□ Co-Editors Bridget! O’Neal Robbie' McGowan Advisor Mr. Charles Baker Junction City High School Ninth and Eisenhower Junction City , Kansas 66441 Once upon a time .... The seniors worked but had some fun 12 The juniors dreamed of being class number one. 48 The sophomores had just two more years 72 Our athletes fought with minute fears . 98 Tho teachers yes, were very near 140 Our Queens held back that little tear. 1; 8 Our Clubs they numbered oh, so grand 172 Our active spirit rang throughout the land. 198 Our achievements showed what we had done And that is why we were No. 1 Welcome. . . . Aseditors and staff ofthis 1978Story Book, Once upon a time.. we would like to give you one more look at this year. This year brought not only change, buta new'enthusiasm in both students and teachers. CHANGE-a vital word to all of us this year. With leadership in the form of the new administration and the many new teachers, we met the change head on and created a better school than ever before. Throughout this entire year we have all changed in many ways and we hope that looking through, you will recall those changes as if dreaming in a fantasy world and remember the part you played In this little Story Book. Senior Division This year the Seniors won second place in the Homecoming parade. Graduation announcements were chosen by the class committee, and the whole class voted on class colors, the class flower and the class motto. During the year the Seniors worked diligently to raise money for the gift to the school. The last days of school brought excitement and anticipation, with measuring for caps and gowns, mailing those last minute graduation notices and planning for Senior week. COMMENT: This Senior class has been really great! Everyone worked so hard, and really took pride in the school, Beth Johnson, Senior class, president. 1. The first five games and the last four games. The first part had disappointments and heartaches. The schedule was very tough, but injury to key players was still the key to the season. The second part was a New Season, and the players and coaches alike had a different attitude toward the rest of the year. The seniors will be missed and we wish them the best of everything. We only hope that they have learned from football, how to better play the game of life. The juniors and sophomores have next year to look forward to and hope to meet the goals that they set for themselves. Good luck to all. Coach’s Comments I am very pleased with the efforts and accomplishments of the 1977 cross country squad A record number of individuals turned out for the sport and most of them remained with the team the entire season. This was the first year for JCHS to field a Girls team, at least five runners are needed to have a team and six girls finished the season for us. Their hard work during the season earned them first place team finishes at Hays r.iK. the CKL. They went on to finish sixth out of 14 5A-4A teams in the state meet The boys team displayed steady progress The boys team displayed steady progress during the season. They had pretty rough competition during the season and it would have been easy to mentally let sown and not continue to work. But they continued to work hard and were repaid for their efforts by qualifying for the State meet. This being my first year at Junction City, I feel that the team and myself have learned a lot about volleyball and the CKL league competition. Although our record may indicate a disappointing season, I felt we improved with every meet. For a certain portion of the season we definately lacked a winning attitude, but we had times that we played together and as a result the girls turned in some very impressive performances, I feel that the volleyball program at JCHS is on a definite up sw ing. With only two seniors graduating and all the sophomores and juniors coming back, and an abundant supply of freshmen coming up, one could only look for good things in the future. I would like to commend all of the girls on the 1977 volleyball team on their hard worn and vast improvement. Also I would like to thank the assistant coach Deann Bartell, for all her help, and the assistance from Jim Ratzlaff for helping me get started here at JCHS. The Blue Jays found it difficult to put together four quarters of consistent play in order to win their share. Although the varsity had its difficulties, the younger Jays showed the most promise, as the Jr. Varsity finished the season with a 7-8 record, the best in two years, and the sophomores finished with a 7-1 record the best in many years. The prospects for next year may be brighter with six lettermen to return and the good sophomore team We trust that next year's team will not rely solely upon experience but work hard between now and November 15. Highpolnt of the season had to be the four wins over arch rival Manhattan. We were just a little away from winning, loosing many games by a small margin. We do have a bright outlook for next year with two excellent players returning, Andrea James and Kim Nelson. I was unhappy with our losing season, we lost many games we shouldn't have, but.we didn't play well. Next year if we're going to win, we have to cut down mental mistakes, we had an average of 25 turnovers a game this season. I'm going to be cautiously optimistic next year, trying to get the girls to work a lot harder We had excellent leadership from our seniors this year, we'll really miss Debbie Strait, Cheryl Courtney and Misty Anderson. The most important thing about thisyearisthat the girls know they can win. Wrestling Ben Bennett Coaches Lamont Godsey Head Coach Ben Bennett The second place finish in the state tournament has to be placed high on the list of most memorable events of our wrestlers experiences. This was not the only highlight of the season however. There were many bright spots as our record shows. We lost only three dual meets by a total of only five points, and placed third or better in all tournaments we entered. This was a very young team with only five Seniors on the squad and only four members back with regular varsity experience last year. This was a most gratifying experience because the squad kept improving each week and just missed beingState Champions by eight points. We wish the Seniors well as they graduate and hope they will remember this year fondly. The underclassmen should reflect on this fine year and come back next year determined to make it one better. U H 0 A W ■Color and Entertainment The JCHS Musical Program is something to be proud of. Under the direction of Mr. Charles Volland, Mrs. Ramona Printz and Mr. Norman Hogan. All students are given an opportunity to participate. With four singing groups offered (Concert Choir, JC Chorale, Symphonic Choir under the guidance of Mr. Volland and Treble Clef a female choir under the direction of Mrs. Printz) a student can look forward to an active year in music. Aside from the Choirs, Mr. Volland offers individuals voice lessons, Mrs. Printz has a course of keyboard and Mr. Hogan offers an extensive band program. Concert Choir is JCIIS largest musical ensemble. It is comprised of students who have to audition to become members. These students perform at many concerts including the Yuletide Festival at Christmas. The choir also participates in the annual CKL Vocal clinic and the State Music Festival where they recieve a rating on there performance. Members also can attend the Flint Hills Music Festival and tryout for All State Choir. JC Chorale is JCHS top vocal group. These 16 members are chosen from CC through strenuous auditions in which they must display an exrteme talent for both voice and dance. The group performs throughout the community year round and also give many concerts. Every member is urged to participate in vocal competition. This year Dee Eshleman and Connaitre Miller were accepted for All State Choir. Symphonic Choir is a choir of mixed voices. They also perform at concerts and are able to participate at all the vocal competition throughout the year. Treble Clef Choir is a girls choir who are quite active too. They also do area performances for groups. Aside from singing they also do dance routines. Irene frawas. officer. T.ncia Boria American Field Service AFS International Scholarships is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1914 as a volunteer ambulance corps with the allied forces during World War I. With the belief that personal relationships between individuals of different cultures foster international understanding and friendship, AFS ambulance drivers in 1947 initated the Winter Program. This program enables students from abroad to come to live for a year with US families and study in our secondary schools. Three more programs were added between 1957 and 1972, with approximately 4, 000 students from more than 60 countries participating each year. Aysegul Cfcyaman, Turkey, Irene Erdtner, Austria, Inger Leacock, Barbados, Maritza Mendez, Costa Rica, participated in the JCHS AFS Mini Conference A. F.S. The Don Carrier family hosts this year's AFS student, Irene Erdtner, from Austria, As both of her parents are deceased, she has a very close relationship to her four older brothers two of them living with her in a small village on the outskirts of Innsbruck. Although she has already graduated back home, JCHS has been an educational experience for her, since the clrriculum and the social activities are completely different from what she was used to. I am very interested in the the cultural aspects of this country as well as American Literature and art. Irene said. So far this year has added a lot to my life. I have gotten to know many fantastic people with different ideas and new ways of doing things. I have been to many Interesting places and encountered the American Heritage._______________________ I Bour AFS student abroad is Curt Hamm ill,a 1977 graduate of I rCHS. Index We have reached the end of our little story book and the finish of a fantastic school year. As you look in your book, we hope you will be able to fantasize on the parts you have played. We wish to commend liness. This year we emphasized candid pictures, and we even revised a section called Student Life, which included you. The students through limited space and our own fallibility we apologize for any errors in spelling and identification we have made. Inclosing, we, as Co-Editors, would like to express our deep gratitude to our loyal and hard working-staff. They are the ones who totally compiled this year's Pow Wow. Their long hours before and after school and even on Staurdays, were greatly appreciated and showed the dedication they have towards this book. It was a great year. With a new administration and a fairly new faculty, we all grew together and made it the best year for JCflS. A lot has happened this year that we will recall, such as, open lunch pri-.Hedges being given to all, JCHS hosting the 4A State Basketball Tournament, and receiving favorable compliments from everyone on national scene. In a few years when we pick up our Once upon a time... we will realize, especially the senior class really just the beginning. The start of our new lives. Have a good life, God Bless you all, and thank you for reading. In special acknowledgements we the Co-Editors would like to thank the following people: Mr. and Mrs Charles Baker, for their guidance and leadership and understanding. Mr. Warford and Bob Strahley, being moved downtown was hard on all of us, but their quality in printing was unsurpassed as usual. Ron Blsehoff of the Junction City Daily Union, for extra pictures of Homecoming and Filly Football The yearbook staff photographers, Don Story, Steve Archer, Harvey Ellis, Rick Gillit, Robert TlA and Mark Gibb. Thank you for being there when we needed you. ’ Kelly Wright, our representative from Josten's. Thank you for your sensational idea for the and all the ext-a advice we so badly needed. cover Josten's American Yearbook, for having patience with our slim meeting of their deadlines Teachers of JCHS, for letting us out of class when a deadline was due. you all on your hamming and clowning, because you have each given this book so much color and live- End Co-Editors: § Closing @ime.
