Changes from as httle as one class to another, grade to grade, freshman to varsity; to changes as big as driving a car, obtaining a job. or becoming independent. At times we have control over life ' s changes, many times we do not. yet we have to live with these changes for better or for worse. Life has many perils and learning to deal with these perils is all part of the ultimate change — the change from today ' s high school young man to tomorrow ' s MAN. Rev. Donald F. Father Clemens ' devotion and dedication are deeply appreciated, yet now he is greatly missed. At the end of Fa- ther ' s fourth year, he was appointed Master of Novices at the Novitiate in Cupertino. Good Luck Father Clemens, our good wishes and sincere prayers are with you . . . Bro. Some of the Serra students join the present Marianist ' s community to pray for the FUTURE JUNIPERO SERRA HIGH KHOOL 14B3D SOUTH VAN NESS AVENUE • GARDENA, CALIFORNIA 9 D 2 4 9 DAVIS 4-6675 FA 1-D377 CDNDUCTETD BY THE MARIATJISTS January 1981 On December 9, 1951, Francis Cardinal Mclntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles, dedicated the new Junipero Serra High School in the city of Gardena. In the modest origin and surroundings of Gardena, Serra has grown into a citadel of Christian, educational, athletic, and multicultural prowess struggling to meet the exciting challenges of the 80 ' s. The Society of Mary (Marianists) , a religious order of men (priests and brothers) dedicated principally to the works of the education of youth, were invited to assume the responsibilities of administration at Serra High School in the fall of 1950. Three Marianists and three lay teachers comprised the first faculty of Serra High School in 1950. These six men set the tone of dedication which would characterize Serra throughout the thirty years of its existence even to the present. From its first graduating class of 27 members in 1953, Serra has graduated more than 3,300 young men into professional, civic and community careers. The 60 ' s were the most lucrative years for Serra as the enrollment soared to nearly 700 with 18 Marianists on the staff. In 1965 the graduating class numbered 169. In the Marianist tradition, Serra seeks to be a Christian community characterized by family spirit in a total Christian atmosphere of living, caring, sharing, and working together to achieve excellence in studies, character, and involvement. The total family effort and charism are the keys to any realized successes at Serra High School. The faculty and staff, the parents, the students, alumni, alumni parents (especially our own Angle and Hoped Balakian) are all integral to the vitality of Serra High School. In this our thirtieth anniversary year, Serra maintains its superior standards of academic excellence, boasting of student successes at major colleges and universities throughout the United States — Harvard, Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, U.C.L.A. and U.S.C.. Athletic prowess (capturing the first League Championship in football and advancing to the championship playoff for the first time in the history of the school); projecting the finest basketball season in the school ' s history; cultural and civic involvement of our students comprise some of the realized objectives of our school. The one man, Marianist, priest, and educator, who has done most to meet the challenge of the 70 ' s, and to whom Serra owes its continued existence, is the former cherished and esteemed principal. Very Reverend Bertrand Clemens. Brothers Leo Rausch, Harold Hammond, Charles Boglitz, Michael Chu, Albert Glanton, and Reverend Patrick Philbin form the core of dedicated Marianists who continue to meet the challenge of ministry in the 80 ' s by the example of their lives, love and service to the poor, powerless, people of God in Gardena and the South Central and Western areas of Los Angeles County. In collaboration with other generous and dedicated religious and lay teachers, who adopt philosophy and objectives of our school, Serra ' s future will continue to be viable, vibrant and productive. The Marianists, in order to foster our Union with Jesus, and as faithful sons of the Blessed Mother, will continue to offer all our hopes and consolations, our distresses and our doubts, our lives, love, and service that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit may be glorified in all places. Our wings sometimes falter yet sometimes swift and sure but those which are the strongest are those which best endure. We live our lives as we fly away only to be judged on another rising day. Winging our way through time and space in hopes of reaching a greater place. Flying across ocean and sea as the world ahead unfolds before me. But sometimes we fall helpless and aghast and during times like these we sometimes ask What do you do when you are lost? Do you find your way back at any cost? Or do you go on not giving a care where you ' re going or if you ' re there? I must know where I ' m supposed to go ' cause ignorance and fear keeps me slow. It should be no sin to want to know deciding whether to come or go. A thought is a thought silent or said even if it ' s a fragment inside my head. If I ' m not careful thoughts will bring me down chaining my freedom captive to the ground. On shoulders of luck and wings of change we take our chances on each hill and range . . . . . . for now we fly on with dreams high and free but my greatest dream, my final act is what I make of me ... upon the wings of change. The celebration of Mass should be the high light of each month with the Christmas Mass being the most special liturgy of all. This year the main concelebrant at the Christmas Mass was the newly ordained Rev. Allan Roberts from Ma- ria Regina Parish. 54 The Royal Lightenstein Circus gave Serra a most entertaining visit. The circus jugglers dis- played their skills with such slick daring and balance that the stu- dent body was amazed. The wiz- ardry of the magicians and the humor of the clowns were also greatly appreciated. The student body hopes for an encore next year. 55 ACADEMIC AWARDS ASSEMBLY Brother Ed Johnson congratulates academic award recipient. Guy Hill Mr. Chester L. Washington, publisher of The Wave. during his inspiring address to the student body during the awards assembly in September 1980. The awards assembly was closed by the traditional singing of the Alma Mater. The day is all smiles for the honor students of September 1980: Dexter Winzey. Gustavo Lopez. Jay Ruffin. Milton Scott and Cato Johnson. High academic excellence is a high priority at Serra. For this reason, honor students are sin- gled out in an awards assembly held each semester. Those who are honored receive trophies, plaques and certificates for ex- cellence in studies and service to the school community. 56 Mr. Mallory Matthews, an alumnus and former teacher at Serra, was the inspiring guest speaker at the February Awards Assembly. Brother Ed Johnson congratulates the students achieving 4.0 grade point averages for the first semester of the present school year, Milton Scott, Mi- chael Profit and Jay Ruffin. as Mr. John Crag in looks on approvingly. The students achieving highest honors with grade point averages of 3.75 were Barnie Rodriguez, ustavo Lopez. Eugene Profit. Harold Mealey. Stacy Heads, Elden Hodges. The key to success is understanding and communication. Johnny Shelton, Jr. 109 Like any thought that proceeds from the mind of man. it is not a true reality unless it is expressed in its proper prospectives. Likewise, no person can be understood unless he expresses himself clearly, or at least in a manner in which he can be understood. Thus, the process of evolving a concept into a reality undergoes critical analysis until the producer is satisfied with what he has created. So far it would seem that everything there is. at one time or another, was once nothing but an idea: an idea that took a dreamer, thinker, and or a doer to make It real. But sometimes these people never get a chance to express themselves, causing the thought to go on unnoticed and undeveloped. On the behalf of that cause, we are giving those people the opportunity to present some of the works and ideas they have been able to make a reality. Although thinkers areni always those who have something to say verbally, they do have a lot to express in other forms. They also express themselves on a plane perpendicular to themselves. The best way to the concept is to explain the term self expression. Self is: the Soul that the idea springs from. the Energy that is exerted to make the idea real, the Life that fills the idea when it becomes a reality, the Fulfillment that is reached when the concept behind the reality is understood. ■;- ' - ' ■ In these next few pages, we will present the works of some of our thinkers, dreamers, and doers, whether in plain, artistic, or poetic form. These works Will be called, SELF EXPRESSIONS Ali Rahim Curry ' 81 ' p Beautifying, communicating. Visualizing, loving, realizing. Picasso. Michaelangelo. Rembrant. DaVinci. Feelings. You follow behind to cover my trail for as a human I am very frail. You walk with me at my side filling my being with enormous pride. I walk ahead but always toward you because you do for me that no others do. Mind Useful, creative. Learning, listening, trying. Your own gift of power. Contemplating! Rail A. Bonnette ' 84 Friend - ' helpful, kind always working, playing we ' ll always be together brothers! Harron Gauldon ' 84 In The Spring Time I know where you are if I look for you and don ' t see for I know that you are inside of me. You are my Lord and my brother too and for this I say that I love you. Ali Curry ' 81; Spring in the Sierras is the most beautiful time I know. The mountains which stretch skyward are still covered with beautiful snow. The lake gleams an icy blue. The green grasses are just peeking through the melting snow of the meadows. As one travels past mountains and deep gorges, one encounters gur- gling, rushing streams. The varied rock formations of the mountains begin to show through the snow. Small animals rush across the roads. The whole land is fresh with the smell of pine. As one travels through miles of pines and redwood trees one feels as though the world must have been like this at the beginning of creation. Roean Stuart ' 83 Mark Hebert ' 81 ■ ' WW ' ' • ' ■.V ■ i ?■■■ ■ ■ ■■ Friends People say You ' re my friend. I ' ll do anything for you. But will that friend do the same for you? Maybe he will, maybe he won ' t, but it ' s okay unless he don ' t. Friends are those who always care for you and others without compare. And with that care comes a love that will place your friendship high above. Friends are kind and extremely nice they think about you more than once or twice. Friends overdo even if you underneed, wondering how much before they proceed. Friends do for you without you having to ask. they don ' t hide their feelings behind an empty mask. If there is something that you need or even that you want If your friend has. it ' s yours without a tease or taunt. But don ' t abuse your friends for the possessions that they hold because you won ' t be friends if they leave you cold. You also must be the best type of friend that will stick by a side until the very end. If you and your friends get through the strain and strife you will be the best of friends for the rest of your life. Ali Rahim Curry ' 81 ?U£g OP,. %l ' fU $H Reed Richards, alias Mr. Fan- tastic of the Fantastic Four. He is known as Stretch by the Thing, the Human Torch, and the Invisible Girl. ART: An expression of life that few understand and an even fewer amount of those who can create or re-create. Art expresses man ' s dreams, fantasies, needs, wants, and somet imes, his reality. It all depends upon the way the beholder sees it: the tran- quility, the violence, the beautiful, the ugly. It is all there and there to be seen by all. Ali Rahim Curry ' 81 112 Robert Currie ' 82 The FinaJ Mistake On an average day I see at least four or five accidents. Today was not any different. On the Santa Monica freeway this afternoon I noticed a wreck involving a small foreign sports car and a large truck. An ambulance, with lights blazing and sirens blaring, screeched to a sudden halt in front of the wreckage of the small car. They gave a swift kick and the door fell to the hard, unfeeling asphalt below it. The scene that I next beheld made me feel as if I were being stung by hundreds of small, icy needles. I witnessed a face maimed beyond recognition and a body that hung limply in the seat. The interior of the car looked as if someone decided to change the color of the car ' s interior from sky blue to deep, dark red. The dismal science of blood and gore had made me nervous. I broke into a cold sweat. Beads of salty, bitter sweat dripped to the edges of my mouth. Over all the ruckus I could hear one of the paramedics pronounce the man dead, and also that his last drink was his final mistake. Thomas Harris ' 83 NOVA: The sixteen year old superhero. Being so young and inexperienced, he doesn ' t know all the power his body contains. But as times goes on, he ' ll learn what he has acquired from his benefactor from space.
