Inspite of the good spirit of Serra, the closing of the 70 ' s brought tragedy: the death of a senior, Steven Lee. Steven was truly a Serra man, actively involved in sports and academics. Steve excelled by expressing his emotions through his poetry and art. As we move into the 80 ' s, the memory of Steven Lee moves with us. FIREBIRD Steven Lee I saw a dark bird flying by That resembled death in the sky It soared with its wings spread wide And zoomed forward as if caught by a tide. But then as it soared in the path of the sun It seemed to change until it had become . . .a Firebird! Alive! A paragon of life and death A symbol of hope and despair That electrifies the air. I saw then that the ugliest of things could be good And that life was not what it seemed as I Stood . . . hypnotized I watched the bird glide high in the sky When it screeched out and spoke to me It said I am the symbol for all to see . . . I am free! Firebird! Alive! A paragon of life and death A symbol of hope and despair A creature living within the spirit of man. It Is free! Firebird! Alive! A paragon of life and death A golden symbol of our happiness We are one! 17
