Kalmukl lllgh School 2705 Kolmulu Avenue Honolulu, Huwull FIRST CLASS CITIZENS. Shelley Moon, Norman Lau, Pamela Kim, Harry Lloyd, Naomi Kuramoto, Samson Rodrigues, and Stephen Yoshihara spread the news about passage of state- hood for Hawaii on Thursday, March l2, 1959. HAWAH. . The 1959 issue of the Ka Hali'a commemorates a historic event . . . the achievement of state- hood for Hawaii. The 40 years of struggle to attain this goal was a long and arduous one. Finally, on March 12, 1959, the United States Congress, by an over- whelming majority, voted to admit Hawaii as the 50th state in the Union. The tolling of church bells and the screaming of sirens heralded a new era in the history of Hawaii. Bulldogs will remember the feeling and spirit of jubilation that spread through the campus with the announcement of the long 50th STATE awaited news. Bulldogs, now first class citizens, have always been, and will continue to be a showcase of American democracy to the rest of the world. Regardless oftthe color of skin or the shape of eyes, the students of Kaimuki share a tradition of American democracy and a common philos- ophy and ideal of government as those students on the mainland. The story contained within the covers of this book will show this to you. May the 1959 Ka Hali'a recall events like these and others that made the school year, 1958- 59, a truly memorable one. malty e iii. gl .P I ff 6 f IG PROBLEM. Each, according to his own personality, trained us for our role as citizens of the 50th state of America. We were taught to appreciate the principles and prac- tices of Democratic Living by their guidance and instruction. Their untir- ing efforts have won our respect and admiration. Henry Principal Kaimuki opened its doors in September to a record number of 1,947 students. The facul- ty, in turn, increased to 71 as compared to the 51 in the 1957-58 school year. The task of coordinating the work and activities for this large group was the res- ponsibility of the administrative staff. Prin- cipal Charles N. P. Henry, friend and ad- mlnistrator, worked wonders with his grow- ing family that filled every building and classroom on the campus. The principal's able assistants, Vice Prin- cipal juichi Honnaka, Registrar Hanako Mi- yamoto, Counselors Seiso Taniguchi and Han- nah Bowman, Student Government Advisor Florence DeMello and others worked untir- ingly to keep the many and varied spokes of the school wheel turning smoothly. And teachers . . . though we gave them some bad times we are sincerely grateful for their interest and guidance, not only in the classrooms but in our extracurricular, social, sports, and other school activities. The English classes aim to develop skills in speaking, writing, reading and interpreting the English language besides pro- moting appreciation for literature and to en- courage reading for pleasure. Before graduation, Kaimuki students read the great treasures of literature from Beowulf to G. B. Shaw. And what fun they had with Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Shakespeare. Many of the more ambitious English students entered essay and oratorical contests and about a hundred students participated in the Speech Festival held on the University of Hawaii cam- pus. At this rate, Pidgin English will soon have to be learned as a foreign language. .V 'ls t 5 if ' gif fx 1 X., . wp zjiifl ' 'Y L .g. . WORLD HISTORY STUDENT-Sophomore World History class studies lessons seriously as teacher, Mr. Herbert Imanaka checks work of Shelley Moon. We Learn About Mon in lair Time Three years of Social Studies is required of all Kaimuki's students. Sophomores learn World History: juniors, American Historyg and Sen- iors, American Problems. All classes studied Geography and Current Events. The Senior American Problems even had a Mock Election just before the Territorial and City and County General Elections. The re- sults were quite similar to the results of the Community balloting except that the Seniors voted more Republicans into office than the Ter- ritorial and Honolulu voters did. Film lessons, speakers on varied subjects and Field trips to study the local Legislature in action all added to a dynamic program of study in In- ternational, National and local problems. Psychology was an elective offered in the So- cial Studies program. This course was offered to students interested in studying the ways in- dividuals think and act in social situations. ml 1 -.,. ..., x - ii i E . cv? ,gs Y as p il' E. V V I . r . , g plul , .5,. A total of 1,947 students were registered, with the Sophomores bearing the bulks of students. The students were quickly oriented to our social life on October 3 when we held our annual Scholarship Dance. The money raised from this benefit dance enabled four deserv- ing seniors to attend college on scholarships. Career Week, held during December 3-5, gave the students valuable information about the different vocational fields they might enter after graduation. The proceeds from the Sweethearts Ball, held on February 13 in the school cafetorium went to the Band department for badly need- ed equipment. New things were appearing in our school life. A new track was laid out in the athletic field, and plans were made for the first Kai- muki High School Annual Invitation Novice Track and Field Meet to be held next year. In our social lives, it was canteens. The Student Government, with the help of the three grade levels, sponsored afternoon can- teens. These were the first ones Bulldogs ex- perienced, and they eagerly turned out for them. Kaimuki students have experienced a pro- fitable and funfilled year which has left a lasting and fond memory in all of our hearts. MEETING COME TO ORDER. At the begining of the year, the Insurance Committee began the task of selling accident insurance policies for the '58-'59 school year. The Handbook committee revised our handbook and edited and published a new handbook for the '58-'59 KHS students. Dur- ing the school year, the Club coordinator committee completed alhlliating each club with the school and suggested many service projects for the clubs. But now as graduates with diploma in hand the years spent at Kaimuki seemed to have gone in a flash. The 511 Seniors who returned to the campus in September were the largest graduating class in Kaimuki's history. They lived up to their motto, Ever Forward with Confidence, as they plunged into the many senior activities planned for the 1958-1959 school year. An Orientation assembly in October started off the year with Class President Louise Field introducing Senior oflicers, Adviser Mrs. Lorraine Chang and Senior Record Room teachers. Class Picnic day on Dec. 12 turned out to be a lovely, sunny day despite weather predictions. Dressed for a carefree day, the Seniors jammed 10 buses and arrived at Kailua Beach Park for a day of fun and play and eating, of course. On Class Day, March 19, the class colors turquoise and white sparkled the campus. An assembly and a special edition of The Bulldog commemorated the day for the Seniors. The Senior Prom on May 8 at the Hawaiian Village Longhouse was the climax of their year's social activities. It was truly a Night to Remember with the girls in their lovely gowns and the boys looking handsome in their dinner jackets. The long awaited Commencement Day on June 7 came at long last. In caps and gowns, the seniors walked up to receive their diplomas, while proud parents and relatives watched with quiet happiness. With poise and confidence, the 1959 graduates take a step forward into the life beyond the campus. In the tradition of American public educa- tion, they have the privilege of going to school to learn and to have fun and fellowship while practicing the basic ideals of American democracy. They lived their lives on the campus in the traditions of free America. 'hui 0 J Q 'iw 41 I ., , : fa wr. xii I if ag... lg.. I..- '2 jeanne Stewart Pfesidenz 3 -A, 1, L2 xi:- f .3 1, fi K I? An orientation assembly early in the year welcomed the stu- dents who were now members of the junior Class. Juniors, under the chairmanship of Timothy Choy, served the school by making Christmas mail boxes to spread holiday cheer during the yule season. March 5, 1959 will always be remembered in the hearts of all the juniors as a day of gaiety and fun. Their class colors, pink and black, were seen everywhere on the campus on this, their Class Day. A luncheon-banquet was followed by a talent show put on by various junior students. A special edition of the Bull- dog, edited by janet Ogata and assisted by members of the Jun- ior Class, was also part of this gala occasion. All juniors will remember their junior Promenade, which was held on April 18. This memorable occasion was held at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The high-light of the Prom was the crowning of the junior Mr. and Miss, who reigned over this fes- tive occasion. These were just a few of the many things the Junior Class undertook, enjoyed, and accomplished. Mrs. Edna Wong guided and advised the Junior Class. Her tips and hints and the cooperation of all the students of the junior Class made this year a very successful one. PLANS FOR PROM-junior Council Officers. Brenda Ignacio, Leonard Gouveia, Jeanne Stewart, Robert Gore, and LaVerne Nishimura make plans for the junior Promenade. An active intramural ' sports program encouraged more Bulldogs, both boys and girls, to participate in sports activities. A track field was laid and our football team came close to winning the top pennant in the Honolulu Interscholarstic League. The man responsible for administering the athletic program at Kaimuki is Mr. Albert Minn. We thank him for his interest and inspiration. His pep talks at the rallies did much toward building up team morale and school spirit. And a Zlihglaqf 'Good Team! QW-Us Herbert Imanaka Head Coach New head coach Herbert Imanaka set out and accomplished the great task of developing a good football team. Being a new coach, he had to overcome many difficulties that all new coaches have to cope with such as developing his own plays. The proof of his success is found in the team standings in which Kaimuki tied for third place. 120 Edward Neves Ass't Coach Assisting Coach Imanaka and also coaching the Junior Varsity this year was Edward Brno Neves. He was there at every game, boosting the team from the sidelines. As the new Junior Var sity Coach, he also developed a good team that wound up tied for fourth place. GRID REVIEW TEAM STANDINGS The upstart Kaimuki Bulldogs under new Coach Herbert Imanaka ended the 1958 Hono- lulu Interscholastic League gridiron season in a three-way tie for third place with McKinley and St. Louis. Early in the season, the city's sports dopesters unanimously placed Kaimuki in the cellar posi- tion but after dropping their opening game to Punahou, I4-19, the Bulldogs suddenly un- leashed a stunning drive and speed to upset the favored Farrington, Iolani, and St. Louis teams in their next three games. The Bulldogs were checked by the League Champs, the Kam Warriors, 0-40, but defeated Roosevelt 14-12. Kaimuki lost to the McKinley Tigers, 12-22, in the final game of the season. The Bulldogs won the draw for a Turkey Day berth and played against the Tigers in the dou- ble-header for the first time since 1953. Until the Kam game, the Bulldogs were in the running for the top pennant in the Inter- scholastic League. Kaimuki's Bulldogs attempted the most passes, 145, and completed the most, 52, and had 790 yards in the League. The Bulldogs came mighty close to winning. TEAMS Kamehameha Iolani ..,,. Kaimuki ....
