The nude trees shuddered in their shame agalnst the shivering sky. liare limbs cracked, black leaves erackled. 'l'hrongh the broken windows wheezed the whistle of the wind. The studio and the attic were cold. Not even the passionate poe111s of Ashur, or the most passionate pict- ures of Polly could nurse the thermometer back to health. Polly lay upon the pallet. , Her pallette lay upon her but she had no paint with which to paint. A cough racked her, but she had no cough drops. Her once blowsy lips were blue, but she had no lipstick. The poor creature to keep from freezing. had put on three pair of silk stockings. n She rose. She took off her shawl. her simple, shabby shawl of scarlet and magenta with purple and orange fringes. She wrapped it around the plaster cast of s0mebody's Venus. You need it more than I, mon enfant. A step upon the stairs, a whole flock of them! The girders of the building shook. Plaster t'ell from the ceilings of all the other attic studios from the first floor up. Lightly as a linnct comes my lover, she lilted. The flame of dead April burned lavender in her eyes, the ghosts of old Jlllll' roses played around her hollow cheeks. lle did not open the door. There was, in fact, no door to open. They had burned it long ago for fire wood. Ile posed upon the sill, ragged, unshavenl. but beautiful as a cougar 4-ooing to its mate ill the mountains. l'olly I into the name he poured the ecstasy of a sequence of sixteen sonnets. She flung herself upon him. She kissed his brow, his nose. his month, his chin, his A.dam's apple. t' ld, other lovers had called her. lDarling. he murmured, see what l have stolen for yon. His pale fingers flour- ished as a tZ.tliph's might, fluttering over chests of priceless gems, and he produced a dog biscuit. How good you are, my Ashur, she blubbered in her ecstasy. He brushed her gratitude aside. ' Yesterday, you brought me birdseed. Today, you bring me a dog biscuit. Tomor- row--who knows? You may find a gold fish waferf lthnbracing each other between bites, they devoured their dog biscuit. Even the wind grew less whining as it watched them. What need, my friends, has youth of Hamburg steak and pea pottage, when it has lips that kiss? Yet, their meal ended, melancholy draped itself about her. Perhaps there were few- er calories in his kisses than of yore. Or, perhaps, they lacked vitamines. tlh. ASlll1l', she 1nutte1'ed somberly, it cannot' be. l shall not argue with you, my adored Polly. lf you say so. it cannot. I am dragging you down-keeping you from being a sublime poet. ' tin the contrary--fthough it may be unpolite to contradict a lady-were it l10t for me, you might be hung in the salon. An artist can have only art as his mistress Ashur, you must forget me. Impossible, my Polly. lt is you, wl1o must forget me. Ashur, l love you so. I will make the great sacrifice. I will return to my rich husband. Was it horror or hope that glimmered in his eyes? l'olly 1 'But she cried wildly, No, no, Ashur! l shall not have it said that I am faithless. l'olly 1 Was it disappointment or delirious joy which twitched his mouth? Uh, Ashur, we cannot live together and I cannot live alone. Noi' l, Polly. What, shall we do?
