Woodin Debbie Yadao Graduation has finally arrived. The past three years have been enough time to collect memories which will stay with us forever. We will remember in the school a time of spirit, of enthusiasm, of boredom, and maybe of troubles. When we entered J-D High as sophomores we were wild and crazy. Even though many traditions were lost this year w'e worked to keep our class spirit high. And we did! We participated in all the assemblies and even won a good share. Our biggest accomplishment was the sophomore talent show which earned more money than any other class had earned in past years. The sophomore class officers-Tani -Church as president, Cathy Engstrom as vice-president, Keslyn Canavan as sccretary treasurer, Kari Kiefer and Heidi Hamilton as representatives worked very hard. The highlight of the year was hosting the Southeast Music Festival. Our second year at J-D High was a lot more comfortable. Junior class officers were Matt Van Patten as president, Keslyn Canavan as vice-president, Bonnie Bowers as secretary treasurer, and Brenda Bowers and Janet Beedle as representatives. During Homecoming week, our great junior hall came in second. Totem queen and J-bird king were Janet Beedle and Paul Pusich w ith their court Shana Ba- ker, Val Cummins, Marcy Duran, Laura Duvernay, Ray Espera, Curt Isaak, Robyn Marriott, and Erika Moser. The junior prom will be remembered ‘always and forever’, the prom theme. Don’t ever forget the junior class musical “West Side Story one of the best musicals put on in Juneau. We were hosts of the boy’s Southeast basketball tournament, the State swim meet, and the State girl’s basketball tour- nament. We got through our final year with a lot of help from Ervan Schultz as president, Margaret Peterson as vice-president, Bonnie Bowers as secretary treasurer, Laura Duvernay and Gail Riederer as representatives. The last week in December was full of excitement. It was Homecoming week and again seniors took first in most things including the Senior hall. Saturday night of Homecoming sawr Nancy Miller and Dick Knapp crowned queen and king. Their court consisted of Janet Beedle, Val Cummins, Laura Duvernay, Ray Espera, Brent Fagerstrom, Lori Lowell, Kris Mercer. Sydney Mitchell, Erika Moser, and Paul Pusich. The outstanding senior play “The Skin of Our Teeth was in the spring instead of November which was a switch. At pep assemblies we were a senior sensation and often won pep assemblies and intramural games. The senior ball held in May will be remembered fondly. This year we hosted a successful Southeast wrestling tournament. We feel our years at J-D High will be remembered for the good times and not the bad. It is time to move on so we the great class of’82 say thanks to all who made these three years some of the best of times. luiljLrrack fl; Gymnastics 10, 11; Cheerle; uvf ert Band 10, 11. Champions State Champions The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears boys' basketball team had a truly great year. With an overall season record of 30-1, the only loss being to Bothol High School of Bothol, Wash., and a 20-0 conference record, the Bears captured the S.E. and State tournaments. For the first time since 1973, the Bears took the State tourna- ment. During the opening round game the team came out with an easy 37 point victory over Eilson. The second game matched Juneau with East, a team the Bears hadn't beat in 3 previous meetings; however, Juneau man- aged to advance with a 6 point overtime victory. In the championship game, the Bears knocked off West for the State crown concluding a great season. Coach Jim Harney has stressed teamwork over the years and this season it paid off. With only four close games this season against East, Ketchi- kan, Metlakatla, and Sitka, the Bears had little trouble with any of their opponents. Juneau-Douglas was definitely the top squad in Alaska throughout the 81-82 year. Ross Ogden goes up for two. 52 Bears celebrate their S.E. victory. Bears take a break during a game. Students came to school on Monday to decorate halls. Each class decorated one floor and they were judged by a group of teachers. Seniors came out victorious. Each day stu- dents dressed to a certain theme ranging from red and black to punk. An assembly was held each day by either a class, the faculty, or the cheerleaders. The annual parade was cancelled due to bad weather, but the floats were displayed upstairs in the gym by the new mural with the Juniors winning. The Homecoming games against Wrangell were held on Friday and Saturday with Juneau the victor of both. The over-all Spirit Key was awarded to the Seniors at the Saturday game. Totem and J-Bird combined for the first time to form a two-hour journalism class in which they produced the first full- year annual and seventeen newspaper issues which came out bi- monthly for Juneau-Douglas High School. After much controversy, the Totem staff, led by Heidi Hamilton, editor-in-chief and Carolyn MacKinnon, co-editor, decided to pro- duce a full-year annual. This gave them later deadlines which enabled them to produce a higher quality yearbook. Also, they had twenty- four more pages to record track, the all-school play, the Senior ball, baccalaureate, and graduation. For the first time in ten years, the J-Bird was published in coopera- tion with the Juneau Empire. Forrest Messerschmidt, editor-in-chief and Kris Mercer, co-editor, headed the J-Bird staff. After it was written and laid down by the J-Bird staff, the paper was printed on the Empire press. J-Bird and Totem also sponsored the Pub-Hop. Their main objective was to establish a better student- teacher relationship. By honoring their birth- days, preparing a special in-service breakfast, and showing all-around respect for them, they accomplished their feat. Other goals they completed with great success were: serving a Legislative breakfast to students from all around Alaska, legislators and other guests; composing a B-book containing all of the students’ names, addresses and phone numbers, school cheers, different school events and other information; painting a mural drawn by Karl Schultz in the gym; purchasing a school stereo; sponsoring the first all day leadership conference in Juneau; selling popcorn; providing pop and candy machines; hosting orientation sessions for ninth graders and sponsoring various concerts throughout the year. Student Council also sent two members to both the fall and spring state-wide leadership confer- ences. Throughout the year. Student Council stuck to their motto to the end: “Coming together is beginning, keeping together is progress, work- ing together is success.” Laura Duvcrnay participates in leadership conference. School spirit was upheld by organiz- ing pep assemblies and leading the classes in cheers. This year the girls raised money to pay for S.E. The organization was formed two years ago by Karen Fox-George to promote an under- standing of business and office procedures in J.D.H.S. OEA sponsored several fund raising projects, such as their annual type-a-thon and the Handsome Harry contest. The money raised by these activities helped pay the way for three club members to attend the OEA State Conference in Anchorage. At the conference, Joel Ferrer, Nan- cy Kollin, and Inta Plume competed and placed in four areas. This qualified them to travel to the National Conference in Nashville Tennesse. Be- sides the special fund raising projects they did. OEA also had its regular projects. OEA has helped many a late student by typing their papers up for a small fee. The club was co-advised by Mike and Mary Herold. DECA this year took part in the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon, the cancer telethon, and the Lions Club Interna- tional Food Fair. They also donated money to the Big Broth- ers, Big Sisters of Juneau. In the high school DECA raised money for itself by operat- ing the student store, Mac’s Cache.
