MONSIGNOR PATRICK DIGNAN Superintendent of Schools Archdiocese of Los Angeles i D ' , .4 Reverend Principal In Th Tradition Dear Graduates of 1956: As you graduate from Serra High School you receive the congratulations of many and I want to be among the first to shake your hand. You have completed the course and have completed it well. When you were at Serra you came into contact with the Truths of many centuries and with men who sought to interpret them to you by their lives. These Truths demand an answer in your own lives. Live your lives by these Truths that men everywhere now, and in all the years that God will be pleased to give you, may be better because they saw these Truths in your life. These truths are from God. He speaks them to us each time we go to Holy Mass. We listen to them, we know that they are true and agree to them. We bind ourselves to God in agreement to them, and seal the agreement with the perfect sacrifice of Christ Himself. And God gives Himself to you to begin here now the Union that you are destined to live forever. Live close to the Church, and the memories you are trying to fix in this Annual, far from growing dimmer will become clearer, and deeper, and richer in all your years. God bless you. Though Kenneth Krumtum's name will not be called on graduation day, he will walk many times across the stage in the hearts of his friends. And their bereavement cannot make them forget that while they have merited a diploma, he has won everlasting life. Requiescat in pace. Building tradition Efficiency Through effort. Making Tradition well fits the Student Council of i955-1956, as it set about es- tablishing unprecedented fidelity to its aims as set down in the Student Government Constitution. Under the leadership of Student Body President Ken Batinovich and his fellow officers, concepts new to Serra were introduced for efficiently carrying out the Council's purposes: . . . to co-ordinate student activities, encourage school spirit, and foster co- operation and harmony between the student body and faculty, to develop initiative and leadership, student self-control, character, good citizenship, and a spirit of service to God and others. In Thesbian Traditions In Hero Unsung, a one-act play produced successfully at Immaculate Heart College, the private lives and gripes of those men, who fight, and sweat and die to keep our country free, are laid bare. Vince wouldn't know to die, it would be the waste of a soul, these words mouthed by a tough Marine Chaplain were the turning point in the life of Vince Martell, a cynical Marine sergeant. When his buddy, Zack, goes out on patrol for him in order to save his life, Vince realizes what a waste his life has been. Highlights of the game were a 97-yard touchdown run by Jim Mullen, Dan Was- nik of St. Anthony ran 37 yards for a touchdowng and Bob Easton's long-to-be remembered field goal attempt in the last seconds. St. Anthony was another ot THORNTON'S victims. This time the final score was 6 to 2. Serra knocked the Saints' starting pitching out af the box in the first inning with five runs. From then it was just a matter of how long the game would last. THORNTON struck out 5 while walking 8. Serving in this capacity Coach Strohmeyer put the baseball squad through their paces and came out with a good looking ball team. The team looked good from the opening game, which was Chaminade, who they beat by a score of 6 to 0. Directly following this game Serro's horsehiders learned some bad news. DON SMITH who had come through with 3 hits in the Chaminade game was declared ineligible. This struck a hard blow to the squad but they came through in the rest of the games in good fashion. After losing the first league game to St. Pius X, by the score of 4 to 3, Serra defeated Mt. Carmel 2 to O. MIKE THORNTON pitched a beautiful three-hitter. THORNTON struck out 7 and walked I. He had able backing in the batting department from TOM PAAVOLA, who went I-for-2, JIM ANDREWS and LOU RADISICH, who drove in a run apiece. Against Cathedral THORNTON did not fare so well. He held the Spaoks in tow for five innings, but faltered in the sixth. The score at the end of the fifth stood even at 'I to I, but in the sixth Cathedral broke loose. Serra committed three errors in the game. Top hitting for Serra was done by PAAVOLA, who came through with a double and a RBI, BOB PELFREY, with a triple and a single, and EDDIE DUCAZAU, with a triple. Serra lost by a score of 5 to I. B. J.
