Q X FX' E5 -r S . 1 x Y XN 4 Q I pq. x , I ' -ri ' x . x w ' iiitllf bi? -1 112 .,, n V 1 2 I 1? 4 L 42 X ff f wg ff fff Zwff ,Mffff fy ffjfffdv 4 K -f ff, ff MQ!! ff Qfc X! fff fgfq ff , f fff f 7 ff ffzff f dv f 1 X ' 2 X , 1, ,M W A . During the course of the Hornets 18 game slate, Manny upped his three year scoring total to 889 points, a new all time high and he also set a new single game scoring mark with 37 points against Olivet. As a team Kalamazoo won 11 of the 18 games ten of them in league play The Hornets averaged over 77 points per game for a new record but the opposition poured In over 75 each time another new standard ln the Alma contest Kazoo ege history The Hornets hit for 98 points the highest single game total In K Coll played perhaps their top games of the season in downing Adrian and Hope to tle for the title 90 N ww..Mew.swmf, 1 ff f A 5 Aoi .ya 1 kJ f f f Cross Country Although the Hornets did not field a team for dual meet cross country runs during the season, six men turned out to represent the school in the MIAA run. Best K-College effort was registered by freshman Frank Ziegler of Birmingham who finished 20th. Tim Lemon was 27th, Gene Wright 29th, Phil Shaneberger 37th, Al Harris 40th and John Stommen 43rd. Kalamazoo beat out Olivet for sixth place in the final standings. p Track A rather inexperienced group of track men were on hand this spring to greet Coach lDobl Grow who took over the coaching chores after the departure of Ernie Kirkman. The thinclads engaged in five meets prior to the annual conference run on May 22. Chief point getters for the Hornets during the season were hurdler Roy Stricker, dash- man B-ob Van Horn, broad iumper Vern Mario, high iumper Arleigh Dodson. Other good men were Sam Grow in the iavelin, Dick Brown in the pole vault, shot putters Les Greene, Joe Williamson, and Paul Schut- ter, and miler Bob Copeland. ln the first meet of the season the young Hornets scored 61 points in finishing second to Calvin in a triangular meet which also included Alma. 4-Nt ' 5 'WU Id Il Q 'N 'H 'M . Early season losses to both Albion and Hillsdale nullified Kazoo chances of climbing higher in the standings. Bill Laughlin took over the team this spring and directed his men to a win over Calvin in the first meet. Following the losses to Albion and Hillsdale, the Hornets scored their first league win over Adrian. Top Kalamazoo scorer for the early season meets was Ed Staren, Congress Park, Illinois, iunior. Staren shot a sparkling 7l in the Albion meet and had a 79 against i Adrian. Other members of the squad were Bill Highfield, Alvin Priehs, Monte Nye, Jim Morrell, Jim Hagadone, Dick Stevens, and Joe Williamson. Highfield and Priehs combined with Staren to form the top three players. The entire schedule contained eight matches, six with MIAA foes. 93 1 F 1 1 , I 1 1 1 I 1, .13 ,. 1 I 1 1 1 1 1 I 1 51 1 f 1 F 1 5 I 1 1 E1 1 I1 1 Ei 1 15 51 . 11 I1 gi Ei 1 11 1 1 71 11 11 i 1 4 Left to right- Coach Allen B Stowe Mann Glasser Jack Stommen Dave Moran Bill Littl T . Tennis MIAA champions for the past lo years, Kalamazoo CoIlege's tennis team this spring figured to be perhaps its weakest in some time. The i953 netters, however, certainly couldn't be regarded as pushovers and seemed strong enough to top a good Hope College team for the conference crown. Dr. Allen B. Stowe, veteran Kazoo tennis mentor, lost some top notch performers off of last year's squad in Dick Cain, Tom Willson, and Hugh Dill. Left to carry on were John DeVos, freshman Dave Moran, Bob Casler, Manny Glasser, Tom Smith, and Jack Wolf in about that order for the big matches. The Hornets fared none too well on the always tough Southern trip, winning iust two of eight starts. The picture brightened considerably after returning to the Stowe Stadium premises and K-College again figured to finish well above the .500 mark for the season. Topping the early season list of victories were a 5-4 win over Dartmouth and a 9 to O blanking of the University of Cincinnati. Among Kalamazoo's six Southern trip defeats were those suffered at Duke, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Tennes- see. There wasn't anything resembling a soft touch in that entire array. The schedule in its entirety was composed of l9 matches. 954' i l YI l ll ls 1 E 1 4 l l it ll li I. l it l l l l li 1- l ll l l l l iz 5 Women's Sports The Recreation program for women was once again in charge of Barbara ' Hopkins.
