Text from Pages 1 - 76 of the 1970 volume:

In Memoriam And Dedication MR. MYRON D. SAUGSTAD God made man to love, to care, to trust, to believe, to teach, and to respect his fellow man. One of these men was Mr. Saugstad. He was a man who loved and cared for his people no matter who they were; boys he coached, students he taught, teachers he worked with, or friends he worked and lived with. His faith in the ability of others was his greatest asset. He firmly believed that when given a chance, a person can succeed; and he fought to give each one he knew that chance. He respected those he knew whether he agreed with them or not and because of this he received, in return, the respect he rightly deserved. As a teacher at Juneau High School for 12 years, it is with humble gratitude and appreciation of his dedicated work to further our education that the Jay Staff, and more particularly the Juneau High School student body, wishes to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Myron Saugstad. The Gathering Of The Clan It is the atm of JUNEAli V BSCHOOL to cultivate in the minds and hearts of its students the strength of CHtfJj TER, quality of SCHOLARSHIP, ability of LEADER- SHIP,'and the desire for service, which will prepare them for fufyr endeavors be- yond their high school years. The 1970 JAY illustrates these opportunities, each of which contributes to the desired ends of a high school education. Diversity is the name of the game--and Mr. George Knuckles is a man well diversified. His ed- ucational background stems from high school graduation in Red Bird, Kentucky. He then received his teaching degree at Baylor Univer- sity in Texas. Going back to Kentucky, Mr. Knuckles taught at Red Bird and then moved to Illinois to teach at Evergreen Park, Chicago. Coming to Wisconsin, he obtained his Mas- ters Degree in educational admin- istration from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Mr. Knuckles previously served as the district's Assistant Superin- tendent. The trials of patience, skill, and overall dexterity are con- stantly being tested, and our Super- intendent is successfully meeting this great challenge. 6 Superintendent: MR. GEORGE KNUCKLES A Better Education Principal: MR. NORMAN DAHL There is much color, excitement, overall havoc amid the ceaseless activities and duties of our high school principal. But, above all this is the sparkle of satisfaction in knowing that it has been achieved through personal sacrifice. Mr. Dahl was a high school graduate of Shell Lake, Wisconsin. From there his education ex- bounded to a Bachelor of Science degree from Eau Claire University, a Masters degree in mathematics from Buffalo University in New York, and a Masters degree in education from the University of Wisconsin. Prior to his coming to Juneau, he taught at Stone Lake and Ladysmith schools. Beyond his invaluable service to our school, Mr. Dahl has been elected President of the Board of Control of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Ath- letic Association. MRS. BETTY BRIEMAN English I 1 MRS. Origin Of The Trojan On May 12, 1969, the Juneau Chiefs and Reese ville Cardinals athletic departments were combined by school board action. Through the ensuing months that followed, school colors had to be chosen; school name or nickname had to be picked; and a school song had to be selected by the student bodies. The school colors chosen were puxple and white; the school song selected by the student body was Go U Northwestern ; and the nick- name selected for the athletic teams was the Trojans. Combining the athletic departments from both schools has created more competition for starting positions, given more boys an opportu- nity to participate in different sports on teams of their own caliber, and made the athletic squads from both schools much stronger. The Trojans will be a part of a new conference during 1970-71 and will add a new sport called cross country. The first Trojan football team took the field on September 5 at Poynette and battled to a 6-6 tie. Football was the first segment of the athletic program, and it was a great success. Beaten only once, the Trojans showed team unity, spirit, dedication, and personal sacrifice which are basic characteristics for any sound athletic team. Looking ahead to the winter sports, the same characteristics are very evident. The desire to do their best and be the best is the TROJAN trademark. 14 One Short Fellows FRONT ROW: C. Trojans Start Year Off Right It was a great year for the Trojan gridders. The season began with a tough game with Poynette that ended in a tie. Then a string of five consecutive wins set the stage for homecoming with the Deerfield Demonds for first place in the Eastern Suburban Conference. The Tro- jans stumbled before a huge crowd on a very rainy evening 16-12. Undaunted by the defeat at home- coming, the Trojans closed the season with wins for a 6-1-1 record. Highlights included Poynette scoring a touchdown against the defense on the first play from scrimmage and the Tro- jans then beginning a string of 183 consecutive minutes before another team scored. The Trojans were the best offen- sive and defensive team in the confer- ence scoring 199 points while giving up only 36. Seniors had a ball the last game beating Marshall 56-0! Mark Schaefer flipped 12 TD passes and R. Uttech was the leading scorer with 38 points. The team selected Mike Stock as Most Valuable Player and Mike and Tim Bandle as honorary captains. Three sen- iors were selected to the offensive and defensive teams for All-Conference. Rex Couperus and Mike Stock were both selected on offense and defense while Rick Uttech was awarded honors on of- fense only. Mike was selected for the second straight year on All-Conf. 15 But We Know We’re 1 FRONT ROW: J. Raabe, S. Kranz, J. Lauersdorf, D. Ninmann, ]. Caine. MIDDLE ROW: R. Uttech, C. Mink, G. Kohn, R. This year's Junior Varsity team had a very satisfying season compiling a 4-3 rec- ord. The JV's consisted only of freshman and sophomore boys. Learning the basic fundamentals from first year coach, Mr. Kiesow, the squad prepared themselves for next year's varsity or junior varsity squad. Many boys will be fighting for positions on the Varsity next season and with the desire and determination that was evident during the past season, the Trojans should have a winning season once again in the new Flyway Conference. 17 Homecoming ’69 Queen Debbie and King Tim Reigned by Queen Julie and King Mike Homecoming was unique this year. Festivities ranged from the parade of eight L-RHS and JHS class floats, an inspiring pep rally, captivating bonfire, and decisive game to the high-lighting dance. The Trojan spirit reigned su- preme throughout the spectacular I tomecoming week. 19 We're winning, can't you tell? -Ah—a 50 yard touchdown. Savoring a victory. Got ya! Ship ahoy trojans. Nell, O. Braunschweig, J. Hemmy, J. Hagelberg, R. Uttech, R. Duessler, Mgr. This year's Trojan basketball team has compiled many great things. The team started out the season under new head coach, Mr. Krentz. Coach Krentz had seven returning lettermen to form the nucleus for his ball club. There were a great number of boys trying out for the team. Coach Krentz had to cut his squad to 14 boys including seven seniors, six juniors and one sophomore. The roundballers have a record to date of 8 wins and two defeates. Losing only one conference game, the Trojans are tied for first place and are anxiously awaiting the showdown with Deerfield later this winter. The Trojans goal: Sole possession of first place our last year in the Eastern Suburban Conference. J. Matthews, C. Aloi, R. Richards, K. Pocius, J. Uttech, D. Rohde, K. Gunther, T. jaeck, R. Uttech, B. Kant, J. Burdick, M. Nehls, J. Ninmann, Mgr. The junior varsity, under Coach Kiesow, had a very disappointing season. Despite the fact that many of their games went right down to the final gun, victories were very few for the Trojans. One promising aspect is the number of freshman boys who participated on the team. With more experience, these boys on the jayvee squad will become valuable additions for othei Trojan basketball squads in the future. FRONT ROW: J. Kaeding, K. Richards. BACK ROW: A. Jongebloed, S. The Trojan wrestling team, led by returning lettermen Bill Dahl, Paul Henkel, Bill Scott, Terry Cose, Joe Bronner and Jim Walsh, was hampered by early season injuries and inexperience. Under the direction of new coach, Mr. Curtis, many new boys participated in wrestling for the first time. Although the number of wins does not indicate the true caliber of the boys, wrestling steadily improved during the course of the season. With only one senior on the squad, Terry Cose, the team will be looking forward to better things next year. Petry applying half-nelson toward a pin. They sponsored a candy sale and a pinata sale to raise money for their annual Spanish style dinner. The French Club sponsored a dance in order to raise money for their annual French dinner. Singing at the Christmas party and attending a French ballet in spring highlighted this Clubfs activity. FRONT ROW: B. Buschkopf, M. Scherer, M. Peters, T. Langan, B. Grosenick, J. Hemmy, T. Debate Club Developing proper debate skills was a trying task for this group of students. Many hours were required in preparation for tournaments. The rewards gained were both of knowl- edge and experience.
