The Central Kansas League is the oldest standing league in the state and is renowned for its ability. Its member schools have consistently taken high honors in the state, not only in sports, but in the fields of vocal music and debate also. Representatives from the member schools (Junction City, Manhattan, Salina South, Salina Central, and McPherson) visited Hays and Great Bend high schools in an effort to promote friendship and good feelings throughout the league and to make the new members feel welcome. The Junction City representatives, accompanied by Mr. A1 Ferguson, all agreed that the trip was an enjoyable and rewarding experience. 8 Central Kansas League (1)JC reps on the CKL Welcoming Committee: Velina Houston, Keith Roesler, Lois Scarborough, Pam Sjoholm, and Debbie Ramirez. We, os Editors of the 1975 Yearbook, thought it most important for a yearbook to hold true reminiscent value and not only fact. We have attempted in this book to create. Our goal was to produce a yearbook that was not just a book, but an idea in itself. As the graduating class of Nineteen Hundred Seventy-Five withdraw ourselves forever from this truly vital time of our lives, we look back respectfully. Our high school years were a time of maturing and experiencing constant changes. More than ever, this class has manifested the greatest sense of brotherhood ever to exist in this high school. We extend our thanks to whoever and whatever deserves them. In later years, this book will be picked up off some dusty shelf. Upon opening it, our minds will travel back to these precious times, full of cherished friends and dreams, and it will be- Yesterday Once More On behalf of the 1975 Yearbook Staff, we extend special thanks to Mrs. Alberta Hill, our advisor. On behalf of the Graduating Class of 1975, we extend thanks to all of you who, whether you were aware of it or not, made our memories happen. co-editors Vfcjirja |ou6for| tiQcu.c uxnie 13 (l)Tim Rudolph studying. When they played Id sing along--it made me smile. Those were such happy times and not so long ago how I wondered where they d gone. But they re back again just like a long lost friend, all the songs I love so well. Every sha-la-la-la...still shines Every shing-a-ling-a-ling that they re startin to sing so fine. When they get to the part where he s breaking her heart it can really make me cry. And iust like before. It's yesterday once more - - Look in back on how it was in years gone by and the good times that I had makes today seem rather sad, so much has changed. It was songs of love that I would sing to them and I'd memorize each word. Those old melodies still sound so good to me as they melt the years away. All my best memories come back clearly to me. Some can even make me cry. Just like before. ■35 M it's Yesterday Once More- SENIORS 1975 Walking hand in hand through years of memories, our bodies perhaps separated, but our minds would not let go. The time was ours but for the taking, and it still is. So, as we sit on this silver threshold in a proximity no words can describe, let us clasp hands again and recall the effervescence of the past. Relive it for a moment. Paint it into your soul lest you one day cannot recall its subtle splendor. I love you, my friend. I hope we someday meet again . . . -Velina Houston 9k 3B € £ n 3B , $ctS i« i c rtA 38 €'K MC€ rA the BLUEJAYS were undefeated in football CKL 38 Ay 38 cAcr 38'Xtyyd rouin €tl€'r u fYnrt Ar w« w« 38 A?cr n • Ay 38 a XT r Aft A At h s; ' •. He shall feed me in a green pasture, and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul, and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness for his Name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou shalt prepare a table before me in the presence of them that trouble me, thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full. Surely thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. STEVEN DEAN BRADEN was born Mai'ch 9, 1958 in Travis Air Force Base, California. He died May 27, 1974, and lies to rest in Milford, Kansas. He was a member of the Debate and Forensics team. His main interests were basketball, music in general, and swimming. Although Steve is no longer with us, many will hold his memory for a long time in the future. -Annette Hakala 64 Class of lf 76 (1) Secretary, Kyle Smith; President, Carl Olson; Vice-President, Milton Gray; Treasurer, Diane Cotton. Concert Choir Eighty students with good voices reaching for the top Mr. Charles Volland, Vocal Director The Choir developed into a good choral group, giving fine performances at the Fall Concert, Yuletide Festival and Spring Concert. The Choir also represents JCHS in the CKL Vocal Festival and State Music Festival. A main and enjoyable project of Concert Choir is their annual Say It With Music production which, this year, was Showboat. The 1974-75 Concert Choir has been a particularly challenging and interesting group for me to direct as this is the largest choir that I have ever worked with in my teaching career. I am particularly proud of this year's band. I believe that a key reason for the improvement of this year's band is found in the word PRIDE. Each year I have noted a growing pride within the bands membership, but this year I have noticed more commitment, self sacrifice, and desire for excellence than ever. An example of the improvement of the band can be seen in our marching program. Two years ago the band presented a competition show which consisted of several picture formations. Last year the band show consisted of word formations and a drill routine consisting of three basic drill maneuvers. This year the band has added no less than 14 new drill movements to their routines. Next year we hope to build on the accomplishments of THIS outstanding group. They have set a tough standard to surpass.” Mr. Norman Hogan, Director Front row: Tina Collette, Elizabeth George, Carolyn Tozier, Debbie Lee; Second row: Debbie Burdett, Laura Dickinson, Patty Mahan, Allison Lauderdale, Linda Carrasco, Nancy Dageforde, Janet Tozier, Diana Case; Third row: Malia Cantrell, Milton Gray, Evelyn Hernandez, Pat Fosha, Lynne Jones, Ted Cranford, John Gerald, Craig Collins, Mary Hoffman, Linda Doctlero, Sara Peoples, Richard Walker, Ruby Reed, Isabell Hernandez; Fourth row: Marchia Radabaugh, Sharon Kane, Terry Shoemaker, Tom Holmahn, David Starnes, Bruce Oliver, Julie Davis, Carolyn Johnson, LorindaDuch, Wayne Hoyle, Jackie Roach, Carl Olson, Joe Lopez, Patty Rogge, Sue Fincher, Charla Gwin, Brian Wunder; Fifth row: Patty Hurford, QuinnBurelson, Jim Turner, Greg Luthi, Donnie Whitebread, Mark Cantrell, Steve Quelch, Wayne Pope, Pam Brown, Katherina Kotyantz, Dan Easthouse, John Gasswint, Rick Fernandez, Bob Diaz, Greg Denver, Monte Dib-ben, Ray Johnson, Robert Miles, David Henley, Henry Toussaint, Mark Davis, Clyde Cummins; Back row standing: Clyde Eidson, Alex Diestel-kamp, Tim Baughman, J. And the beat went on and on and on and on. . . The Royale Blue is one of the most active instrumental performing groups at JCHS. The membership is drawn from the Blue Jay Band and represents some of the best musicians in the school. This year the group has concentrated on building a large repertoire of music from both past and present. Probably the most important improvement in the group is their self-directed efforts in improvisation of solos. At least six of the members have been working out their own solos for performance numbers. Norman Hogan, Royale Blue Director 132 President Cheryl Petty ? American Field Service I like to talk, is a favorite saying of this year's charming AFS'er, Maria Dreon, who aspires to become a lawyer. Maria comes to Junction City from Mar del Planta, Argentina, a city about 250 miles south of Buenos Aires. Here her family, five children, and her parents live and enjoy life. Mr. Dreon owns a wholesale brass and steel business, and Mrs. Dreon teaches first grade. Maria completed her secondary work before coming to the United States, and has worked three summers as a receptionist for her grandfather, a gynecologist-obstetrician in Mar del Planta. Maria's host family, the Martin Laues', have really made a home for her here in Junction City. Maria remarks that she can tell when someone loves her, and she knows the Laues express this feeling for her. Her A-merican sister, Cindy, shares her life. They double date, swim, play the guitar, and in general share alot of neat sisterly things together. During the fir st few months of her stay in Junction City, Maria spent her time learning to understand people and the American language, slang and all. Now Maria is engaged in making speeches each week to civic organizations and other groups interested in learning about her country, Argentina. A very important aspect of AFS is the uniting of the two countries involved. Giving speeches is one way Maria has of sharing herself, her country and her culture with the people she embraces while in the United States. (1) Maria takes typing for an American course. It is not the intent of the American Field Service Program to Americanize the AFS student, but to learn from them and share ourselves with them in such a way to break down prejucicial beliefs. The AFS motto, Walk together, talk together, all you peoples of the earth, then and only then shall you know peace, states well the purpose of the AFS Program. Modern day travel has made the world smaller, but it takes people to u-nite the world! Camera Club The Camera Club is organized to teach the members the fundamentals of photography. They learn all aspects of picture-taking, including developing and mounting. Awards are distributed to the people who exhibit prints at the Regional Art Exhibition. They also have a photography display in the school library. Pictures are taken at Wrestling tournaments and are sold as a money-making project. MR. I lU L 6 SPORTS 1975 One solid army of jocular contenders were we, loving the sport of it, flaunting the endless triumphs. (We would have had it no other way.) -vh- JCHS FOOTBALL 1974 Coach’s Comments The 1974 edition of the Junction City Blue Jays football team is one that was outstanding in many ways. First, they were undefeated in regular season play. Second, they won several games by coming from behind as late as the last three minutes of the game. Third, they did not have the great size, or speed that some of our opponents had. Injury to some key personnel also took its toll. As Head Coach, I am very proud of this team, they showed real character, desire, hustle, and many of the characteristics of CHAMPS. I only hope and pray that their lives may be as successful and happy as their football season has been. I wish to thank Mr. Bennett and Mr. Noble for their fine efforts and to the team members for a job well done. Not pictured: Melvin Moyer and Rod Pray. Coach’s Comments If judged by the won and lost record, we had a very poor season; if judged by the progress made, we had an excellent season. We outscored the number one team in the State from the field each of the three times we playedthem, though we lost each game at the free throw line. The same was true of the number two teamin5-A. We also outscored them from the field, but they finally won by three points at the free throw line. In fact, we were defeated ten times at the line: once by one point with the winning goal scored with two seconds left in the game; three games were lost by three points, and three more by four points, and every time we had outscored our opponents from the field. Speaking of opponents ten of our losses were to teams rated in the top five in the State. Last spring our outlook for basketball was bright. True, all but one starter from last year's team were graduated, but we were to have Randy Renfroe, the one returning starter from that team. To go with him we were to have Roy Muth, the sixth man on last year's team and an excellent prospect; Larry Cunningham, an excellent shooter, was now eligible and would give us great help;Bryant Henderson, another fine athlete; and Tom Baresel, a 6'5 letterman, although he had not played much last year. Then, like a bolt of lightning out of the blue, tragedy struck. Muth moved away. Renfroe hurt his knee in football and was lost for basketball. Cunningham joined the Army. And Henderson was declared ineligible until second semester. So, before the season started we had lost four key players, each of whom could have made any team in the CKL and were All-State possibilities. Besides this, Melvin Moyer, a top reserve and prospective starter, broke his foot in the final football game and was lost for half the basketball season. That left us one letterman who had played very little the previous- year, two players from last year's B-team which had a mediocre record, one player who had half a season's play with the B-team, and a sophomore. What these young men lacked in experience and ability they made up for with a special kind of courage. They played what was probably the toughest schedule in the history of JCHS basketball, and held their own, although their 3 and 17 record doesn't show it. Next season should be a fine one for JCHS. The groundwork is laid with six returning letter-men, plus at least six other young men good enough to make a strong bid for a starting berth. They will have, atworst, a good chance to win CKL, something Junction City has not done since 1959. Best of luck, fellows. Although we did not achieve our goal of the league and state championships, we did have a good year. This year for the first time we had a Grand State tournament. To be involved in that tournament is one of the greatest emotional experiences that a high school wrestler can be involved in. We are sorry to see the five varsity seniors go, but we are looking forward to all of the experienced underclassmen returning next year. The whole wrestling program took a first place when we hosted the State tournament. Everyone did an outstanding job and made me proud to be the wrestling coach at JCHS. — Coach Ben Bennett 1. This years cross country team was the hardest working group of runners I've had at JCHS. Cross country demands a lot of effort and dedication and these young men displayed a great deal of this during the past season. As a team, we improved steadily each week until we reached our peak by winning first place at the McPherson Invitational. Illness to key runners hampered our performance in the CKL. We came a long way from season's beginning to the end. I had an opportunity to see the State girls' volleyball tournament held in Kansas City. It was won by Shawnee Mission South. Most of the teams who made it to State were outstanding teams — so we have our work cut out for us if we hope to be competitive for State competition. I feel that the girls had a desire to learn and win, always wanting to improve their game. The 1974 tennis team helped make my first coaching assignment a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. I am looking forward to having several of the girls back and wish the graduating seniors the best of luck. As to the future of the JCHS Girls Tennis team, it depends upon several things. We need younger members out every year and everyone playing every chance they get, year round, including tournaments. Junction City Blue Jay tracksters accomplished an exceptional feat this year by completing a regular outdoor schedule undefeated. The regular season was climaxed by capturing the first CKLtrack championship since 1964. However, the Blue Jays have won three state championships in 1969, 1971, and 1973. The season opened with the State Indoor Track Meet held in Manhattan on March 29. Blue Jays placed 4th in this meet and displayed the potential that developed during the outdoor season. Outstanding victories included winning the JC Invitational 104 to 99 over Topeka West in a thrilling down-to-the-wire finish. Another highlight was the team victory in the relay meet held at Hays. A rainy CKL meet was held at McPherson. Blue Jays posted an overwhelming victory of 10l| to 57 over CKL rival Manhattan. Individual honors were garnered by high-jumper Delvin Byrd beginning with the State Indoor where he set a new 4-A record and tied the all-time Indoor best. Delvin won first place in every meet he entered this year except the Kansas Relays. Delvin completed his high school career by winning the State 4-A championship and tying the 4-A record of 6 9 set by Randy Smith of McPherson in '70. COACH AL SIMPLER Also placing at the State Meet in Wichita was Melvin Moyer who finished fifth inthe low hurdles. Other participants were Keith Roesler in the mile run and Eddie Arveson in the 880 yard run. Blue Jay victories in 1975 were only accomplished by team effort and cooperation. Winning must always be unselfish endeavor and comes about when individuals are willing to sacrifice personal desires for the good of the team. This is the essence of the real man whether in high school athletics or later life. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Coach A1 Simpler 1) Bryan Phipps hands off to David Waggoner. 2) Bret Stevens running the quarter. 3) Lynn Smith leading the way. 4) Stacey Cooke showing his stamina in the two mile run. 5) Bryant Henderson and Steve Hammond finish 1st and 2nd in the 220 yard dash. 6) Melvin Moyer leaping over the hurdles. 7) Doug Dutchyshyn mentally getting ready for his event. 8) Granville Johnson ready to go. 9) Walter Sanders jumps high to get distance. 10) Ken Ross brings the baton in to David Gage. '♦ . I 8 k ffli v, Coacli’s Comments The 1975 girls track season was not a winning one but I feel that we did win a few battles. We bettered our times and distances every time we took the track. The young ladies who finished the season were a great bunch. Thanks to the seniors for the leadership shown, and good luck in the future. We also have several strong underclassmen returning to lead the 1976 track team to an even bigger and better year. Coach Donna Law Managers: Susan Steinfort, Robbie Brown; Assistant Coach: Mr. Rains. TENNIS 1975 Varsity Front row: Tim McCandless, Kevin Kitchens, George Geczy; Back row: John McRae, Tim Lee, Bruce Scott. Coach’s Comments This proved to be one of the most enjoyable coaching experiences I have ever had. There was considerable competition on the team for the six varsity positions much of the season. We had seven lettermen this year and four of them will be back next year. The Senior lettermen were John McRae, Tim Lee, and Kevin Kitchens. The four returning lettermen are George Geczy, Bruce Scott, Tim McCandless, and Scott Deam. The biggest disappointment this season was not doing better at the Emporia regional, but I'm looking forward to next year already with optimism. Coach’s Comments Needless to say I am extremely proud of our golf team this year. Nine boys came out for this year's squad and all nine are to be commended. They had to compete not only against each other for qualifying, but against other schools who had from 20-30 boys out for golf. Golf is alifetime sport and is highly competitive. The highlights were: A. Witnessing a transition of a fair 4-man team to one of the best in the state. B. Placed second in the CKL being defeated out of first place by a total of three strokes. C. Winning CKL 4-man. D. Winning Regional 4-man (first ever for a Junction City 4-man team. E. Gaining state competition with our 4-man team. Keyboard students provided music for the Yuletide Festival and gave a recital at the end of each semester. On Saturday, February 2, Tom Baresel, Lesa Junghans, Gwen Kerby, Terina Shaffer, and Kim Snyder entered the State Piano Festival at Marymount College in Salina. Tom and Terina received top I ratings for which they won gold medals and certificates. Accompanists were very busy this year playing for vocalists and instrumentalists in recitals, State Music Festival, and the Say It With Music production of SHOWBOAT, as well as all the choral groups. On May 23, Tom Baresel gave a Senior Recital, performing in piano, organ, and voice. Mrs. Printz says, It has been a good year for improving keyboard performances; I'm hoping for more good years in the future. 1. Tom Baresel practices at the organ keyboard for his Senior Recital. 2. The ten principal characters in the musical were Jim Braly as Cap'n Andy, Carlena Lundeen as Parthy, Tom Baresel as Gaylord Ravenal, Charlotte Mathis as Magnolia, Lynda Carrier as Julie LaVeme, Randy Harrell as Steve, LeWan Alexander as Frank Schultz, Cheryl Petty as Ellie, Wynona Clardy as Queenie, and Norman Ford as Joe. The story revolved around the trials and tribulations of Gaylord and Magnolia's love affair and marriage. Parthy, the irrational mother of Magnolia, and wife of Cap'n Andy creates many problems for this simple river family. Soon after the story begins, it is discovered that Julie LaVeme, the lead performer on the show boat is half black. She and her husband, Steve, are forced to leave the boat because of a locaL law prohibiting miscegenation (marriage between blacks and whites). This was a heartbreaking experience for Julie's friend Magnolia, only to be followed years later by her husband's untimely and unannounced departure. Meanwhile, Gaylord had resumed his irresponsible way of life —gambling— which led to the desertion of wife Magnolia and daughter Kim. Coaxed by Ellie and Frank, old friends from the showboat, Magnolia sought a job at the Trocadero Music Hall where Julie happened to be starring. Julie, learning that her old friend needed a job, resigned so that she could have hers. As the play closed, Gaylord and Magnolia were reunited. Ellie and Frank have adopted a son who turned out to be a sensation in Hollywood. And like the Mississippi in Ole Man River, memories of Show Boat continue to just keep rolling along. . . we could make believe. •JCIIS Music Departments Say It With Music” Production (1) Foreground: JimBraly as CaptainAndy Hawks and Carlena Lun-deen as Parthy Ann, his wife. The faculty then votes on the four boys and four girls they feel have the other necessary qualities of leadership, knowledge of government, and motivation. The six boys with the most votes were selected as delegates. The ten girls with the most votes were asked to write a resume including all their activities and awards received through junior and senior high school. These ten resumes were judged by the Junction City American Legion Auxiliary, and two of the girls were named as delegates. The purpose of Boys' and Girls' State is to provide citizenship training for high school students and to inform them about the duties, privileges, responsibilities, and rights of American citizens.
