Origin Of The Trojan On May 12, 1969, the Juneau Chiefs and Reese ville Cardinals athletic departments were combined by school board action. Through the ensuing months that followed, school colors had to be chosen; school name or nickname had to be picked; and a school song had to be selected by the student bodies. The school colors chosen were puxple and white; the school song selected by the student body was Go U Northwestern ; and the nick- name selected for the athletic teams was the Trojans. Combining the athletic departments from both schools has created more competition for starting positions, given more boys an opportu- nity to participate in different sports on teams of their own caliber, and made the athletic squads from both schools much stronger. The Trojans will be a part of a new conference during 1970-71 and will add a new sport called cross country. The first Trojan football team took the field on September 5 at Poynette and battled to a 6-6 tie. Football was the first segment of the athletic program, and it was a great success. Beaten only once, the Trojans showed team unity, spirit, dedication, and personal sacrifice which are basic characteristics for any sound athletic team. Looking ahead to the winter sports, the same characteristics are very evident. The desire to do their best and be the best is the TROJAN trademark. 14
