Good morning, Yesterday! You wake up and time has slipped away, and suddenly it's hard to find the memories you left behind; Remember? Do you remember the laughter and the tears, the shadows of misty yesteryears? the good times and the bad you've seen and all the others in between, Remember? Do you remember the times of your life Reach back for the joy and the sorrow, put them away in your mind; for mem'ries are time that you borrow to spend when you get to tomorrow. Here comes the setting sun, the seasons are passing one by one; so gather moments while you may collect the dreams you dream today. Remember? Will you remember THE TIMES OF YOUR LIFE. The members of the JCHS Blue Jay football squad met together in mid-August and began setting their goals for the 1976 season. Each player had individual goals he wished to attain but as a team we were looking to Raytown. Our long-range goals were set for the CKL and state championships. The CKL championship was attained with an undefeated record in conference play. On Saturday following Thanksgiving, the season ended with the state championship game. The championship was not to be ours this year but the season was highly successful. Each game of the season furnished joys and disappointments for the team and thrills for the fans. Some incidents to remember include the three kickoff returns for touchdowns by Birch and Hammond in the Raytown game; the breath-taking double overtime victory over Manhattan; and the last-minute drive to win the Sub-state playoff game from Ward. Adding interest to JCHS football this year was the undefeated season of the Sophomore team under the leadership of Coach Dee Simpler. Many of the Sophomore squad received valuable experience in the varsity games this year. We wish to thank all those who helped make our 1976 season a success. We say good-bye to the Seniors with real regret. We hope our returning squad members will be looking forward to and start preparing for the 1977 season—it will soon be August again. This is a great satisfaction as a coach to see a player experience success. We did not have a winning season as a team, but in every meet someone was on their game and what they experienced during this competition is what they will remember. Nine girls completed the season and each one of these girls were a creditto JCHS. Whetheron or off the courts. The outstanding performance came at regionals contest with Lyn Herman and Terry Geringer teaming up for a fine third place finish. This qualified them for the state tournament. I wish the graduating seniors the best and thank you for your leadership. The four underclassmen I hope to see you next year and with the incoming ninth graders, unite to give a strong team effort in the 1977 season. Johnny Johnson? David Gled This year's cross country team was made up of twenty dedicated runners who worked together to do a good job of representing JCHS. Our team finishes, both varsity and junior varsity, were quite respectable in most of the meets considering the fact that we were competing against top-notch competition every week. I felt that we had especially fine performances at ourJC Invitational, CKL, and Regionals, where we just missed qualifying for the State Meet by one place. We had three sophomores and four juniors who gained valuable varsity experience which should help for next year. Our girls, Robin, Nikki, and Debbie, displayed continued improvement as the season progressed. Next fall we hope to have enough girls for a girls' team—this means at least seven girls—and it is also my intent to involve more ninth-graders in our program. I deeply appreciated the efforts of the six seniors and I hope they continue to enjoy running—not only as a competitive sport but also as an active pastime. Volleyball Third • This year's volleyball had a slow start, but we really made some good showings in the second half of the season. This was my first experience at coaching girls and volleyball. Starting out with alot of young, unexperienced players, plus an unexperienced coach hampered us at the start of the season. We learned together and learned very well. The girls hustled well for me all year and I was very proud of them. We dropped several matches because of inexperience, but we were nearly always in contention throughout the matches. The highlight of the season came with our Volleyball team is in its third year of competition. The '76 season has two new coaches to guide them. Head Coach Lloyd Graham and Assistant James Ratzlaff. Together they took the team to third place in Regionals. Lettering this year were Seniors Nancy Dageforde, Pat Bohannon, Carol Bateman, and Lynnell Russell. The Juniors were Misty Anderson, Debbie Bateman, Linda Henderson, and Cornelia Lincoln. And the Sophomores were Valerie Ballard, Vanessa Jackson, AndreaJames Kim Nelson and Kim Washington. in .J ii n • i 0 r n r H 1 i v w Regional Lower row: Renee Rhyne, Derris Stewart, Debra Courtney, Beverly Kemp. Season’s Recor JC 5-9 third place finish in the Regionals at Emporia. With our strong finish at the end of the season, we brought our record up to 5-9. The junior varsity finished with a 2-6 record. We lost several close matches but that's because we always tried to play everyone. It would have been nice to win a few more Junior Varsity games, but I believe that the playing experience is more valuable to a junior varsity team than the record. I owe alot of thanks to Mr. Ratzlaff for his help. They were a very DETERMINED group of young men that wanted to prove they could play and win. Their DEDICATION to improve was evident by what they did before the season ever started. The team has also put forth a tremendous EFFORT during the season as they played in the always competitive CKL with only six home games and managed to finish third, one game out of first. To the student body, I say thanks for all the support. We would not be able to enjoy the season as much if you weren't there to give us the much needed vocal support. To be successful it quite often requires a great amount of work and sacrificing. Because of your efforts, BLUE JAYS, you will be remembered as WINNERS. It was my pleasure to be associated with you. Individual work during the off-season had paid off in improved individual skills. At the end of this season we look back and see that our competition did also greatly improve. We could manage only a 1-11 record for the varsity season. However, basketball for girls is still very new in our school. Improvement in our program was evident. Most vividly was this shown in our Junior Varsity record which was 10-2, winning ten straight contests. The Blue Jay girls team is again looking forward to next year. This was the first team to go undefeated in dual matches and to win the three regular season tournaments was a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. We faltered at the regional and state from our goal of being state champions but we shouldn't let that mar the memory of the successful season. Booster Club, formerly known as Pep Club, not only aroused school spirit and cheered at the games (win or lose), but boosted player morale. Members were recognized by their heather blue T shirts, increst-ed with the school emblem and the school mascot, the Blue Jay. Individuals wearing the shirt were alknved to go to home games free. The conflict of not having meetings at the beginning of the year caused problems, but Booster Club and the cheerleaders carried on such duties as drawing posters, making boosters, and fixing treats for the players. To help keep up the spirit the cheerleaders sponsored spirit days, such as Overall Day, Crazy Sock Day, Sneaker Day, and Whistle Day in which the student body wore various objects to show-their spirit. Throughout the athletic season Booster Club helped build enthusiasm by providing skits for pep rallies and making victory lanes. Further spirit was shown by the newly formed card section, large w'hite signs with blue letters spelling out encouraging w'ords such as Go Jays. AFS not only hosts a student to our school but also sends a student abroad. Throughout the year AFS members learn about other cultures by informal get togethers with individuals who have lived abroad. The student chapter receives assistance in projects and social activities from the community adult chapter. These AFS activities include international dinners, pot luck picnics, and fund raising projects. In the future AFS hopes to branch out into a domestic exchange within Kansas. Katherina Kotoyantz was our American Abroad in the summer of 1976. She stayed with the Gartrells in Australia for three months. While there she went skiing in the Snowy Mountains; visited factories, industries, and vineyards; and toured Sydney, home ofthe famous Sydney Opera House. She was able to see native animals such as the koala, kangaroo, emu.andkukuberra. Katherina enjoyed with her family such activities as playing squash and going to dinner-dances. She said, I found the AFS program has gjven me a greater insight of people and a keener sense of my environment. Someday 1 hope to return to Australia and visit my Aussie family. He comes to Junction City from Sr i-Lanka (Ceylon), where he lives with hisparents, grandmother, and twin brother. His father is an administrator and his mother is a broadcaster. Shree's host family is Mr. and Mrs. Gary Devin and their children Doug, Andy, Mark, and Danny. Shree feels fortunate to have come to the U.S. during an election year. He also was happy to arrive intime to view the Olympics on TV. Sri-Lanka does not have television, and now watching TV is Shree's favorite pastime. Although the national sports of his country are cricket and rugby, he has learned to like American football. Throughout the year, Shree speaks to civic clubs and other groups interested in learning about his country. Concerning the American Field Service Shree says, AFS is a rewarding experience in which I have had the opportunity to learn about the states and the people. This organization has broadened my outlook on life. He is pictured here with members of the Devin family. To those who will look through this book, we hope you will be able to understand the amount of work that went into its completion. We tried not to slight anyone but because of the push of deadlines, limited space, and our own fallibility we could not give equal coverage to everyone. For this we offer our apologies. In closing, we as Co-Editors of the 1977 Pow Wow wish to recognize the various people who have contributed towards making our ideas become realities. Our sincere thanks go to the following persons: Mr. John McNown of Josten's American Yearbook Company, for all his help and guidance. Mr. Lauren Warford and Mr. Tom Miller of the USD 475 Print Shop, for spending many hours preparing headlines. Senior names, and ads. Roland Fabia, for the exceptional picture he contributed for the cover of this book. Arlan Mock, for some of the nature pictures used in the Foreward. Albert and Coralyn Mamaril, for their help with the Foreward layouts. Anderson's Studio, for the pictures they took for the Activities and Organizations sections. Tom Throne of the Junction City Daily Union, for some of the action shots for the Football division of the Sports section. Our own photographers Steve Deasy, Mike Dupere, Keith Greenawalt, Jerry Fincher, and Mark Holloway, for their outstanding photography and the time outside school hours which they devoted to their assignments. Mrs. Alberta Hill, our adviser, for her patience, hard work, and skill which helped us get the yearbook completed. The Yearbook Staff, for persistently meeting deadline after deadline and contributing greatly, each in his or her own way, to the making of this book. And we extend special thanks to Chappell and Company, Inc., for letting us employ, as our theme, the title and lyrics for The Times of Your Life, (Copyright 1974 and 1975 by Three Eagles Music, ASCAP, A division of Roger Nichols Music, Inc. Chappell Co. Inc., Administrator. International Copyright Secured. All rights reserved). Sohereitis: a year filled with memories to be treasured by each of us in years to come. Between the pages of this yearbook, we hope to have captured the people, the places and the times that we all have encountered and which are now a part of us. The value of this book will increase as time passes. Right now it is just another yearbook we look through to see how many times our picture appears. But when we pick it up 10 to 20 years from today, it will not be for selfish reasons, but for the memories it holds. • (ykcomklf INDEX SENIORS Adair, Deanna 28 Adams, Alice 18 Aguero, Scarlett 173,
