It served as the Senior High until 1929. Every future has o post The City Junior High was built at Ninth and Adams in 1919. An addition was added in 1929, and the school became the Junior-Senior High. In 1958, the three upper grades moved to Ninth and Eisenhower, leaving this building a Junior High again. Still another addition was added on the Madison Street side of the building in 1970. Co-Editors Kaye Wolnik and Kathy Dejesus Adviser Mrs. Alberta Hill The Senior High located at Ninth and Eisenhower was built in 1958. More classrooms were added to the east side of the building in 1963. Later, even more additions were builton the west side to complete the school as we see it today. In the fall of 1975, one more addition was started to accommodate the growth of the student body. As editors and staff of the Nineteen Hundred Seventy-Six Yearbook, we would like to take you back for a second look not only at this year, but at the years that have passed to bring us into this Two hundred years ago, July 1776, marked the beginning of an era of growth. Until then. Freedom and Liberty were words that had been fought for by many, but enjoyed by few. The Declaration of Independence brought about another word—CHANGE. Nothing would ever be the same in America as it had been before. This year, 1976, has also been a year of change. Junction City Senior High School will never be the same as we remember it. New locations, enlargements and improvements for the school have only been a reminder of the growing size of our city. New and advanced courses, girls' athletics, and the formation of new organizations reflect the evolution of our times. We hope that by looking through this Bicentennial Yearbook, you will recall the way it was in 1776, dream of the way it will be in 2076, and remember The Way We Were in 1976. dreams were Bicentennial. 3 SK vjy n jc or i 1 ov WH r-,u. uwiCf N d '«4iu 'djlj JdjfdCj O paUJSDSip |DUJ SUJOdJQ Blessed with hope and freedom from strife. We started the year defensively without defensive ends, middle guard, or experienced defensive halfback. DougDutchychin, who was being groomed for the position, moved to Philadelphia. With this kind of beginning, we lost three of the first four games, all games being lost mainly by our own mistakes. However, this team stayed tough and improved with almost every game. The highlight of the season for me was the victory over a very good Dodge City team on our home field in the State Regional Playoffs, 34-7. The low point of the season was the first and last games. The first game when we losttoagood, big Raytown, Missouri team, 33-28. The last game, lost to Derby (25-16) in the Sub-State Playoffs, was to say the least, a chilling affair. We always hope that each team and each team member gets more from the football season than what they give. May God bless them in whatever they choose to do with their lives. — Coach A1 Simpler INDIVIDUAL HONORS Rod Pray: All CKL, All State, Captain Melvin Moyer: All CKL, All State Honorable Mention Bryan Phipps: All CKL, All State Honorable Mention Skip Holmes: All CKL, All State Honorable Mention Buck Winn: All CKL, All State Honorable Mention Walter Sanders: All CKL Honorable Mention Robin Stewart: All CKL Honorable Mention Mike Newell: All CKL Honorable Mention Bobby Whitten: All CKL Honorable Mention Bret Stevens: Co-Captain Ben Bennett Line Coach Virgil Ranker End Coach -ouinov FOOTBALL 1975 Front row: Norman Ford, Richard Holmes, Bill Burgoon, Mark Roberts, John Kozlowski, Walter Sanders, Bret Stevens, Skip Holmes, Melvin Moyer, Rod Pray, Bryan Phipps, Mike Newell, Robin Stewart, Terry Schad, Ron Moore. However, personal and team gains are not measured only by the amount of points we score or how many the opponent scores but by the effort each person puts into an activity. I must say that the players, cheerleaders, pep club, band, student body, sponsors, faculty and many community members have made an effort to help each other. A defeat in 1 ife must not hold any of us back. We must quickly adjust and strive to improve both ourself and the world we live in. Even in winning we must strive to improve, otherwise, we soon start progressing in the wrong direction. To the seniors on the squad I wish them well in their indeav-ors. I trust they have learned from this experience. To the underclassmen we must work to be better in '77. The support during the 1975-76 season has been appreciated. We had our ups and downs. We did have more ups than downs it seems. We were really a young team in age but there was some experience there, enough to carry us in the early season. The C.K.L. Championship was a highlight but to win our First Regional ever was an outstanding effort. The few seniors we had on the squad have a lot of good memories to live with and the underclassmen have more to come. To wrestle at JCHS is an honor and a chance atState wide recognition. We hope each young man will make the most of his experience. It was a good season for the Varsity and the Junior Varsity. All members of the squad can come back and point with pride to the trophy case where the evidence of their accomplishments will rest. , T,ov 6-191 Coach Ben Bennett WRESTLING SQUAD First Row: Andy Barlow, James Shaffer, Tim Rudolph, Karl Olson, Harry May, Ted Davis, Fred Spaulding, Jack Powers, Rod Glessner, Robin Stewart, Doug Boyd, Bobby Whitten. Coach’s Comments The efforts of seniors Ed Arve-sonandRon Johnson highlighted the performances of this year's JCHS Cross Country team. They were the top two finishers for our team in every meet and took turns beating each other through out the course of the season. This close rivalry paid off as both runners earned the distinction of All-CKL when Ed placed seventh and Ron placed eighth in the league meet at Salina. In the Regionals, the following week at Hays, they both qualified for the State when Ron placed seventh and Ed placed ninth. Unfortunately, Ron suffered a stress fracture in that race and was unable to make it to the State. His best 2-mile time was a 10:05 at McPherson and he probably would have bettered that time at the State. Ed was our only State entrant and turned in a career best time of 10:02 which earned him a nineteenth place finish out of 80 runners. was also very happy with the performances of our two junior girls, Robin Carlyon and Carolyn Tozier. They worked real hard all year and improved their times tremendously. Carolyn's best 2-mile time was 12:58 at Hays, and Robin's fastest was 13:18 at the CKL meet. They both ended the season in fine fashion when Carolyn placed fourthand Robin sixth in the CKL girls team race. As a result of their high finish at the CKL and their season-long dedication, they were awarded varsity letters. From a team point of view, our best efforts came at the McPherson meet (a third place finish) and the CKL in which we placed fourth. We had 13 underclass-menfinishthe season and out of this group nine will return as lettermen next year. If most of these people return and continue to improve, we can look forward to a good season next fall. 129 HAROLD CLINE Best Time - 10:46, Regionals RON JOHNSON Best Time - 10:05 .McPherson ED ARVESON Best Time - 10:02, State Placed nineteenth at State TOP SIX CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS DAVID HENLY Best Time - 10:57, Regionals DEAN BLANKEN Best Time - 10:25, McPherson JOHN JOHNSON Best Time - 10:52, McPherson ' ■1 Top left and right: Robin Carlyon and Carolyn Toizerfight for the lead. Coach's Comments Thefirstgirls' basketball team at Junction City High School was a small and special group of girls. Eighteen athletes finished the season. Though winless, the girls scored several moral victories. Few teams will ever improve as much in a single season. We will return some experienced people to our team next year. We are hoping to get mo re girls from the high school and the new Sophomore class to participate in our program next year. Also, we are looking forward to winning. I was proud to coach this team and to work with Miss Law. Coach’s Comment This was the first year for the girls basketball program here at J.C.H.S. We started the year with no experience in the area of basketball and finished the year with a great deal more knowledge of the game We came very close to winning several of our winning several of our games as the scored indicated and lost two overtimes. This I feel was largely due to the fact that we were unsure of ourselves. We hope to be stronger next year and be ahead of where we ended this year in the areas of shooting, ball handling, and self discipline. We lost games we should have won; however, we were in contention in every one of our matches except possibly the Lawrence game (State Champs, 4-A. We defeated the CKL Champs, Salina South, the only time we met them this season. We placed fourth in the CKL. We will lose one girl off next year's squad, senior Kyle Smith: a very fine volleyball player. However, we return a very good nucleus for next year's squad. I have enjoyed coaching the gi rls the last two years and feel in several years we will be very competitive in girls volleyball. I also felt the girls should set priorities as to what is important to them. Once they decide to be an athlete, they should go all out to be the very best in that sport and cut out other activities that may hinder their goal. — Coach Fiffe __ Season Record Manhattan Lost Clay Center Lost Quandrangular Salina Central Lost Chapman Won Salina Central Lost Highland Park Tourney Emporia Won Lawrence Lost Emporia Lost Salina South Won Manhattan Lost CKL Fourth Great Bend Won Hays Lost Salina Central Lost Chapman Won Manhattan Lost A Team Won 5 Lost Lost 10 B Team Won 3 Lost 3 141 ROYALTY jit 143 Queen Kyle Smith Junior escorts: Joe Lopez, Rico Webb, and Jack Powers. JC Chorale 1975-76 has been a musically successful year especially in view of the fact that there were many new students in the vocal music program. The Concert Choir began the year with over thirty new voices, and the J.C. Chorale was almost an entirely new group with only four of its members carrying over from last year. This year the music groups were busy presenting fall, winter, spring and yuletide concerts, as well as participating in the CKL league festival and state music festival. This organization sponsors foreign exchange students to and from our school. JCHS has hosted students from Turkey, Malaysia, England, Australia, Philippines, Brazil, South Wales, Sweden, Germany, Paraguay, Australia, Denmark, Switzerland, and Argentina. Six JCHS students have been sent abroad to various countries on AFS Scholarships. From the top: Mr. Case, Sponsor; Katherina Kotoyantz, President; and Franz Hulsen, Foreign Student from Germany. The AFSyeax abroad is used to get acquainted with and to learn about other people, and this year has been a different learning experience from what 1 was used to at home. Here at JCHS I got to meet many nice and different people and I had a real good time, comments JCHS' foreign student, Franz Hulsen. Coming from Krefeld, Germany, Franz is the oldest of four children. His mother is a housewife and his father is a coppersmith. After graduating from JCHS, Franz will have to complete two more years of schooling in Germany. From there he plans on going to college and studying business and economics. Besides being an accomplished swimmer, Franz is also well-versed in English and German. He has studied Latin for six years and carries a diploma in that language. His American host family is Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Fine and their son, Keith, is a sophomore at JCHS. The only bad thing one could say about the AFS Americans Abroad program, is that it only lasts for three months. I could have stayed a year, says Bryce Abbott about his stay in Los Andes, Chile. There are many fantastic lessons to be learned from other people and their environments and AFS is giving youth of the world a chance for these experiences. tEfojr rfiNff $$ I V ‘ I . • K’ • V,l . Another year has past, and in the pages of this yearbook we hope to have captured the Bicentennial spirit of the 1975-76 school year. With faces and places from the early 1900's to newer profiles of today, we can all look back on the way we were as students and faculty at JCHS. As Co-Editors of this Bicentennial yearbook, we wish to recognize the various people who have contributed in their own way towards its success. The Pennell Collection from the Spencer Library at Kansas University in Lawrence who provided us with the historical pictures used in this book. Mr. Lauren Warford and Tom Miller, Unified SchoolDistrict 475'sprinters, spent many hours preparing headlines and other copy. Tom Throne from the Daily Union contributed various football action shots. And we especially thank our own photographers, Bryce Abbott, Quinn Burleson, and Brian Anderson who devoted many outside class hours to their assignments. Of course, no yearbook could be produced without the dedication of the entire staff. A special heartfelt thanks to our advisor, Mrs. Alberta Hill, for the extra time and effort she put in to see that the yearbook was completed on time. As wegooutinto life, leaving the sheltering walls of JCHS behind us, we realize that this is only the beginning. Just as we have watched the builders, throughout the school year, carefully laying the foundation for the expanded school building, each of us has put down a foundation on which we will build our lives. We will never forget our days here. We know that the way we are today is the school's gift to us; what we make of ourselves in the future will be our gift to the Co-Editors STUDENT INDEX Abbott, Bryce 30, 51, 158, 168, 170, 195, 197 Abbott, Bren 84, 95, 96, 97, 100, 186, 194, 196, 201 Abt, Nanette 191 Adair, Deanna 64 Adams, Belinda 84 Adams, Michael 84, 100 Adkison, DaiTa84 Aflleje, Julie 84 Alexander, Jeanette 84, 200 Alexander, LeWan 5, 64, 74, 75,163, 171, 173, 177, 178 171,173,177,178, 186, 188, 194 Allen, Geneva 64, 74, 80 Alley, Toni 64,74, 186, 188, 193 Allison, Jonna 64, 74, 80, 163, 174, 186, 189, 193 Allison, Sandra 84, 168 Alston, Karen 84 100 Alston, Sonja 100 Alter, Robert 64 Anders, Donald 64 Anderson, Brian 30, 158 Anderson, Greg 84 Anderson, James 64 Anderson, Mary84 Anderson, Misty 84, 132, 133, 135 Anderson, Orin84 Anthony, David 84, 172 Anthony, Dorothy 171,172,174,175, 198 Apfel, Caroline 64 Apfel, Victoria 30, 193 Appleby, Jimmy 64 Applegate, Lorry 85 Archer, Cindy 64, 74,133,164, 186, 201 Archer, Ray 85 Archer, Becky 30 Arjona, Gina 85, 95, 100 Arroyo, John 30 Artz, Marion 85 Arveson, Brenda 85 Arveson, Eddy 30,128, 129, 130, 190, 191 Ash, Robert 30 Atchison, Larry 64 Atkins ,Yule85,105 Augustine, Gladys 64,74,186 Austin, Freddie, 64, 105 Austin, Sonya 201 Bacani, Helen 65 Bacani, Mary 30 Bachand, Maryann 85 Baechtold, Ted 65, 112, 113, 116 Baker, Dave 85 Baldwin, Terry 85, 100 Ballard, Lora 85, 186 Barlow, Keith 65, 120, 121, 122, 126 Barnes, Krishna 65 Barnes, Luana 85 Barta, Rhonda 85, 100, 168, 170, 186 Bartlett, Deborah 85 Bartlett, Richard 85 Basey, Susan 65, 80, 193 Baszak, Mike 65 Bateman, Carol 65, 132, 133, 134 Bateman, Debra 85, 132, 133 Bauer, Debra 65, 175 Bauerband, Scott 85, 120 Baughman, Robert 65 Baughman, Tim 65, 168, 194 Baughman, Teresa 85 Beasley, Lori 85 Beckman, Joe 100, 199 Beckman, Mary 31, 181, 198 Beeks, Billie 65, 174, 186 Bedell, Lester 85 Benner, Alfred 85, 200 Bennett, Stephen 85 Berry, Robert 31 Bevley, Michelle 65, 80 Biggs, Rose 31 Billinger, Peggy 65 Birch, Jeffery 85, 105, 108 Birkhead, Karin 31, 198 Bischoff, William 80 Black, Audie 65, 75, 80, 145, 163, 164, 173, 186, 188, 201 Black, Doreatha 85, 164 Black, Leona 201 Blanken, Dean 85, 128, 129, 130, 199 Bliss, Laurel 85 Blodgett, Billy 65 Bobbitt, Jesse 66, 128 Bogen, Charles 66 Bogen, David 31, 120 Bohannon, Patricia 66 Boisclair, Roger 66, 105 Bolen, Richard 31 Bollman. Upper right: Melvin Moyer and Steve Nelson congratulate each other after the CKL victory. Lower right: Moyer winning one of his record four gold medals at the CKL Meet. Coach’s Comments The 1976 track squad returned only 13 letter-men out of 34 from 1975. Some seniors preferred not to return to the team for various reasons, other lettermen moved away and several were lost by graduation. This lack of depth in experience and ability hurt the team effort several times throughout the season, especially at the state meet. Even with this handicap the Blue Jays won the Topeka West Relays, the Wichita State Relays, the Junction City Invitational, and the CKL championship. The Jays were second in the Regionals which were held on our track for the first time. Topeka West, winner of our regional, placed second to Sumner in the State Track and Field Meet with the Junction City Blue Jays finishing third. Harold Cline was the most improved runner this year with Steve Nelson, Ed Arveson, and Melvin Moyer, the other seniors, adding points in every meet. Steve Hammond and Kenny Smith are two sprinters to watch next year. Darrel Murphy was much improved this year in the shot and discus. Better things can be expected of him in 1977 in shot, discus, and javelin. Several good juniors and sophomores from this year are returning to make a good nucleus for 1977. The incoming sophomores will be welcomed to our squad. They should furnish more depth and quality. Blue Jay Track Coaches, pictured above, are Gus Noble, Head Coach A1 Simpler, Jim Ratz-laff, Robert Schmoekel, and Virgil Ranker. JCHS is proud of the two state championships earned this year, one by Harold Cline in the 880-yard run. Cline also won in the CKL and regionals. The other by the Medley relay team, winning both regional and state honors, which was composed of Kenny Smith, Steve Hammond, Steve Nelson, and Ed Arveson. We look forward to another good track season in 1977, and to a squad of men with Blue Jay pride and tradition. When you have eleven girls finish the season with fourteen events, you can't field a full entry. We had some strong efforts made with some individuals. Robin Carlyon finished third in the mile at CKL. Carol Bateman put forth a good effort in the ball throw, and we qualified our 440 relay team for State. The high school tennis season comes and goes so quickly that one has to sit down when it’s over and reflect upon it, to hilly evaluate it accurately. We had a good year, but not a great one. We played some good tennis — even excellent at times. We improved tremendously the last month, for we had a very young and inexperienced varsity and junior varsity. Next year we will have Bruce Scott, Tim McCandless, Cory Coryell, and Kevin Westover as letter men coming back. We lost two senior lettermen, Kevin Thompson and Scott Deam. All six of these players can go a long way yet in tennis, if they want to. I want to thank all the players for their work and determination. See you on the tennis court. SIGNING PARTY Excitement filled the air as music was played to fit the theme, The Way We Were. Students gathered at 7:30 on May 12, to capture their first look at the 1976 yearbook. Many memories were brought back as students reviewed their school year. Signing each others' yearbooks highlighted the party. Friends were once again reminded of the little things which had brought joy to them. The story evolved around the lives of servicemen and nurses in the French occupied islands of the South Pacific during World War n. From these islands can be seen the mystical island of Bali Ha'i which is off-limits to the servicemen. Bloody Mary, a native of Bali Ha'i, entices the soldiers to visit it with her romantic tales and songs. The romance of the islands is heightened through the romance of Emile de Becque and Ensign Nellie Forbush. Their love is troubled because of the fact that he is older, been married once, and has two small children. Another love affair concerns Lieutinent Joseph Cable and Liat, daughter of Bloody Mary. Although he loves the young island girl, he cannot come to marry her because of their different backgrounds. Beautiful songs, lively dances, and a talented cast under excellent stage direction, gave South Pacific the charm and warmth it has become popular for throughout the years. All those who worked so hard and gave much of their time to the play will not soon forget the resounding applause which comes from a show well done. — '9 -197 , Opposite page: Emile (Robert Landrith) introduces his children (Brian Stever and Gail Ban-tugan) to Nellie (Judy Narverud).
