We chose Latin because it is a universal lan- guage. a language of culture and learning, and to introduce a unique title for your year- book. This year’s title is most appropriate because of the several meanings associated with the Latin word Aquila: (1) an Eagle; (2) a constellation with a guiding star: and (3) a standard (in our case—the standard of Pride and Excellence) NOTE: Key for identification for pages 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 15 may be found on page 17. PRIDE IN EACH OTHER. . . We took special pride in our friendship; we stuck together through difficult times, and rejoiced through the good. We made each other feel needed at JHSyesterday, today, tomorrow, and always. UPPER RIGHT Mark had trouble explaining the difference between a piston and a spark plug to Brenda. LOWER LEFT: Rachel and Victor compared letter jackets. LOWER RIGHT: Kim Hardesty shared ideas with friends. 4 PRIDE IN OURSELVES. . . To take pride in anything you do, you have to take pride in yourself. We had pride in what we stood for. ABOVE: Did he really write this to me? asked Vickie Men chaca. UPPER LEFT: Danny Smith debated on what to do next. LOWER LEFT: Linda Guana took pride in her appearance. 5 We are individuals, yet we make one. In work and play we help each other along, experiencing highs and lows, taking each day as it comes. Reaching for the goals that we want, striving for the dreams we hope to obtain. This is pride, loving, caring, sharing. Taking care of our school, sharing our knowledge, and loving our fellow classmates, our teachers, and our school. PRIDE IN ACTIVITIES. . . We participated in many activities. We had pride because we knew that ‘ We Were The Champions!’ UPPER LEFT: Someone had too many activities. UPPER RIGHT: Preston May readied the photography gear. LOWER LEFT: Theresa and Brenda did a skit for the Gong Show. LOWER RIGHT: The Cheerleaders inspected the trophies (most of which JHS won) at the track meet. PRIDE IN ACTIVITIES. . . But we still had time to play. And we played hard and clean both at home and away. UPPER LEFT: ‘Guess who?’ asked Laurrie as Bobbi Lynn hopefully said, 'Sylvester Stallone!' UPPER RIGHT: Belinda and Machete demonstrated how to say NO' the hard way. LOWER LEFT: Mark helped Theresa practice her bal- ancing act. LOWER RIGHT: Rocky and Janna demonstrated a new ‘bump’; sitting down! Pride is defined as being proud of something. We carry it much further than that; we respond to what is going on, we take part in the happenings around us. We care, we love, we ARE proud! PRIDE IN OUR ACTIONS. . . To be accountable for the things you do, you have to make sure they are the right things. . . We look sharp, we think sharp, we act sharp. We have pride in whatever we do. H I S'tocu JuMC7T OA PftNb UPPER LEFT: One of the signs in the hall complimenting the UPPER CENTER: Judy rushed to be on time. UPPER RIGHT: band for Sweepstakes. LOWER LEFT: Vivian Robles slaved over Katie primped a little before class to make sure she looked her mug shots. LOWER RIGHT: Kim went all out in the dash. best. PRIDE IN OUR KNOWLEDGE. . . We took the time to learn, and used what we learned. Using our knowledge to the best of our ability, we feel we can obtain our highest goals. UPPER RIGHT: Yolanda Lombrano working on a typing deadline. ABOVE: Teresa, Vickie, Melody, and Royce joined the rest of the class in paying close attention. UPPER LEFT: Rocky Daniel and Trini Gonzales were completely absorbed. River boundaries change. Towns change. So do we. . . Just as slowly But just as surely. PRIDE IN OUR SCHOOL. . . Making repairs, painting and cleaning were some of the ways we showed how we felt about JHS. 16 UPPER LEFT: LaDell Abilez helped in making the school room brighter. UPPER RIGHT and ABOVE: Dana, Machele, Sherri, Randy and Red all worked on making the school grounds cleaner. FACULTY AND ADMIN1STRA TION Kfc 5 Two of the lesser publicized administra- tive positions that are very important to our school are those of Business Manager and Tax Assessor-Collector. Here at JHS these two positions are held by just one person, Preston Joy. His job is to appraise and value personal and real property in our district, establish ownership, prepare tax notices and collect taxes. Tax money that is collected is used in two ways. A portion of it is used to retire school bonds that were sold in 1962. The greater portion goes directly to the school to pay for goods and services for which we do not receive funding from the state. Like the Federal Minimum Wage Act which established a floor for salaries, the State of Texas has established the Mini- mum Foundation Act which grants monies to all accredited schools to pay minimum salaries and operating expenses. All districts are also assessed and must pay a specific amount as their share. This year the amount we contributed was $121,487. Married to Vera Beth Wade and the father of Cash, Mr. Joy (right) has been an employee of the JISD for 2 years. In terms of seniority in the Business Office, Janet Allsup (below) takes, the hon- ors. She has been bookkeeper for the last 6 years. Also assisting in the downtown office is Mrs. John Lockett. 18 The top administrative position in our school is held by Superintendent Billie C. Earles. Mr. Earles is responsible for carrying out the directions of the Board of Trustees. He is charged with the administration of all instructional and non- instructional programs in our district. Married to Ardith Anne, they are the parents of Eddie, Cindy, and Maggie. The former Director of Pupil Personnel Services, Research, Planning and Special Programs at Abilene ISD, Mr. Earles received his B.B.A. from North Texas State, his Master’s degree from Hardin-Simmons and has continued his post graduate education with the Uni- versity of Texas and Hardin-Simmons. A relative newcomer this year. Principal Joe Rob- inson took over the reins of running the high school from Jack Hoggett who had been filling in after Mr. J. R. Dillard's resignation on November 8, 1977. In charge of curriculum, Mr. Robinson has been successful in arranging for many elective courses for the 1978-79 school year. He has been instru- mental in welding both the faculty and student body together to help make this a year in which we can truly take pride. Mr. Robinson has been involved many, many hours each week in counseling both students and teachers. Of course, the occasional discipline prob- lem does come to his office and he has been involved in discipline. Coming to JHS after the first quarter, Mr. Robin- son found himself immediately involved in the Self- Study Program mandated by the Texas Education Agency. In addition to this, as custodian of text- books, Mr. Robinson also inherited another time- consuming task. Sharing his technical knowledge with the Journal- ism and Yearbook staffs, Mr. Robinson was both a stimulus and a well-spring of information. Married to Joy, they are the parents of Jane, a 4th grader. Mr. Robinson came here from Bammel Mid- dle School near Houston. His B.S. and Master's degrees are from Stephen F. Austin State. He has completed 30 hours toward his doctorate at the Uni- versity of Houston. GLORIA ABILEZ Clerical Aide JOYCE ALEXANDER Fourth Grade ROSE ATCHISON Special Ed. EMORY BARRON Voc. Ag., H.S. In the summer the Varsity attended a cheerleading camp at Tarleton College in Stephenville, winning two excellence ribbons, two blue superior ribbons, and one Super Star Squad ribbon, and the Spirit Stick. The JV attended camp at Schreiner in Kerrville. During the football boys' spring training they took them refreshments each day. They had pep-rallies before each football game to get us in the spirit. Each week the girls would decorate the boys' lockers with candy and favors. Along with yelling at the football games, they yelled at basketball games and helped out at the Junction track meet. 104 Student Council Many of us don’t know it, but, the trophy case in the gym is provided by the Stu- dent Council. The purpose of this group is for the bet- terment of the student body. Everyone who saw the movie The Pit and the Pendulum” in the audito- rium on April 10 will remember it a long time. The horror movie was pre- sented by the Student Council as a fund raising project to send the officers to the State Convention in Ft. Worth. The Student Council Officers are elected by the student body. Actually, the Student Council serves as leader ship training. Another pur- pose is to provide commu- nication between the stu- dents and faculty, and the faculty and students. The Student Council is composed of the four class presidents in addition to three council representa- tives elected by each class. Sponsor for this school year is Hugh Doyai. Putting it all together was Mrs. Joyce Dunk. At the District Meet on April 6, Junction shared the honor of Co-Champion with Reagan County. Isidro Ramirez captured the honor of best actor, Donna Griffith was named to the All-Star Cast, and Chip Johnson was named to the Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. Junior Play Distributive Education Clubs of America DECA is an organization to find jobs for students who wish to work for credit. Among their activities were a banquet, fruit sales, bake sales. They attended an area meet in San Angelo on February 3- 4, with several winners coming out. One of the most outstanding members of DECA was Isidro Ramirez. He won 1st place in general merchandising at the Area and State Meets. State was held on March 9. He advanced to the nationals on May 7-12. We've grown with each other, we've played with each other, lied and cheated and hated each other, but we still loved each other. You know, its kind of hard to belive that we’ve spent Vs of our lives in school and in one month from now. some of us won 7 see each f other for the rest of our lives. We’ll have only memories. Memories of Katy’s giggle, David's jokes, friendships we’ve acquired from year to year. We 'II have only memories of being able to walk up to school and jaw with the gang. Yes. we’ll even miss our teachers. Everyone from Miss Aussie to Mrs. Hinds. To these people who have shaped us and molded us into what we are tonight, we give thanks. Tonight, iif are the Senior Class of 1978. We're like a bunch of sheep that have been corralled, marked and drenched and tonight it’s time for us to ( be let out of the pens. Whether we’ll be corralled again, bought, sold to be this winter’s jacket or maybe we’ll just graze awhile, but nevertheless, we’ll be dif- 1 ferent than what we've been for the past 12 years. So, all in all, thanks for watching us these past 12 years. Hang in there. Lord, cause we’ve a long way to go. A men. —Cash Jetton President. We have reached a stage in our lives where we must make our own decisions about the morals and values we wish to preserve from our childhood. Graduation not only means receiving a diploma and finishing twelve years of school, but it is also, in essence, a symbolic cutting of the apron strings and has been a longtime tradition . . . A friend told me about an old Beatles song, in which a majority of the lyrics are Goodbye. Good- bye. Hello, Hello. And so tonight we say Goodbye’ to Junction High School and our childhood. And as we say ‘Goodbye.’ we also say Hello, world; Hello, life: Hello, future. Again, we say thank you and God Bless. —Theresa Blum Saluialorian. We all have an emergency supply of adrenalin that lets us run that ‘second mile' when many other runners don’t complete the first mile. Two students have gone that ‘second mile’ at JHS during 1978—Isidro Ramirez and Pam Walker. Aside from the benefits of physical exercise youngsters learn to follow direc- tions, accept constructive criti- cism, and learn the importance of cooperation. Seventh and Eighth graders develop pride in their accom- plishments and pride in their school and community. We realize that we owe a great deal to our sponsors not because they have sup- ported the yearbook but because they have supported our school each year. In addition to paying taxes, they have supported our band, our athletic pro- grams, our publications, and our activities in many ways. Our sponsors have simply made Junction a nice place to live! Bringing the school and community together is, perhaps, a function of the Pecan Festival and the Miss Kimble County contest. The Queen of the Pecan Festival this year (lower left) is Miss Michelle McElhaney shown with runners up Theresa Blum and Robin Wright. Robin was picked to be Miss Kimble County (upper left). Both Michelle and Robin are on call to help our sponsors and to represent our community throughout the state. 159 2031 North Main Junction, Texas 76849 GOOD VIBRATIONS RECORD SHOP 446-3541 Congratulations Seniors! BEHIND THE SCENES MARGARET BATES FRANCES BILLO LORENE BRUNS MERLE BUNDICK SHIRLEY GENTRY SUE MURRAY Manager BONNIE SMITH ADA ST. CLAIR SUE WILLIAMS In thinking about this last school year it is easy to recall our favorite teachers and even those that weren’t among our favorites. And we'll never forget those in our class or even those above us and below us. too. But there is a group of dedicated individuals that work behind the scenes to keep our school tick- ing. Without these individuals JHS would not have been so pleasant a place to attend. Of course we’re referring to those wonderful ladies who spend many long hours in the cafeteria prepar- ing breakfasts and lunches and when we had special banquets helping out with those also. It’s human nature, we guess, to complain about the quality of food in cafeterias but those of us that have had cafe- teria food in other schools know that this one is tops. Rarely do we realize the amount of different tasks we place on the custodians. But they, too, work long hours keeping our school safe, comfortable, and really, quite attractive, considering the budget within which they must operate, and the time they have to perform their job. Another group we tend to overlook is the J1SD bus drivers. They get up very early, some of the routes are very long, and usually one half of that ride is a soli- tary ride. They have to pick us up. endure our yelling and fussing, and get us safely home. We’re sure you agree they deserve a lot more recognition than they get. And there is still another group that rarely comes in for recognition and that is our parents. They get us ready for school, they encourage us, they share in our triumphs, heal our wounds, give us encouragement when we’re down in the dumps, assist us in a multi- tude of ways, sponsor our trips, and contribute to all kinds of fund raising activities. Sometimes, many times, in fact, most of the time we take them for granted. To all of these groups we salute you. We thank you for your support and for having made this truly one heck of a good year. 205 HIGH SCHOOL INDEX A AARON, Audrey 34, 109 ABILEZ, Freddy 39, 40, 77 ABILEZ, LaDelle 16, 34, 92, 98 ADAMS, Allen 26, 27, 28, 66, 68, 85, 93, 114 ADAMS, Kim 45, 46, 67, 76, 81, 100, 101, 104 ADAMS, Scott 46, 69, 72, 77, 78, 94, 95 AGUILAR, Jerry 69 AKERS, Ken 40, 42, 69, 77, 92, 99, 100 ALEXANDER, Ann 10, 46, 92, 100 ANDREWS, Terry 34, 72, 89, 90, 92, 93 ARANGO, Carlos 40 ATKINS, Bonnie 40 B BANNOWSKY, Belinda 9, 40, 44 76 104 169 BANNOWSKY,'Carolyn 40, 76, 81.92, 97, 100 BARBOZA, Andy 46, 69 BARRON, Leon 34, 109 BAUGH, David 10, 28, 66, 68, 77, 114 BEAM, Joe 6, 28, 109, 114 BEEBE, Doug 34, 66, 79, 87, 93 BERRY, Karl 40, 100, 101 BERRY, Kent 33, 34, 100, 101, 103, 108 BEYER, Bobby 47 BIDDLE, Kevin 46, 89, 90, 92, 100 BIVINS, Becky 46, 95 BIVINS, Bill 35, 36, 95 BLACKBURN, Paul 46, 72, 94 BLUM, Theresa 8, 9, 27, 28, 31, 65, 67, 73, 92, 100, 103, 107, 114, 115, 158 BOLT, Danny 29, 94, 114 BOONE, Joe 40, 69, 84 BOONE, Juan 45, 46, 69, 72, 77, 85, 104 BOUMAN, Brenda 4, 8, 26, 28, 31.92, 100, 103, 114, 184 BOUMAN, Missy 46, 81, 100, 184 BOWERS, Denese 34, 73, 84 BROCK, Lori 40, 43, 73, 157, 158 BROWN, Debra 40, 86, 92, 100 BROWN, Steve 46, 127 BROYLES, Royce 13, 40, 92, 100, 103 BROYLES, Ward 46, 63, 72, 92, 100 BRUCE, Sammie 26, 33, 34, 60, 92 98 100 BUNDICK, Darrell 34, 66, 77, 93 BUNDICK, Elizabeth 34, 109 BUNDICK, Gary 34, 37, 69, 109 BUNDICK, Leslie 46, 95, 127 BURLESON, Jeff 40, 93 BURLESON, Todd 46, 69 BURNS, Tina 36 BYNUM, Todd 40, 69, 77, 173 c CARLILE, RODGER 46, 95 CARPENTER, Deanna 44, 46, 89 90 99 CARTER,' Holly 40, 84 CARTER, Jamie 34 CASHMAN, John 40, 61, 99, 157 CASTILLO, Mark 46, 69, 77 CASTILLO, Rudy 34, 66, 68, 77, 78, 79 CAVANESS, Geanan 40, 43, 73, 85, 96, 99, 100, 157 CHAVARRIA, Steve 40 CHENAULT, Bobby 28, 34, 47, 57 94 114 CHENAULT, Jeana 40, 41,62, 73,81,82, 97, 100, 104, 106 COFFEY, Mike 28, 32, 70, 89, 92, 107, 114 COFFEY, Susan 46, 76 CONDARCO, Osvaldo 46 COUEY, Dana 15, 16, 39, 40, 65, 73, 159 CRAIG, Dwayne 46, 92, 100 CRITES, Curtus 39, 40, 44, 89, 90, 100, 109, 157, 201 CURRY, John 40, 69, 94, 99, 100 CURTIS, Marcy 34, 92, 97, 98, 100, 159 D DAHARSH, Mark 46, 95 DALE, Danny 29, 70, 73, 89, 109, 114, 115 DALE, Robby 46, 72, 92, 100 DANIEL, Rocky 13, 40, 66, 72 DAVIS, Billy 28, 93, 114 206 DAVIS, Bobbi Lynn 9, 39, 40, 41,65,67, 73,81,82, 100, 101, 158 DAVIS, Jim 32, 36, 66, 68, 69, 71,88, 95 DAVIS, Mitch 45, 67, 69, 72, 77, 94, 127 DAYTON, Christy 34, 89, 90, 92, 100, 101, 159 DEL BOSQUE, Noemi 47 DEL BOSQUE, Nora 34 DEL BOSQUE, Norma 28, 114 DE LOS SANTOS, Ricky 46 DOMINGUEZ, Bobby 28, 30, 114 DOMINGUEZ, Jesse 15, 46, 60 D’SPAIN, Todd 40, 94 DUNLAP, David 36, 94 DUNLAP, John Paul 46, 95, 127 E EIDSON, Kristyl 40, 42, 65, 73, 74, 80,81,92, 99, 100, 101, 158 EPPLER, Jim 40, 94 ESPINOSA, Jannette 32, 34, 37, 109 F FIKES, Perry 32, 34, 94 FLANAGAN, Teresa 28, 114 FLORES, Elias 46 FLORES, Raul 34, 109 FREEMAN, Terry 26, 28, 30, 32, 77, 92, 114 FURR, Judy 46 FURR, Kathy 46 G GARDNER, Gary 34, 66, 67, 68, 83, 85 GAUNA, Linda 15, 34 GAUNA, Margaret 40 GOLD, Gary 34, 100, 101, 103, 108 GOLD, Larry 28 GONZALES, Arnie 40, 69, 77 GONZALES, Danny 46 GONZALES, Gilbert 34, 59, 66, 68, 88, 106 GONZALES, Irma 46, 100 GONZALES, Luz 46, 99 GONZALES, Rachel 4, 40, 100 GONZALES, Raymond 40, 69, 77 GONZALES, Trini 13, 46, 69, 70, 85, 87, 100, 101 GOODMAN, Kelly 40, 69, 72 GRIFFIN, Red 16, 40, 69 The Teen Board is a quasi-school organi- zation that sponsors dances and non- school activities.
