Clerical And Maintenance The People Behind The Scenes Behind the scenes as a theme for a yearbook took on flesh and blood in the persons of Mrs. Alberta Runge, Mrs. Pam Badon, Mr. Noe Cadena, and Bro. ' s Leo Rausch and Harald Hammond. Mrs. Runge continued to serve students and teachers in the main office as she has for many years. Mrs. Pam Badon, senior John Badon ' s mother, took on the tasks of principal ' s secretary. This was her first year at Serra as an employee. Mr. Noe Cadena applied his years of experience in business to Serra ' s financial problems as book- keeper assisted by Bro. Hammond who returned to the school this year after working at Marionist Provincial Headquarters in Cupertino, California. Bro Leo Rausch, in addition to running the book- store, worked in the main office. He has worked at Serra for nearly two decades. Ssw,. : 34 _ | Bro. Leo Rausch: bookstore, main office. Mr. Noe Cadena: bookkeeper. Bro. Harold Hammond: assistant book- keeper. Mrs. Alberta Runge: school secretary. Mrs. Pam Badon: principal ' s secretary. Mr. Tony Lopez: custodian. Mrs. Nora Hooten and Mrs. Clair Brunone: cafeteria. Mr. Severo Fernandez: gardener. Mr. Jung Shik Pae: janitor. Student Life i s .: - j classes ■OIRI The role of teacher and student in the classroom has changed a considerable degree since the 60 ' s. The classes here at Serra are a model of the prevalent attitude of close teacher-student inter-reaction. Each probes the other in search of answers. Most restrictions have been lifted as to what you can and cannot say, giving the statement seek and you shall find credibility at J.S.H. Everything from sex in marriage to the pro ' s and con ' s of communism is discussed freely and openly in an aca- demic atmosphere. The courses, or learning experiences, are diverse but yet focus on the necessary skills needed in a fast paced society. Everything from the delicate strokes of a brush on a time consuming work of art to the precise incisions on the abdomen of a fetal pig can be found behind the wooden doors of Serra High. 24 1. Acting as the villain in a skit during Mr. Francis ' drama class, Michael Ruddy stands triumphantly over John Fejes. 2. Theodore McCrary has a case of the Monday morning blahs during third period Spanish. 25 Freshman Welcome Week Seniors Welcome Freshmen To Serra Family Tip it! was the catch phrase during a very successful Fresh- man Welcome Week. Seniors and freshmen alike were eager to engage in the many activi- ties planned by the student council. The first activity was The Auction where seniors bought freshmen just as trad- ers bought slaves many years ago. The frosh, a very cooper- ative group, seemed to be in awe as they watched the sen- iors roll out the green bills for their prospective fresh meat. Later in the week, as the activities went on, contests which pitted frosh against frosh clearly exhibited the good spirit among all. Thus the week was a big success as both winners and losers came through with the Good Ole Serra Pride. 26 1. Although there is no music playing freshmen Delton Davis and Tony Verture boogie down. 2. Strength exhausted, these frosh slowly sink into Senior Walk. 3. Jon Smith emcees Freshmen Welcome Week dance contest. 4. The winning side of the tug-a-war begins to pull the other team onto Senior Walk. 27 Thespians Reach For Stardom The school year, 1977-78, for the Thespian Troup 2676 was as successful as it was exciting. The Serra Thespians were entertainers indeed. Perfor- mances proved superlative in many competitions that they entered. A Midsummer Nights Dream, the Sha- kesperian story of six bumbling actors, took the Thespians to such competi- tions as Dominguez Hills, Long Beach, and Harbor Colleges. The profession- alism of the performances was con- veyed so well to the audience, many of whom were drama coaches and judges and experts in the field, that A Midsummer Nights Dream was chosen for the National Thespian Convention in Oakland. Competition was only one aspect of the Thespian Society. Serra had become prominent in play production too. The Serra Thespians performed play after play with outstanding success, expected of fine actors. Such plays were Murder on the Orient Express, Charlie ' s Aunt, Night of January 16, and The Importance of Being Earnest. 1. An elegant ship traveling along the Nile sets the scene for murder and deceit in Agatha Christie ' s Murder on the Nile. Bottom row: John Francis (director) and Steve Jackson. 29 The Serra men and the female associates proved to be professionals in the truest sense of the word, in their portrayals of the many different characters from each play. Acting, student directing, stage crews and directing all made Serra ' s Theatre Arts Department unusually good for high school drama. 30 1. Behind the scenes in drama class. Club Activities Throughout it ' s history, Serra has been outstanding in offer- ing a wide variety of clubs. This year was no different. Such clubs as Aerospace and Tennis were active, existing only through the participation of the student body. When the clubs were threat- ened by an apathetical depres- sion, the Inter-Club Council proceeded to develop a sys- tem which would resurrect them. Students were polled for their interests and the club activities were adjusted to meet their needs. This system channelled Serra students toward greater in- volvement, this making a most surprisingly successful year for Serra ' s clubs. 32 1. offstage T.V. crew member Bryan Frank focuses his camera on the main action. 2. During a lunch break, sophomores Avery Burns and Arnold Fisk play a round of chess in one of the tourna- ments. 3. Ken Sison and Tom Zdraiek, part of the Executive Board of the Serra High chapter of the CSF, discuss plans with moderator John Cragin on the up- coming Scholar Bowl. f r 33 The Cavalier The Cavalier, the school newspaper, is more than the average everyday ordinary throwaway line birdcages or polish your shoes on newspaper. The paper ' s success this year can be attributed to moderator Mr. Francis and his hard working staff. The Cavalier reported all events about Serra, in- formed the students, and acted as a medium to transfer school spirit. Working at the Gardena Valley News headquar- ters, the Serra newspaper staff had a taste of what a real newspaper goes through in production. In between the original writing of the stories and the copy you receive the stories are typed, re- typed, a trial printing, more correcting, and the final print is set. This year the staff that worked with the Gardena Valley News media in production of the school newspaper was John Smith, managing editor, Chris Davis, Tim McKindley, Mark Allen, John Fejes, and Paul Baratti. Top row: Henry Beciero, Lawrence Williams, Tim Mazur, Mike Ricks, Henry Bell. Middle row: Myron Montgomery, Booker Cole, Mark Al- len, Dereck Braud, Paul Baratti, Chris Davis. Seated: John Fejes, Darnel Parker, Jon Smith, Paul Clark, Tim McKindley. 34 The El Padre Documenting a school year is an awesome assignment, an assign- ment deserving of a highly competent group of people, and that is what this annual had. From mid-July to May the staff labored over photographs, copy, page designs, and every minute detail that made this yearbook. Seniors Jorge Wong and Ralph Gutierrez, two of only three return- ing staff members from last years annual, headed the program with the guidance of Mr. Bruce Langedyke. The remaining editors were John Powell and Darren Casonhua with Tom Zdralek as Business Manager. Mr. Langedyke said of the staff, Of my three years as yearbook advisor, this one has been the best. I 1. As the deadline approaches, editor Jorge Wong checks the pages that are to be turned into the publisher. 2. The El Padre staff examine pictures with the Cavalier editor, John Smith. 3. In a rare moment of peace, layout editor Ralph Gutierrez thumbs through the Los Angeles Times. 35 Student Council Gets Involved Behind the scenes of the stu- dent government were six young men. Under the guid- ance of a strong moderator, these men worked together to make the year 1977-78 a memorable one. With the help of homeroom presidents, the student council opened the Serra doors to neighboring sister schools, St. Michael and St. Mary. After long hours of preparation-sometimes weeks- the student govern- ments of these schools and Serra filled the school year with outstanding events. The student government gave a new kind of spirit. Participa- tion in rallies, game and dance attendance, and involvement in activities, flavored with the council ' s enthusiasm generat- ed a sincere pride throughout Serra ' s school year. Better public relations topped with hard work and determi- nation made the Serra student council a proud, upstanding student council. f fffffffffft 36 w- 1. As the Serra alumni came together to relive some of their high school days, people waited to see who would become the 1977-78 Homecoming Queen. Tension mounted during the week as the young ladies came to be interviewed, each hoping to make the court. Danielle Andrews, Derozette Nicholson, Paulette Oliver, Jill DeCoud and Donna Collins made appeal- ing speeches to the student body on Friday after- noon. The big moment came Friday night at the game when ASB Secretary Jon Smith announced that the 1977-78 Homecoming Queen was Danielle An- drews. Danielle was crowned by Cathy Girard, Ser- ra ' s 1976-77 queen. ' ' IIIIMII -- ' ' ' ' iflilllilf m '  1. Seniors Greg Southern and David Tillman interview prospective homecoming finalist. 2. As they walk men on either side sing. And so begins a Serra mass. New wrinkles have been added to an old but distinguished face. Modern dancing, electric guitars, and synthesizers are but a few of the cosmetic additions made in our masses so that they may relate to our society. I I i M ■A 1 1 t 40 :4M li,- ' - . These men are the members of the Booster ' s Club. The Club ' s members consist of the fathers of Serra students and alumni. The Booster ' s basic func- tion is to assist the school in some of its monetary and maintenance needs. This is accomplished through fund raising activities such as casino night and the annual fiesta. The Booster ' s are also active in athletic events, as ticket sale Monitors and in assist- ing security patrols. They also help the Mother ' s Club in the Snack Bar and wherever they are need- ed. A good way to sum up the support the Booster ' s give Serra is in that loud cry of C ' mon-n-n Serra! ;J 1-4 Fashion Show stars Dwayne Bird- song, Lillian Brown, Darren Casonhua, and Jon Smith. 5. Mother ' s Continue Hard Work And Support Of Serra Each week this year a group of nice ladies was seen helping out around Serra. They worked in the snack bar, bingo, and even did some fund raising with the Annual Fashion Show, Parent Dances, and the Fiesta. These helpful women are known to Serra as the Mother ' s Club. This year the officers were as follows: Tayde Guerro, president; Marie Frank, first vice-president; Pauline Big- gers, second vice president; Pat Ricks, recording secretary; Zoila Gutierrez, corresponding secretary; and Laura Collins, treasurer. These ladies made a contribution of their time to help Serra High students. They ' ve all earned gratitude of the faculty and students. 45 Vocation Week I firmly believe that there are many stu- dents at Serra who would be excellent Church ministers. Fr. Pat Phiibin, head of the Religion Department, thus ex- pressed his concern that the students at Serra consider whether their response to God ' s presence in their lives might involve a life as a priest or brother, mis concern lead to the organization of Vo- cation Week, a time to learn about the varieties of religious living. Classes were given over to speakers from various religious organizations. Of special focus was the need within the Church for leaders from the black com- munity. A highlight of the week was the celebration of the liturgy on Friday which was enhanced by an unusual offertory dance and the presence of several guests. 1. Paul Gopaul, an Edmundite priest and professor of history at Cal State, L.A. 47 Desmond Thompson, senior, brought an enthusiasm to football rallies that had many upper-classmen and veteran teachers commenting: Not bad ... A positive, fun spirit was alive in the gym. At this writing there has been no assembly. Rallies honored a tenacious football team. They brought before us cheerleaders from neighboring schools. This high school of approxi- mately 550 students is the home base for 7 varsity, 7 ju- nior varsity, and 2 freshmen sports — sports than range from baseball to volleyball. This year the Cavaliers boast of their most successful varsity football teams, an productive basketball program (a program whose varsity team was pre- dicted to be 1 in its league this year), and the returning 1977 Camino Real League Vol- leyball Champs. Although some of our teams were not as prosperous as others they all possessed that one indistin- guishable quality that makes Serra team standout, persis- tence. This will not be the Cavaliers last year as a leader of prep sports in Southern California. For with every new class, there is the raw material for a true Cavalier, a Serra athlete. 83 Pride Burns Throughout The Varsity Football Squad It ' s quality that counts, not quantity. This adage described this year ' s surprising varsity football squad. With Steve De- Coud returning as the only all-league performer from last year the team seemed to be in for a long and frustrating season. Not so. Under the tutelage of head mentor Gale Hipes and assistants Gene Simon and John Campa the squad, though few in number and small in size, kept alive Serra ' s tradition of quality and discipline. With a 1-1 preseason tally and impressive w ins over Verbum Dei (defending league champs), St. Bernard ' s and Salesian, the Cavaliers next faced arch-rival Bishop Montgomery to decide first place in the Camino Real League. They envi- sioned a league title but, as had happened so often in the past, thev failed to handle the Knights and dropped to second place. After a Cantwell tie and a surprising loss to St. Anthony ' s Serra needed a victory over Murphy to have any chance of making the playoffs. This time the Cavaliers w ith- stood the pressure by winning and finished 5-3-1 — a tie for third place. Their hopes of a league title were gone and a chance to be in the playoffs for only the third time in history depended on tne flip of a coin Preparation For The Games •__■1. The vigil. For many on the team the high point of the year was the long trip north to Santa Maria. The fact that the trip ended in victory and a prom- ise of a second-round game against Antelope Valley only sweetened the excursion. Antelope Valley overpow- ered Serra but coaches and players alike looked upon their season as a success. Round two of the CIF playoffs had only been reached once before by a very strong ' 74-75 squad. The 77 Serra team did it with 27 men. 88 1. Unfortunately, an opening game loss to 3rd ranked Muir started the season off on the wrong foot. The Cavaliers had disappointing perfor- mances in the Pacific Shores, Bever- ly Hills, and Inglewood tourna- ments. (They went into all three seeded 1). Returning starters, Mike Zeno, Joe Copeland, and Barry Walker pro- vided the fire power and leadership for the Cavaliers as they began league play. The team pulled together to defeat St. Bernards 61-55 in the first game. After easy wins over Cantwell and Salesian, they fell prey to Verbum Dei, the 1 team in the C.I.F. and the nation. They closed out the first round of league action with a 4-1 record and sole possession of sec- ond place. They started off the second round with a tough victory over St. Ber- nards. With four games and a re- match with Verbum Dei remaining in the league race, the Cavaliers hope to emerge 1. They will then enter the C.I.F. playoffs with a chance of becoming the C.I.F. 4-A basketball champions. 90 1. In just a few months the third new coach in three years orga- nized a new herd of runners by emphasizing unification - running as a team. The season was spent develop- ing talent, endurance, and friendship. By creating the right attitude toward practice the team set the pace for fu- ture cross-country teams to build upon. 1. He believes he has accom- Elished this to some extent y increasing the team to 19 members. There was a well balanced attack this year consisting of 4 seniors, 4 juniors, 5 soph- mores, and 6 freshmen. A- mong these athletes there were several outstanding leaders. The most valuable runner of the varsity team was John Spyder Powell who came in first against Murphy, second against St. Bernards and Cant- well, and fourth against Saie- sian. Varsity Soccer: Another Season In just the third season of soc- cer at Serra under the new leadership of Coach Ed Duarte and James Mason the Serra soccer team, rated a lucky fifth, surprised the CRL teams by threatening for league cham- pionship early in the season. In the see-saw battle for the championship the Cavaliers experienced victory and de- feat in a well balanced league. Seniors that strengthened the team were power player Darryl Gradington and three year let- termen Julian Balderas and Charlie Montano. Under coaches Andy An- derson and Bob De Allen, the team re- corded a 3-3-1 mark which placed them third in the Camino Real League. The team had a lot of spirit and showed it by winning some very important games. They beat Bishop Montgomery 26-0 and sneaked by Salesian 7-0. Beating opponents by as much as 20 points the J.V. ' s upheld and molded a tradition of a winning basketball pro- gram. Head coach Mallory Matthews and assistants Jim Masterson and Art Lyons had only 2 re- turning members from last year ' s squad to build upon. This lack of experience as well as size did not hinder these Cavaliers from attaining the number 2 spot in their league. Leading scorers Wally Green and Gilbert Crummie, along with Ricky Walker, Michael La- Bomme, Lawrence Breland, Victor Holbert, and a strong bench, kept our J.V. basketball team in control of most of their games. Changing from a zone de- fense to man-on-man resulted in better quality play from the Cavaliers who allowed only one goal in the second half. Using man-on-man defense, Serra went against St. Bernard. ' - ' ' The football intramurals provided a chance for the not too physical players to display their athletic talents on the field. The 1977-78 football intramural champion was HR 27. With a 4-0 record going into the play-offs, they met HR 26 in the finals, a team that had beaten the COOKIES of HR 9. The final game proved to be an even match with the Moranians coming out on top. The score 20-12. 132 1. On a keeper freshmen Greg Priestley runs to his left to avoid Mr. Crowell ' s homeroom rush. 2. Dwayne Cox high steps his way to the corner of the end zone for a Cookie TD. 3. A heavy rush on his back, sophomore Delton Davis scrambles to his right while looking downfield for an open receiver. 4. David Williams grabs a piece of Greg Priestley ' s sweat pants in a futile effort to stop this long touch- down run. 5. Topless junior Darnel Parker turns on the speed while rounding the corner. 6. Senior Kevin Garnier ' s blocking gives quarterback Jeffery Hughes enough time to unload a pass. 133 Basketball Intramurals 134 • ' el  . ■- l« ¥ The basketball intramurals, the more participated sport of the two intramurals offered at Serra, got off to a late start this year due to the heavy rains. At the time of this writing the championship had not yet been decided, leaving only speculation of who would be number one on the Serra courts. The favorites this year were senior homerooms 27, the football intramural champions, and the Cookies of 9. 135 Senior Directory DINO ALSTON: Intramural Football 1-4; Intra- mural Basketball 1-4; Paper Drive 4. Langedyke met with my co-editor Ralph Gutierrez and myself to lay the ground work for this year ' s annual. Revisions, suggestions, and thoughts were aired at these meetings, which were also attended by other staff mem- bers. As the new school year began directions and goals were set. We soon realized that flaws were slowly creeping into are well made plans. Apathy by some staff members could have meant a disastrous yearbook, were it not for the efforts of students Darren Casonhua, John Powell, Tim McKindley, David Powell, Paul Baratti, Ken Sison, Tom Zdraiek, and Bryant Ennis. I thank these men for their efforts in the production of one of the finest, if not the best, yearbooks Serra has ever had. h-J . ' r:
