Barefoot Dancers Not Christmas was celebrated by holding a Snow Ball, Serra's first dance, in the newly-opened gymnasium. Since the gym hadn't been available during Newcoming week, Queen Roberta Ott and her lovely Princesses were honored at the dance. In this way, the Snow Ball was a dual Newcoming and Christmas festivity. Through the efforts of a talented decorating committee, the gym was transformed into a Christ- mas wonderland. Red, green, and white crepe paper cascaded from the ceiling in the form of huge domes, under which couples could dance. Cook VII was the featured band, and students eagerly danced to its tunes throughout the evening. Despite early complaints of dancing in bare feet on the new gym floor, the dance was a big success. Sweetheart 's Ball Attracted Cupids The Sweethearfs Ball was held on March 4 from 8 to 11 P.lVl. and provided a full night of variety and entertainment. The dance was held in a cupid-and-heart decorated gym and was Serra's first formal dance. Students were elegantly dressed and many couples took advantage of the opportunity to have pictures taken. The sounds of 'Flash' filled the gym, and students danced, talked, and mingled with friends and peers. Although some students sat out during each dance, the floor immediately became crowded when couples had the chance to hold their partners close as the band played their version of Just To Be Close To Youv, which was also the theme of the dance. Many students purchased the drinks and baked goods being offered by members of the Parents Teacher Student Association. The refreshments helped after a gala night of dancing. During the course of the evening a King and Queen were selected from many candidates to reign over the dance. Lonnie Manzano and DeeDee Coggins were honored in the crowning, and the next dance was reserved for all candidates following the coronation. For most students, the Sweethearts Ball was an expe- rience to remember. 36 Student Life
