Their eyes, their burning eyes, rolled about the room and bumped, clung adhesively together. Polly, the green phial ! She shuddered as she grasped the meaning. Then the triumph of courageous love welled through her. My Ashur, we cannot live together, but we can die together. Not die, 1ny dear, but pass together into lands where there are no landlords. From tl1e cupboard she took a sinister phial of green glass. A little black pill lay against th:e white palm of her hand. She gave him its companion. There is no other way. she said. No other way, beloved Polly. The pills were no longer in their palms. Great sobs choked her. His green eyes were submerged in tears. Kiss me, my Ashur, one last kiss. My Polly! They sank upon the pallet. Since he was a gentleman, Ashur allowed her to lie upon the solitary pillow. He should have felt the ire of all bergs clutching at his throatg he should have felt the heat of all deserts wither his brain. Then he should hive heard the buzzing of pink bees amid fields of j-onquils. should have seen the red lips of l'olly greeting him at the onyx portals of the happier land of no landlords. He did not, however. He had not swallowed the pill. Polly was very still. She must be dead now, he thought. And then, remorse-for him. But only for a moinent. The vision of the fat widow who took in washlngs and whom also he was eager to marry, ffounteracted whatever qualms of conscience hemight have had. Poor Polly! At least, she had loved him. That was flattering, if it had not always been comfortable. He sat up to look at her face. At the same moment. Polly did likewise. She had not swallowed her pill either Her own heart was wanrdering towa1'ds a wealthy blacksmith, and her vanity had led her to believe that only by death she could amputate Ashur. lt's a gay life, but -it has its limitations. JOHN FISH. FUN AND FACTS Miss Jess had been reading to the class about the great forests of America. And, now, boys, she asked, can any of you tell me which pine has the longest and sharpest needles ? Vp went a hand in the front row. Well, Johnnie Lee? she encouraged. The porcupine, triumphed Johnnie. Miss Rolle asked her class the meaning of tl1e word furlough. A. J. was called on and said, It means 'a muleg it says so in a book. Miss Rolle asked to see the book, and it was brought forward. At last A. J. came to a soldier, sitting on a mule. At the bottom of the picture was written, Going home on his furlough. Mr. Chapin, wishing to purchase some almonds and pecans, entered a confectionery store and took his stand before the case. After waiting some little time without being noticed he raised his voice and said, Here! Here! Who waits on nuts?
