JUNIPERO SERRA HIGH KHOOL 14B3D SOUTH VAN NESS AVENUE • GARDENA, CALIFORNIA 9 D 2 4 9 DAVIS 4-6675 FA 1-D377 CDNDUCTETD BY THE MARIATJISTS January 1981 On December 9, 1951, Francis Cardinal Mclntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles, dedicated the new Junipero Serra High School in the city of Gardena. In the modest origin and surroundings of Gardena, Serra has grown into a citadel of Christian, educational, athletic, and multicultural prowess struggling to meet the exciting challenges of the 80 ' s. The Society of Mary (Marianists) , a religious order of men (priests and brothers) dedicated principally to the works of the education of youth, were invited to assume the responsibilities of administration at Serra High School in the fall of 1950. Three Marianists and three lay teachers comprised the first faculty of Serra High School in 1950. These six men set the tone of dedication which would characterize Serra throughout the thirty years of its existence even to the present. From its first graduating class of 27 members in 1953, Serra has graduated more than 3,300 young men into professional, civic and community careers. The 60 ' s were the most lucrative years for Serra as the enrollment soared to nearly 700 with 18 Marianists on the staff. In 1965 the graduating class numbered 169. In the Marianist tradition, Serra seeks to be a Christian community characterized by family spirit in a total Christian atmosphere of living, caring, sharing, and working together to achieve excellence in studies, character, and involvement. The total family effort and charism are the keys to any realized successes at Serra High School. The faculty and staff, the parents, the students, alumni, alumni parents (especially our own Angle and Hoped Balakian) are all integral to the vitality of Serra High School. In this our thirtieth anniversary year, Serra maintains its superior standards of academic excellence, boasting of student successes at major colleges and universities throughout the United States — Harvard, Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, U.C.L.A. and U.S.C.. Athletic prowess (capturing the first League Championship in football and advancing to the championship playoff for the first time in the history of the school); projecting the finest basketball season in the school ' s history; cultural and civic involvement of our students comprise some of the realized objectives of our school. The one man, Marianist, priest, and educator, who has done most to meet the challenge of the 70 ' s, and to whom Serra owes its continued existence, is the former cherished and esteemed principal. Very Reverend Bertrand Clemens. Brothers Leo Rausch, Harold Hammond, Charles Boglitz, Michael Chu, Albert Glanton, and Reverend Patrick Philbin form the core of dedicated Marianists who continue to meet the challenge of ministry in the 80 ' s by the example of their lives, love and service to the poor, powerless, people of God in Gardena and the South Central and Western areas of Los Angeles County. In collaboration with other generous and dedicated religious and lay teachers, who adopt philosophy and objectives of our school, Serra ' s future will continue to be viable, vibrant and productive. The Marianists, in order to foster our Union with Jesus, and as faithful sons of the Blessed Mother, will continue to offer all our hopes and consolations, our distresses and our doubts, our lives, love, and service that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit may be glorified in all places.
