Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1979 volume:

A Message From Fr. Bertrand Clemens S.M. These are the most challenging of times, and these are the least challenging of times. Our era leaves little for challenge, when so very much comes so easily. A flick of a switch brings us into instant contact with joyous and tragic events in every part of the world. The touch of a button results in heat, light, food. Throw-away clothes, dishes, toys, and containers lighten the work load. Every imaginable mode of transporta- tion takes us speedily and safely to new and distant places. Enjoyment, pleasure, recreation are at fingertips. The list continues on and on. Yet these are the most challenging of times. Life has become cheap. Involvement with others is a forgotten virtue of another era. Inflationary economy and lack of energy brings fear and concern. Thousands of hungry, dejected, and oppressed peoples still exist on this rich planet. Deep hatreds of one nation or people for another continue to smolder and often erupt. These and similar conditions need changing and Tightening. The most unfortunate condition today is that the good people do so little, while those who are evil are never idle. There is a need for men to work for the good, to get others to work with them for these same goals, and to enlist institutions to do the same. The agenda for the good man is long, complex, and difficult for it primarily demands a changing of people and a changing of power and political structures. But this is the work of every Christian and every well-intentioned person. Serra endeavors to develop men who are real leaders โ€” men who are free, independent, intelligent, moral, and social minded. These are the men the world needs today. With such leaders these most challenging of times can become the best of times. STUDENT LIFE โ€ข V Q f RALLIES OUTRAGEOUS Serra rallies played a substantial role in creating school spirit. Vice-president Eric Boyd, who coordinated the rallies this year, was quite successful, involving different students from the four divisions to help plan and produce the rallies which were more enjoyable than ever. Though a few rallies failed to generate school spirit, most were outstanding. Anything from monsters to Serra cheerleaders could be seen at some of Serra ' s normal rallies. Gong Shows, goons, gorillas and girls. Laughter, loonies, and lovely ladies. Rallies were outrageous and successful, and they closed the decade with spirit and grand participation ย %. 10 1. The choir is composed of students and alumni of Serra plus young women from the community. The choir has grown consistently and has increased the number and scope of its presentations. It now sings not only at Serra but also at a number of churches and schools in the area This year the New Vibrations sponsered a gospel concert featuring several groups ' performances. Aside from the singing of the choir, the impact of Masses at Serra was strong because of the events they celetjrated. The communith participated in two memorial celebrations honoring students who died. Although these were not happy occasions, they did touch the students, faculty and friends of Serra deeply. They were indeed expressions of the Catholic faith which is at the core of Serra ' s identity as a school and as a community of believers in Jesus. Through these Masses the people of Serra found that the living mystery of Jesus does not make life easy but, certainly deeply meaningful. Steven was truly a Serra man, actively involved in sports and academics. Steve excelled by expressing his emotions through his poetry and art. As we move into the 80 ' s, the memory of Steven Lee moves with us. FIREBIRD Steven Lee I saw a dark bird flying by That resembled death in the sky It soared with its wings spread wide And zoomed forward as if caught by a tide. But then as it soared in the path of the sun It seemed to change until it had become . . .a Firebird! Alive! A paragon of life and death A symbol of hope and despair That electrifies the air. I saw then that the ugliest of things could be good And that life was not what it seemed as I Stood . . . hypnotized I watched the bird glide high in the sky When it screeched out and spoke to me It said I am the symbol for all to see . . . I am free! Firebird! Alive! A paragon of life and death A symbol of hope and despair A creature living within the spirit of man. It Is free! Firebird! Alive! Under moderator, Fr. Patrick Philbin, the organization ran a series of weekends on which students became more aware of themselves, others, and ultimately, God. In November, 1977, the development of the program began. Founders, Mark Allen and Eric Boyd, along with students from Serra, St. Michael, Regina Cell, and St. Mary, decided to begin a program for high school students similar to a program for adults in Orange County. Since then, over 400 students have made a Search weekend. So large had Serra Search become, that a board of directors was formed. Serra Search is now an established organiza- tion, and now, there are male students from different high schools, thus extending this new program of youth minis- try to high school students. The Serra Search Board for 1977-79 was Mark Allen and Eric Boyd (president and vice-president, respectively), Ja- net DeCoud, Andre ' Gueno. Teresa Gueno. Steven Jack- son, Rosemary Jones, Patrice Legaux, Nick Merchant, Shellynne Phillips, and Bobby Spann. Not only in the activities, but in encouraging other mothers to help. One mother said, There was the feeling that they knew me for years in the Mothers ' Club. In initiating ping pong at lunch and extending the number of Homecoming finalists, the student government did its best to create a Serra of tomorrow . What they could not change, they tried to improve. Senior patio, an area tor Seniors only, was taken more seriously this year by underclassmen. Announcements were given a new twist. With the help of T.V. crew and moderator, Mr. Bruce Langedyke, the student council televised the daily announcements on Serra ' s closed circuit t.v. A totally new idea was attempted at Serra and St. Mary ' s Academy. Together, both student councils developed a two day program called St. Mary-Serra Student Exchange. During the first day of the program, student leaders from Serra went to St. Mary to evaluate several of the classes. These students were to describe the student-teacher attitude and relation. Hosted by St. Mary, the day included an assembly, lunch, and a St. Mary student council meeting. St. Mary students came to Serra on the second day. Save for the assembly, the young ladies received the same treatment and schedule. r 1 ' m I 1. 1978-79 Student Council I to r: Dewayne Birdsong. I.C.C. This theme was reflected in the copy, cover and artwork as well as in the treatment of all of the people of Serra and the events which shaped their lives. Due largely to efforts above and beyond the call of duty by co- editor Mark Allen, the book struggled into existence. Many others helped as well as the staff and advisor, Mr. Langedyke, tried to deal with this year ' s story of Serra in a creative way. 1. Yearbook staff: Bart Hall. Rod Thomas, playing the outfield, makes a catch for the fly-out in a game against Bosco Tech. 3) Horace Randolph loosens up his arm by taking a few pre-game throws. 118 1) Junior Don Lombard makes the catch for the out in a recent home game, and hurls the ball back into the infield. 2) In a home Camino Real League game, Brett Crane (not shown) gets the throw to first base just in time as Roy Bragg, senior, makes the out. 119 J.V. Despite the talent of star runner, junior Arnold Fisk, coach Gary Gall ' s varsity finished with an 0-4 mark and took last place at finals with 143 points. It was also a long season for the Serra J.V. Cross-country team, as the Cavalier distance runners could finish no better than last in the Camino-Real league. Their record of 0-4 was identical to that of the varsity, so it was a slow year all around for the Cross-country program at Serra. Both teams have one virtue, though. They are made up primarily of young runners. So, despite finishing the 70 ' s on a low note, there is room and time to grow. The cross-country unit hopes to be in contention in the next year and decade. 1. Varsity Cross-country. Standing: Monroe Lewis, Levi White. Arnold Fisk, Sherman Brooks, Raymond Lyons, Rene Fisk. Beginning very early in the spring he stressed basic track concepts and demonstrated proper techniques especially in the sprints and hurdles which resulted in many early season meet victories. The weather was not particularly cooperative and often meets and practices had to be postponed or cancelled due to rain or a flooded track. 1 5 Breaking the tape means a first place finish for senior Wally Green and junior Arnold Fisk. 3- Varsity track; standing: Mike Pipion, Justin Grisson. UNDERCLASSMEN - NO THREAT SENIORS UNMATCHED This year in intramural football Serra High School had its ups and downs. For the first time in the Past four years the underclassmen posed no threats. Plagued by mysterious no-shows and forfeits, the frosh and soph classes lacked the enthusiasm to match the lowest of senior classes. The junior division lead by Andre Allen, Cleo McClain and Andre Moore provided the only challenge to the powerful seniors. 132 HOMEROOM 27 UNDEFEATED INTRAMURALS FOOTBALL CHAMPS The highlight in this year ' s intramurals were the Seniors. Led by homeroom 27 and the always powerful Cookies of homeroom 9. The Seniors brought life and flair into an otherwise apathetic audience. Each day the P. A. was filled with the feats of such gridiron favorites as Ricky The Swan Lastrapes and intramural Ail- American Darnel Dorsett Parker. The crowds grew larger and everyone participated as an unprecedented undefeated record put Parker ' s Pirates of homeroom 27 on top. Intramural Football Champs for 1979 RE-BIRTH OF 3 ON 3 BASKETBALL Ideas have their way of coming and going. If the idea is a good one, it may last through many years and may even become a tradition. But sometimes, an idea may become a reality for only a couple of years; and then, it dies. And so it was with 3 on 3 Basketball. Initiated at Serra In 1976 by the Black Awareness club, 3 on 3 survived for only two years. However, the 70 ' s would not end without the rebirth of 3 on 3. The White Hats club brought back this short-termed tradition to Serra. Under the direction of John Young and Eric Boyd, president and vice-president of the club, 3 on 3 was successful from the first game to the championship game In which the team of Patrick Lombard, Jerome Gibbs, and Tracey McMurray defeated the team of Gregory Bellmar, Michael Copeland, and Kevin Williams to become 3 on 3 Basketball Champs. %ii J ' jS .s :i; !M ?m i: l J safsj fcfe ' -โ– sr ' ' ' .S- โ–  . โ– โ€ขโ€ขi ' ' T Wi f? :m- jr ' . The family of Dion Coleman, a junior, visited the school the celebrate a Mass in memory of their son and brother. Once again this year we sadly pondered the mystery of life and death. We deeply considered Dion ' s passing and will remember. A WORD FROM THE EDITORS The 70 ' s were an age of creation for Serra: the development of a drama club and eventual Thespian Society, the increase of the Homecoming court, the development of new clubs, and more. Change was evident throughout the faculty and student body. As the faculty integrated, the student body became less integrated. The El Padre attempted to capture all of this throughout the 70 ' s as it has for the past 25 years of the El Padre ' s existence. I sincerely hope that the El Padre will successfully continue its annual summations throughout the coming 80 ' s. Because of the accelerated pace of change and creation, it is quite difficult for anyone to predict the future of Serra. I just pray that God will continue to protect and guide Serra in and beyond the 1980 ' s. I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr. Langedyke for his guidance, advice, and patience throughout the past year. Many thanks go to Henry Beceiro, for his outstanding contribution, and to some of the El Padre Staff. Mark E. Allen Co-Editor-in-Chief Living through the 70 ' s has been a time of great change. Politics, economics, music, television, school, almost everything has changed. Even the world as a whole has changed. In my four years at Serra, I have seen changes take place within the school. I have also seen changes take place within myself: the pride and spirit that I have in representing the school through activities and sports. This was one of the main reasons why I attended Serra โ€” to have respect for Serra and for my fellow students. You do not come here to get away from public schools, or because your parents made you come. I pray that the students of the classes of the 80 ' s have this kind of attitude, or Serra will undergo another change in the future. I would like to thank the staff for helping the El Padre make the last of the 70 ' s a meaningful remembrance, and I hope that in the 80 ' s the El Padre will still be as it has always been-a 1 yearbook.
