MURR, a member of the Junction School District Board of Trustees since 1964, died at Kimble Hospital of a heart attack May 16, 1970. A lifetime resident of Kimble County, Mr. Murr, a rancher, industrialist and civic leader, had “progress for all” in his mind in all of his endeavors. He was vice-president of the school board at the time of his death. WARRANT OFFICER ROGER B. BAXTER, 25, a Co- bra Helicopter pilot with the Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, was killed in action in Vietnam May 6, 1970. A 1964 graduate of Junction High School, WO Baxter attended business college in Austin before serving four years in the U.S. Air Force. He entered the Army a year ago. Full military services were held in Junction on May 25, 1970. ARMY WARRANT OFFICER ROGER BAXTER Born 1945; Died 1970 In Vietnam Dedication Billy Ed Allen Maurice Nethery Billy Ed Allen, immediate past president of the Board, has served the school district 10 years and will make it 11 this next year. He was presi- dent of the Board from 1966 through 1969. Allen also is a rancher and participates in many civic activities. His wife, Edith, and their three sons allow him some time to participate in his favorite hobby, “just sittin’ and whittling.” Maurice Nethery, newly elected president of the Junction Independent School Board, has served on the board 15 years and has held the presidency at different intervals six years prior to this last spring election. Nethery, sometimes called an “airplane enthusiast”, recently was promoted to Lt. Col. in the Army Air Force Re- serves. Besides ranching for a living, helping his wife, Betty, rear three young sons, Nethery logs a lot of plane miles at the Junction Airport, “just to keep in practice.” Foreword Molly Murr—Nancy McMillan—Martha Ferguson We, the members of the annual staff, publish the 1970 Golden Eagle to relate, in picture and copy form, some of the outstanding and interesting events of the school year. JHS cannot be described in a single word except—VARIETY. Both the big and little fit together to fill the year. New and old faces, locker doors, teachers, homework, western dances, mid-term tests, ban- quets, athletic tournaments, the Student Council, English novels, hayrides and picnics, old jokes, tears, chalky blackboards, organization meetings, and the flagpole are among the traditional things that rep- resent our school. Students laugh through the easy times and struggle through the hard times. There was the pain of defeat and the thrill of victory. In all the phases of the scholastic and extracurricular activities, this is our school. Sincerely, Molly Murr, Editor Nancy McMillan, Associate Ed. Martha Ferguson, Business Mgr. • • • JHS Is... They are preparing for a future with the A-string and they real- ly have a good start! Their coach. Bill Preston, has used all his talents to aid his team and they developed well under his direction. Although the team missed many workouts and their pre-season scrimmages with the Llano Yellowjackets, they managed to put their heads together and took a 28-7 victory over the Ozona Lions. In this pic- ture, Jimmy Bankston (35) breaks by an Ozona defender for a large gain. Eagles Overpower Mountaineers Tim Gilliam (81) intercepts a pass during the Junction-Santa Anna game. This was just one of many passes Tim intercepted during his senior year to spark the Eagles to a 9-1 season record.
