Most of us have had you as a teacher sometime in our senior high career. Many things that we learned in your classes could not have come from any book or anyone but you. You, we feel, have helped us in many ways to become better citizens. ' You are a friend of long standing. We, the Class of 1958, have grown to trust and admire you for what you are. We feel that you are one person who will always be willing to aid us anytime you can. Therefore, it is with much gratitude that we, the Class of 1958, dedicate this, our 1958 Hornet, to you. Marjorie Beatty Class Poem Since our high school days are over, The class of '58 must part. Few leave with cheer and gladnessg Many leave with aching heart. Some weeks seemed long and dreary, Other weeks were shared in fun. Now we think of all the chances And ideas we might have won. But now there's no returning To accept ideas of yesteryear. Memories Walking home Commercial teacher Prophecy As I, Gene Townend, was testing my new jet plane, the Orbit Cruiser, I circled the famous planet Domernik discovered in 1967 by my former classmate, Domer Hamer. Since I had heard that Domer is now king of the planet, and has several 58 classmates working for him, I decided to pay them a visit. I was greeted in the plane yard by the guardman, Bill Oestrich. He took me through a long, narrow hall into a large room where King Hamer sat on his throne of white roses. Head nurse, Judy Laws, was patiently bathing his feet with wine while the assistant nurse, Ruth Reed, was spying on his health with her X-ray glasses. I was about to be presented to the king when Mildred Sollers came dashing through a glass doorway with a tray of colorful medicine. At the far corner of the room, Dorothy Spacht and Patty Henderson were busily translating the message that had just come through the switchboard operated by Lou Rhea Obenour and Dorothy Snyder. Another of the king's secretaries, Barbara Gross, announced over the supersonic microphone that a few of Domer's classmates had a party at Robert Layton's mansion and had decided to visit Domernik. They would arrive soon by a J .V.H.S. airplane piloted by Rodger Miller who was on leave from the United States Air Force. After hearing this message, everyone on Domernik began scurrying around preparing for the reunion. While the general manager, John Hammond, was busy tidying the ballroom, artists Eva Dietz and Mary Peters were designing tunics for the king's two housewives, Donna Miller and Peggy Lightner. Meanwhile, in Phyllis Curry's Beauty Salon, Sarah Daugherty and Mary Hammond were styling Ann Kirk's and Veda Stine's hair for the program to be given for the guests. While all this was going on, Domer's tutor Connie Grove was teaching his twin girls a poem to be read at the performance. Another message had just come over the mike. The message stated that the plane had arrived at George Kling's refueling station and would arrive at Domernik in ten minutes. The plane had just landed in the plane yard, and the guests had all entered. After a brief con- versation with each of them, I found that Joe Foster and Helen Morder were writing a newspaper column, Advice to Young Newlyweds. 'I also found that Joe Carper, Ross Dopp, and Donna Watson are teaching at one of earth's top colleges. lwas surprised to hear that Evelyn Fitzgerald, Alice Metz, and Agnes Secrest are now a famous vocal trio on earth. ' Bob Lightner was busy explaining to the guests the procedures in learning to become a Heavy Equipment Operator, when in walked Richard Kooken. He had missed the plane and had to come in his own space ship. Soon the guests mingled in the ballroom where they heard a band concert directed by Marge Beatty and a choir concert directed by Terry Rupert. Also on the program was Ann Kirk singing the Domernik Rock accompanied by Veda Stine. At the end of the performance, Faye Fouse regretfully announced that several of our classmates could not make the trip. Mary Davis was vacationing in Rome. Janet Taylor was stationed with the Waves in Hawaii. Richard Staylor was busy judging the Miss Universe Pageant. Tom Bilger and Bill Huling were on an assignment in the Atlantic. Kenny Landis was working as a missionary in Alaska. Lois Ewing was in Washington, D.C., working as a hostess at the Burlington Hotel. Beverly Russell, head cook, announced that refreshments were ready to be served. As I was about to take a bite of cake, the alarm clock rang. Oh well, it was certainly nice to see and hear about my classmates once again, even if it was all a dream. Mr. Barkman Senior Class Advisor 1 , mv Y, E 'M President, John Hammondg Vice President, Gene Townendg Secretary, Pat Hendersong Treasurer, Barbara Gross. , it wi ,S mir ,. 'vt' 1-I X W L W E N CLASS HISTORY ln September, 1954, we began our high school careers as Freshmen. Mrs. Farrar and Mr. Sachs acted as our advisors throughout the year. The officers that we elected were: President, Chet McCarty, Vice-President, Dave Allison, Secretary, Peg Lightnerg Trea- surer, Donna Watson. In an effort to raise money for our class treasury, we sold gelatin and pie filling. After a delightful trip to Harrisburg, the State capital, we went to Hershey. Here it was that we saw the museum and the Hershey School. Part of the afternoon was spent in the Hershey Park. The finale of the year came with our promotion exercises, For the first time in the history of Juniata Valley, the Freshman Class held its commencement exercises outdoors. We were now a part of that which had seemed so far away. As Sophomores, we were to begin our sojourn in Senior High. Mr. Zilius and Mr. McElhoes served as our advisors for this, a very important year. Class officers were elected at our first class meeting. They were: President, Dave Allison, Vice-President, Pat Henderson, Secretary, Donna Watson, Treasurer, Connie Grove. During this year, we sold cards and participated in the magazine campaign. Being suc- cessful in these enterprises boosted our morale as well as our treasury. Was it possible to be Juniors? We knew this was going to be a very important year in school, so we went right to work electing the officers who would lead us through this year. They were: President, Dave Allisong Vice-President, Gene Townendg Secretary, Connie Grove Treasurer, Mildred Sollers. Our advisors were Mrs. Hawn and Mrs. Coffman. Under the capable direction of Mrs. Coffman, we presented our play, Too Many Relatives, on March 27 and 28. On April 26, our class went to Gettysburg. There we toured the battlefield. Mr. Stoudt and Mr. Barkman were our guides for this trip. The highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom. This event was held in the Alexandria American Legion Home on May 10, 1957. 'Stairway to the Stars' was the theme. The 'Keystonnaires' provided the music for this social event. Following the all-night Prom, a breakfast was served by some accom- modating mothers. The long awaited day had finally arrived--we were, at last, Seniors. Our final year in high school we knew would be sufficiently important to warrant capable officers. Those who were elected were: President, John Hammond, Vice-President, Gene Townendg Sec- retary, Pat Henderson, Treasurer, Barbara Gross. On November 20, 21, and 22, our class went to Washington, D. C., for a field trip which lasted for three days. Mrs. Hawn and Mr. Barkman were our chaperones. Everyone had a wonderful time, and the memories of this trip will continue to live on. The Senior Play, which was held in the spring, was a highlight of our Senior year. The climax of our high school career will be reached at our Baccalau- reate on June l, Class Night on June 3, and Commencement on June 4. 5 The Class of 1958 Judy Laws, Class Historian Sl mn Acnvnv nutunn MARJORIE ELLEN BEA'I'l'Y: FHA 43 Yearbook staff 43 Buzzer staff 43 Band 4,3,2,l3 Clar- inet quartet 4,3,13 County Band 4,3,2,l3 District Band 3,23 State Band 33 Dance Band 4,3,13 Bottle Band 4,32 Band officer, Librarian 43 Chorus 4,3,2,l3 Daisy Chain 33 Play Prompter 3g Youth Club Council 43 Youth Club Officer 4g Prom Committee 33 Basketball 13 Library Club 13 Magazine Sale Certificate 4,3,2: Emblem, Letter, Sweater THOMAS E.
