The first important duty of the class was to elect its various officers. They were: President, S. Westimayer; Vice-President, M. Cox; Secretary, R. Nehls; Treasurer, M. Hemmy. A big project for the freshmen was making a float for the Homecoming parade. After many hours of hard work, the completed float received third prize. A fund-raising activity of their class was the sponsoring of the social hours held after the basketball games. They also held a bundle drive to collect clothes for needy children. In the spring freshmen were busy making plans for the summer and next year's classes. FRONT ROW: B. Gerds, C. Hoeppner, M. Hemmy, R. Affeld, E. Maaske, T. Kant, R. Braman, J. Kaul, K. Schaefer, G. Juneau's football team enjoyed a very prosperous season this past year. The team showed a very marked improvement over previous years. Our team posted a 4-4 record after not winning a game for several years. The fans also turned out to support their team, both at home and as they journeyed to their opponent's gridirons. To help the team improve their playing, movie films were taken of three home games. The team elected Tom Triller cap- tain of the 1961 squad. Advanced algebra for- merly taken by correspond- ence, is now taught by Mr. Dahl to those students who need four years of mathe- matics for college entrance. French, taught by Mrs. Kielsmeier, and Spanish, taught by Mrs. Riegel, have also been added to widen the field of foreign language for the students. These subjects could only be taken by correspondence, as Latin and 2nd and 3rd year German are now. First year German, taught by Mr. Emanuel, has been offered to the students for several years. Taking a deep breath, on Sept. 5, 1961, 51 sophomores, 19 girls and 32 boys, knew this was an important year. First the sophomores had a welcome party for the freshmen. Later a return party was given to the sophomores by the freshmen. Soon Homecoming came and the decorating of the gym was up to the sophomores. After many long hours of work, the sophomores succeeded in creating an enchanting gym with Stardust as their theme. Biology and world history took many hours of study and preparation throughout the year. As summer approached, the class looked forward to a time of fun and the start of another adventurous year at J. On September 5, 1961, the junior class started their third year of high school with the addition of two new students, Sharon Jump and Roberta Lloyd. There are now 58 members in our class. Last year during the annual election the students chose their class officers. They are treasurer, M. Matthews; vice president, S. Schlueter; secretary, J. Schumacher; president, D. Haertel. The junior class did a very fine job decorating their homecoming float. They took first place in floats and also in window decorations. A short time after school started the students selected their class rings. They waited anxiously for the day when they would come. Many juniors participated in the Junior Merit Scholarship exams. The class did not do as well as expected in their annual magazine campaign, however they accumulated enough money for their Prom. As the year came to a close, they enjoyed working together to make the Prom a success. FRONT ROW: M. Gubin, T. Couperus, T. Schultz, E. Krause, T. Roemer, K. Gemetzke, D. Schultz, L. Maas, C. This was done because the Staff voted unanimously for this change. The Jay Staff this year was composed of thirteen members who worked together conscientiously to bring you the 1962 Jay. Two of the members joined after the picture was taken. These were the Freshmen, Diane Klages and Shelby Heinzelman. This was the first year that there have been Freshmen working on the Jay Staff, and these girls are to be congratulated. The Jay Staff would like to encourage more Freshmen to join in future years. 18 Boofea, Booka, FRONT ROW: S. Christian, President; B. Maertz, J. Lipka, Vice-President; J. Tillema, S. Fashun. TO OUR SENIORS: Choosing parting words for Seniors is always a challenging and difficult task. The author of this favorite of mine re- mains anonymous: There's no free gate to anything worthwhile.... Not to skill nor health, nor to success nor friendship, nor even to the lasting love and respect of those who are nearest and dearest to us... These are the items that make up the best income that any human being can have, and the sum of that income will be measured by the sum of what we are willing to pay to get it. May your J.H.S. experiences stand you in good stead as you depart our halls to face the challenges of a dynamic society. No more will the seniors pass through these doors as students. High school is now a book of memories. 47
