RALPH WALDO EMERSON lifi IUA Before arriving at Serro High School in 1961, Mr. Charles Donovan had taught at Riordon, the Marianist High School in Son Francisco. After this assignment he undertook the task of achieving an advanced degree at La Sorbonne, the famous Universite ' de Paris. Beginning his new assign- ment at Serro, he taught language, his specialty in the education field, and since then has continued to teach French along with Latin. Under his supervision and through his efforts, the French Club sent one of its members to France on a study-tour plan in the summer of 1965. He was moderator of the EL PADRE one year. At present he is chairman of the language department, moderator of the C. S.F. and French Club, and a member of the Principal ' s Council. But in the eyes of Serro students this is not Mr. Donovan To them he is the French-Latin teacher in 1 1 -C; the teacher who makes every class, on every school day of the year, an adventure and an enjoyable ex- perience; the teacher who makes them satisfied when they leave his class, because they know that they hove learned something; the teacher to whom many Seniors haven ' t spoken English since Freshman year. Passing on knowledge is his greatest joy, and a smile covers his face whenever he realizes that a student has grasped a new understanding of Latin or French. Students recognize him as an excellent teacher and that is why he is held in such high esteem. Because of his unique qualities, he commands the highest respect from both students and faculty at Serro High School, and it is a privilege to hove him here Therefore, it is an honor to dedicate the 1968 EL PADRE to Mr. Charles Donovan. 14 m mmm Dedication to a cause, fifty years of dedication; this is the essence of Bro. Richard Stauble. Bro. Richard was born in Louis- ville, Kentucky. In Dayton, Ohio, on March 31, -1918, he pro- fessed his vows as a Marianist. He has devoted his life to Christ by helping his fellow man. He taught grade school for forty- five years in Brooklyn, Washington, D. C, Pittsburgh, San Fran- cisco, and Hawaii. During the last four years, he has rendered his services as a general handyman and maintenance supervisor here at Serra. The El Padre, and all of Serra High School, would like to extend their congratulations and thanks to BROTHER RICHARD STAUBLE on his Fiftieth Anniversary of service to the Society of Mary. Man must meet man, nation meet nation, as brothers and sisters, as children of God. In this mutual understanding and friendship, we must also begin to work together to build the common future of the human race. Pope Paul VI HIS EMINENCE JAMES FRANCIS CARDINAL MclNTYRE Archbishop of Los Angeles VERY REVEREND BERTRAND E. CLEMENS, S. M. Provincial Superior of the Pacific Provinc BROTHER ROGER RICHTER, S. M. Director of Education of the Pacific Province 16 4 M ■j 1 mm ADMINISTRATION BRO. WILLIAM BOLTS, SM Principal; Alumni; Social Studies Chairman; History Seminar; Morianist Superior Dear Graduates: Our decade seems to live in a state of per- petual crisis. Some crises are certainly real, while others manifest a lack of direction so prevelant among people of today. Whatever their origin they still require the reflective man to evaluate the ideas, social conditions, or acts which generate these crises. It is our hope that the challenge and environment of Serra High School during your four years has given you the capacity to evaluate, to view the world and man from a Christian stance, and to relate to God, Our Father, and to your fellow man. In o recent college commencement address Bob Hope humorously pointed out that he was supposed to launch the students from the rare- fied academic atmosphere into the world, but that he had just been from there and didn ' t know if he wanted to let them loose in it. Bob Hope notwithstanding, we know that we can be confident in this world with a spirit of Christian hope and optimism to motivate our lives so that we can leave the world a bet- ter place for our having lived here Your Morianist and lay faculty is confi- dent that you have progressed toward these goals during your high school education. The class of ' 68 has been unique in many aspects — leadership, academic excellence, imagina- tive programs and ideas. It is your responsi- bility now to continue your maturing, so as loyal sons of Serra you can exemplify our school motto, the words of Christ, Be You Witnesses For Me. Sincerely in J. M, J. SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT — Mike Botello The Golden Years of the Class of 1 968 ended in June, with a mingling of nostalgia and regret. During their first year, the class of 1968 became ac- quainted and involved with the spirit of Serra High School, by forming their own Frosh Spirit Club. In their time, there was seen the first Sophomore homeroom to win Homeroom of the Year. In their Junior year, this class abandoned the traditional Junior ring design in favor of a collegiate style. The final year was characterized by a successful Fresh- man Welcome Dance, an ingenious Homecoming, a suc- cessful football season, and high academic recognition. The Senior division also coordinated its class activities under the new office of Class President. The accomplishments of the Class of 1968 are rec- orded, but the atmosphere of initiative, perseverance, individuality, and school spirit, left by the Class of 1 968, will always remain with the school. 36 David Abeyta IVIichael Aguilar Wiw Edward Albao IVIichael Andrecht l,J.i -Hf Don Arillotta James Aspaas Darrel Astin Neil Babcock INDIVIDUALITY CHARACTERIZES SENIORS M David Baratti Leo Barclay Michael Barela Richard Barker Edward Beardsley Mark Burnett Joseph Butler Gary Carbone Did Most For Serra Francis Carothers INDIVIDUALITY DEVELOPS CHARACTER Shawn Carroll James Carson Jerry Catania John Chavez Charles Christcnsen Richard Ciampa Leave some for the kid! Emblematic of Freshmen is enthusiasm, and enthusiastic they were. They participated actively, if not reluctantly, in Initiation Week, and presented a fine Spirit Week. Their foot- ball team caught the fever, as did their bas- ketball team, demolishing all opposition stand- ing meekly in the path of their League Cham- pionship. The Class of ' 71 displayed co-opera- tion and initiative by their lofty Homeroom Drive standings, sports achievements, and fresh imagination in their novel newspaper, The Scarlet Pimple-Nel. Beyond this, the Freshmen were especially gifted with talented leaders. Under the supervision of Divisional Moderator Mr. Steve Ramirez, they completed a successful first year and prepared to take on their role as Sophomores. 68 THE FRESHMAN CLASS Freshmen helped to promote spirited rallies. And like every year, the Seniors were waiting to greet them. However, instead of the usual massacre from the very first day, the incoming Freshmen were granted a reprieve of one week to accustom themselves to the ways of a Cavalier. But on the following Monday, terror reigned. Beanie- topped slaves were auctioned off by Frank Voce, Chief Auctioneer. Tuesday was designated as Dance Day, and a preliminary to the finals on Friday was judged by Ed Zine. Wednesday ' s Car Wash Day proved to be a travesty as the slaves wet cars in a flimsy pretense of clean- ing. A premature break for the Freshmen occured on Thursday as they were taught the Serra cheers and the Alma Mater. A contented Phil Lucas 77 Friday new and more diabolical schemes brought additional fear to the already humiliated Freshman as they were subjected to Initiation Court. Court, pre- sided over by his Honor, Frank Voce, sub- poenaed all rules-offenders, and officially charged them. Orlando Loera defended the obviously guilty parties but to no avail as prosecutor Gerry Milani proved their guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt. Fri- day ' s activities culminated with the run- ning of the LeMans Tricycle Race, dance finals, and punishment of the convicted. At the end of the assembly, Tim Philen passed judgement over all the Freshmen, but this time they were found guilty of being Cavaliers, subject to all their rights and privileges. j i w ij-n-ter-i - ' i. 78 FRESHMEN TAKE TIME OUT FROM STUDIES FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES IL ( W JH B ts - H ■jm i jy 4 ' • £ J K S v H | Bk ' ' .1«N! , ' 82 .A:e.-. They demonstrated their spirit and enthusiasm with an excellent Christmas Dance, Spirit Week, and decorations for football games. The Sophomore homeroom 10-B Squirrels be- came the 1967 Intramural Football Champs. Ac- tive participation in all drives was highlighted when homerooms 10-E and 1 0-C placed first and second respectively in the Blue Chip Stamp Drive. The cooperation displayed by the Sophomore di- vision is an excellent indication of what to expect in their final two years at Serra. 84 THE SOPHOMORE CLASS Gilbert Aguilar Fernando Aquin Jorge Aquin Ricky Arroyo Anthony Azemard Steven Berber Richard Becker Mark Bero David Birgen George Blackwell Edwin Brewer Craig Daniel Carroll Brian Cashin Sheldon Clemens Michael Compean James Crowell Phihp Dambach m I Thomas Cooper John Cragin Dennis Croven David Crowder Thomas Davis Robert Deakins Michael Delgado 85 PROGRESS DEPICTS AN Michael Enriquez Romiro EsparzQ Christopher Gahan Michael Galalioto Walter Garcia Bruce Gilliland Mark Graber Joe Gualano 86 ACTIVE SOPHOMORE CLASS Michael Gurule Jerome Haffley George Gerald Guebely Hammervold Craig Anthony Harradin Gugliotta The Mafia. Besides leading the Speech Club and the school newspaper, they adopted the theme Roaring 20 ' s for Homecoming Week, which was a big success. They also re- ceived the annual privileges of choosing their class rings and Junior Prom site. Helping the Juniors through a successful year was Bro. John Haster, their Divisional Moderator. By participating in various classes, clubs, and sports offered to them, the Class of ' 69 pre- pared enthusiastically for their Senior year. 92 THE JUNIOR CLASS Wayne Allen Samuel Anger Steven Archuleta Richard Arios Michael Larry Bartasavich Josef Baumann Leon Beouchman William Bernal Greg Bero Charles Boone Donald Boucher Robert Bellmore Juniors help count cans during a successful canned food drive vV li; j,,jlliH;,, 93 REBELLION Keith Boutte Gary Braun James Brown Bruce Cullen Kenneth Deokins Brice DelForo Poul Desjardins Paul Dever James Dixon Philip Dragotto Darryl Duncan Michael Elliott Derek Engelbert Kerry Eskeli John Evans Thomas Feeley Paul Fetter 94 STIMULATES LEADERSHIP Gregory Fitch Steven Frederick Nels Stephen Frederick Frednckso William Gallwas James Michael Garcia Gioia Tony Albert Gualano Garkow John Haddy Stephen Hoxmeier Michael Hughes Brian Hurley i«W Tim — Johnson -i- f Steven t- i Jones f Thomas . Changing times has provided the STUDENT COUNCIL with new experience in the direc- tion of governmental activities. Effectiveness and dedication have characterized its effort. Under the guiding hand of Bro. John Master, STUDENT COUNCIL has set the foundations needed for the success of future Councils. Long hours were spent in providing an up- dated dress code. Despite the differences of opinion in the body, the COUNCIL seemed to be united in its goals when the gavel struck at eight o ' clock. The STUDENT COUNCIL awarded their worthwhile efforts at the end of the year by providing themselves with a banquet and a trip. ■! . ,-.-. .... Z ••— ' ■' • ' ' ' Mlf wiii Miiiliff ' ' 10? THROUGH UNIFICATION Steve Dzidc President of Club Council The INTER-CLUB COUNCIL was formed last year in the coordination of campus club activities. The CLUB COUNCIL this year de- veloped its organizational structure and meth- ods of operation. It has coordinated the pro- jects of all the various clubs and sponsored several of its own. For example, the CLUB COUNCIL sponsored the gigantic Christmas tree in the cafeteria at Yuletide. It also held the first annual Faculty-Senior Brain Bowl on Chaminade Day in which the faculty soundly trounced the seniors, with the score 390-180 EXECUTIVE BOARD PROVIDES LEADERSHIP Thom Milligan Student Body President Rising out of the ranks of common Serra students, Student Body President Thom Milligan gave back to the individual a voice that seemed to have been lost. Act- ing as a guiding light, he has led a suc- cessful drive for constitutional revisions. It can be well stated that Thom Milligan has come to the aid of his school and his compatriots. Bro. John Master Moderator of Student Activities As Moderator of Student Activities, Bro. John Master has led the youthful student government and a wide range of its activi- ties to a state of proficiency not matched in Serra ' s history. 104 Robert T. Philen Student Body Vice-President As Student Body Vice-President, Tim Philen was responsible for in- novations in all Serra High School social functions. New assemblies were a mark of excellence that char- acterized his term of office. Marc Edwards Student Body Secretary Student Body Secretary, Marc Ed- wards, gave new insights to the re- sponsibilities of enacting effective communications. He has widened Serra ' s relations with girls ' schools by extending contacts from two to nine schools. All students were kept informed by his constant attention paid to the bulletin board. 105 Steve Mailloux Student- Body Treasurer Balancing the financial scales of student government has always been a tedious job. But Student Body Treasurer Steve Mailloux, the Silent Figher, has qualified himself as a responsible administrator on the Executive Board. A revamping of intramurals and the Homeroom of the Year Drive has been an effective success. Girard Milan! Student Body Chief Justice Chief Justice Girard Milani, symbol of the Serra individual, ably exe- cuted his judicial functions. This was strengthened by the modernization of the dress code, especially in the case of the allowance of turtlenecks on campus. 106 Steve Dzida Int-er-Club Council President Steve Dzida, serving as President of the Inter-Club Council, effective- ly led the group through its first year of existence. Through his work in the Council, student government ran much more efficiently this year. EXECUTIVE 80ARD ■ii.i ' mii 107 )l IB i J STUDENT COURT — M. Botello, J. Laffan, M. Wooten, G, Milani, D. The first concern of the editors was to improve the quality of the articles. After several issues of experience, the articles reached the standard of quality that was desired. Having attained the de- sired quality, the staff broke new ground by expanding the scope of the paper to six pages. This enabled wider coverage and appeal. The CAVALIER was the second newspaper in the nation to adopt this new, six-page format. Mr. John Casas moderated the madhouse, while Frank Voce and Dana Gioia shared the post of Editor-in-Chief. The book itself contains about twenty more pages with more complete coverage on almost every phase of Serra ' s activities this past year. Adding to the quality of this edition are color endsheets and special division inserts. The man pushing all the staff was the moderator, Mr. Doug Reiss. He spent many hours in the EL PADRE room with the print- er and staff trying to iron out problems and convey the desires of the staff to the print- er. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be your- self. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress your- self with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be, and what- ever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. We have endeavored to introduce new and varied ideas — unusual in the pro- duction of past yearbooks. To the staff, yearbook production is the sound of frustrations, of ideas, of compromises, and of disagreements. A year- book staff depends on many people, for many reasons. It is for these people that this is written, so that we may publicly thank them for their assistance. Mr. Jack Cannicott, our printer, who gave invaluable time and help in the production of this yearbook. Al Treretola of Alfred and Fabris Sfudio, who provided photography equip- ment for this year ' s year ' s EL PADRE. The Gugliosi Photo Co., who gave quality to all the pictures appearing in the EL PARDE. Henry Kirsch, who helped to make this book financially feasible and Dan Haffon for his many ads. Tim Bruckner and Mike Tiberio, for their excellent art work. The Serra High Faculty and Administration for their co-operation and pa- tience with this year ' s El Padre Staff. The advertisers and patrons whose financial assistance made this book possible. Our Moderator, Mr. Doug Reiss, for his constructive criticism and end- less co-operation. The Staff .« i - p n . JUNIPERO SERRA HIGH vs. Cavaliers JUNIPERO SERRA STADIUM FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1967 8:00 P.M. 14th ANNUAL HOMECOMING GAME ST. ANTHONY ' S HIGH Dear Friends of Serra: Serra High School endeavors to develop a harmonious integra- tion of the intellectual, physical and moral capabilities of its students. These qualities do not function separately as can be seen very drama- tically in a sports program which although developing the body also teaches the elements of discipline, team work, mental alertness and accuracy. It requires a grace under pressure to perform well and to represent our school. We know that our Serra coaches have tried to instil l these goals in our Cavalier teams. We welcome you to see the results of their hard work . A football season is a result of many persons - coaches, faculty, the teams, the student body, parents and other loyal supporters. We thank each one for his part in our 1967 season. Sincerely, Brother William Bolts, S.M. Principal PETE LOPEZ Head Coach Athletic Director 2201 W. Tonight looks to be a very special night for our football team and students. This year ' s varsity squad has proven itself well deserving of the tremendous spirit shown at the games. With two Catholic League victories behind them and a hearbreak loss by one point against Mt. Carmel, our team has moved into a tie for second place in the Catholic League with Pius X. (A win tonight would put us in a tie for first place with St. Anthony.) So let ' s all give the team the support they need and have earned. I welcome all the alumni, parents, students and friends of Serra to the greatest Homecoming ever. The New Serra is finally here. Tom Milligan Student Body President FLOWERS COMPLIMENTS OF . . .
