School Revealed Un il rgF ces The first school day at Serra High School was a very unique one, for it was not only the first day of school but the opening day of Serra itself. For many students the first day of school meant goodbye to summer fun and the luxury of sleeping in. But to other students it meant an end to boredom and a chance to develop themselves fully. In the morning, counselors passed out the schedules and a student information pamphlet equip- ed with a map of the classrooms, etc. Most students disregarded the basically useless map and asked the aides stationed around the campus for help locat- ing their classes. Once the students managed to find classes, they found their new classrooms very different. Everything was unfamiliar and new, and the majority of the classrooms were unorganized. The students didnt seem to mind the situation es- peciall after they were told about shorter classes no be ls the newest equipment and facilities and many more advantages. Mass confusion was every- where and it was easily detected in the facial ex- pressions of the students as well as the teachers and the administration. At the end of the day most students compared notes on the new school and de- spite the unorganization and severe confusion most students agreed that Serra was a school they could be proud of! For once the Tierrasanta and Murphy Canyon students would be united in their own school instead of being scattered throughout the district -. .--, First Day 1 X X an , with .I s wiv , gi ri la F , 4 7 7 x . 7 . 1 . au.. .-q- 'shunt 3' i 1 3 i

New Path For Serra Students Among the many new aspects of Serra High as a community school was that of being able to walk to and from school. This was a big change, as all students attending Serra were previously bused to different school locations throughout the city. Being close to a school they could call their own, students could walk back to school for athletic practices and events, projects, club meetings, and dances. Crowds of students on the sidewalks, especial- ly before and after school, are now common sights. This adds to the feeling of a community-type situa- tion. The biggest crowds were the seventh and eighth-grade students, who covered the street cor- ners and sidewalks in masses as they returned home honischool .Skateboards and bicycles were popular altema- tives to walking for the junior-high students, as were cars for many senior-high students. An added benefit was the short distance to local shopping centers so that lunch periods found students leav- ing campus for a greater variety of fast-food stands andsnackfoods i.l,ii..iil.liiQ..if.l,..i.i.lLlLif.Qi,l,L'ii llllill i .
