Edited By The Yearbook Staff of Junction High School Theme Features are a LACKEY-NEAL Production under the direction of LACKEY PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO and the editors and management of this book. Photography: Portraits by Newsfoto Publishing Company All other Photography by Jerry F. Lackey This is a Newsfoto Publication Foreword . . . From the time the first satellite began circling the globe in the darkness of space till the first rocket lights the path to the moon, is the journey you and I have traveled together the past school year. This year's staff members have spent many hours of labor, sweat, joy and sometimes tears to produce this unusual book. Studying the universe from nearly every angle of the galaxy we feel that we have come up with not only modern history but a good prophecy of the future. Although I have seen most of the past four years' school activities through the viewfinder of a camera, I can still say they have been pleasant ones. I have received high honors and privileges by w a y o f my camera which I feel would have been impossible without the guidance and push of my teachers and friends. Speaking for the entire senior class, we bid each of our lower classmen farewell and hope that what you receive in Junction High School will seem as val- uable to you as it does to us. Within the following pages, you will find the e- vents of this near-past school year recorded in the best way we know how to bring them to you in picture form. I personally hope you like what you see. Sincerely yours, Jerry F. Lackey EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Theme • • has made a rapid improvement in the last fifty years. The road traveled by the stagecoach was a rough one. It wasn't long, however, until the automobile took its place. As science began to advance, the airplane came into being, and now we are faced with not only the luxury of this advancement but the unknown fu- ture that lies ahead. The advances today have gone past gravity, and the road that lies before us in yonder darkness will be rougher than any that lay just around the bend for the stagecoach. Concerned with the world we live in today and having a vital interest in what lies ahead of us in the future, the editors, staff and management of this book chose as a our theme, THE AGE OF SPACE. Throughout the succeeding pages you will find photographs and other means of space creation produced especially for this book. These near- professional productions are a product of our own staff members who worked many hours to develop them. The class officers' pages, also a staff production, were made possible by way of super-imposing photography. It has been a wonderful experience for us, to piece together the material for this book. We hope you like it. Staff and Management THE GOLDEN EAGLE Photo by JFL - Brackettville Movie Set. School Campus Cafeteria V. A. Building Band Hall Gymnasium High School Elementary School We Dedicate A stranger to us only in his arrival at Junction High School three years ago, Mr. Engman began his ad- ministration as the new man with many new rules. Through these years the student body has learned to re- spect his high ideals and infinite patience. A student can walk into his office any time of day and be wel- comed with a smile and a cheery word that always prove to be an inspiration. He is loved by the student body for his guidance and never-ending friendship. Even though his duties as administrator are many,he has proven to be a wise counselor, providing students with a new light to see the pathway of the future in edu- cation. May a rocket of the future continue to carry love and friendship of his kind to the hearts and minds of students in the new frontier. It is for his past guidance and for the leadership which he now provides Junction High School that we, the Golden Eagle Staff, respectfully dedicate the 1961 edition of this book to our superintendent, Mr. Dave Engman. Administration Superintendent JUNCTION PUBLIC SCHOOLS J. D. Engman B. A.; M.A. Dear students and friends, all: This past school year has been, I think, outstanding in progress toward higher standards of scholarship for our entire school system. You students are to be commended for the manner in which you have hit the books. I know each of you realizes the highly competitive society you are going into, and under- stands what an education can mean in terms of better living standards. Our present world asks you to grow up perhaps too quickly, and I consider it a high com- pliment to your collective character and intelligence that you have grasped and have ac- cepted these stern realities and have met your personal education obligations with cour- age, resourcefulness and good humor. By so doing, you have set the pattern for future stu- dents to emulate, a condition which will mean much to JHS in the years ahead. Sincerely, J. D. Engman Dear Students: This yearbook is a reminder of the things that happened during the school year 1960 - 61. Some will remember it as a failure. Regardless of how one remembers a year, it becomes a year of education in successes and failures. Best of good forture to everyone for a more successful year in the future.
