Those returning lettermen were Seniors Doug Johnson and Paul Crank, and Junior Stacey Cooke. This relatively inexperienced team found the competition to be quite tough, especially in the early part of the season. The highlight of the season had to be the CKL meet when the team of Doug Johnson, Gary Heller, Stacey Cooke, Keith Roesler, Paul Crank, Harold Cline, and Jim Jelinek brought home the second place trophy for JCHS. In the regionals at Hays the following week, all of the Varsity runners turned in their best times of the season, buttheteam still missed qualifying for the State meet by only two points. Doug Johnson paced the Blue Jays by placing third in the race and became our lone representative in the State meet at Salina. Doug closed out his Cross Country career at JCHS by going on to finish ninth in the 4-A State meet. This completed a very fine season for Doug, especially since he had been sick the first part of the season. I was quite pleased with the effort of the squad this year and am looking forward to next season. — Coach Schmoekel Stacey Cooke 7th in CKL HEAD COACH Robert Schmoekel 116 Season Record 19 Newton Emporia J C Invitational Chapman Salina Invitational Rained Out 1st 2nd 1st 3rd Coach’s Comments With this being only the second year of full competition for the team, I felt that their performance was indeed outstanding. Coach Ben Bennett Coach’s Comments The 1973-74 wrestling season started out slow due to the short time we had for practice prior to the first match. The strong finish with so many young wrestlers has to be one of the most rewarding experiences in coaching. This team did not give up or quit when they were down. They kept working and improving despite several disappointing losses and they responded to the early defeats with a positive and competitive attitude. This team showed character and gained the respect of all the other schools in this area for their strong season finish. The school and community should be proud of these young men. Coach’s Comments The 1973 football season was one of the shortest and one of the most enjoyable of my 25 years of coaching experience. Short, because the team as a whole was ready and eager to learn and was possessed with the burning desire to win. Consequently, the days and weeks seemed to rush past all too quickly. Enjoyable, because we could feel the refreshing enthusiasm of our young men, and we found great pleasure in seeing them develop as individuals and as a team. The 1973 team almost went all the way — the hard way. We played both the regional and the championship games on the road and against many odds. It is our hope that the Seniors have learned, through football, the importance of courage, determination, and fair play as they face the future. Also, we hope the underclassmen have seen the values of dedication, persever- ance, and knowledge when mixed with desire and team effort. A great challenge lies ahead for all. It has been an honor to coach the 1973 team. We thank each player for that opportunity. It is our prayer that God may bless each young man’s life as he has blessed our team during the season. I could not leave this successful football season without a word of praise for our coaching staff. Whereas most of the teams we play have staffs of from six to ten members, our staff of four, through dedication and desire to do the best for our players, spent many extra hours in preparation. My thanks and appreciation is extended to Coach Bennett, Coach Noble, and Coach Dee Simpler. JCHS can be proud of a job well done by the 1973 Blue Jay football team. — Coach A1 Simpler 126 Head Coach A1 Simpler The five trophies won by the 1973 Blue Jay Football team are the Silver Football Sportsmanship Trophy, District Championship State Runner-up, Regional Championship, and Central Kansas League Championship (tie). Boys and Grirls State Junction City Senior High delegates attended Boys State and Girls State in the Summer of 1973. They were sponsored by the American Legion and its Auxiliary. The students attended conferences for one week, learning many of the fundamental workings of our government. They were able to run for city, state and county offices, and learn and experience how these officials carry out their duties. These representatives from Junction City formed many lasting friendships with other students, as well as learning how our government operates. During her stayinthe United States, Regina is residing with the Mark Endsley's. Born August 29, 1956, Regina participates in many extra curricular activities. She is a member of AFS, Student Council, Camera Club, Wrestlerettes, Kayettes, and an honorary member of Pep Club. In her free time, Regina enjoys reading, writing letters to friends in Switzerland, playing her guitar, taking pictures, walking in the country, and listening to all kinds of music. One of the main differences between life in Junction City compared to Luganl is dating. Group dating is the custom in Switzerland whereas couples are seldom seen alone unless they are dating steadily. After returning to Switzerland, Regina will have one more year before her graduation. Her future plans include traveling to England and studying nursing or political science. Organizations Candids We're BIG, B-I-G!! How about a date Saturday ? 188 No, thanks. You're not my type. I Wasn't cheating, honest!! Did you hear about . . . Student Council President Jo Anne Wesley led JCHS Student Council in 1973-74 and succeeded in getting hard work from its members. Stuco sponsored the Homecoming activities this year and, due to its efforts, that week was a success. ’’Solution” provided the music at the dance which was well attended. They also decorated the halls of JCHS at Christmas time, and worked on many innovations aimed at giving us a better school. Stuco also made it possible this year to have a juke box. This leaves a lot of excitement for the years to come. The Student Council cons is ted of Terri Stanes ic, JimTearse, Melinda Hoyle, Teresa Coates, Margie Kitchens, Doug Johnson, Martha George, Angie Magcalas, Lynn Rutt, Lonnie Callier, Lendora Williams, Susan Koonce, Regina Iten, Charles Collins, Fredia Byers, Denise Galliher, Debbie Matthews, Julie Davis, Steve Ruhnke, Jim Bra-ley, and Kyle Smith. Sponsors were Mr. Donald Hettinger and Mr. Donald Kracht. Stuco provided the necessary strength to become the backbone of the student body, and guided the students through a memorable school year. Jo Anne Wesley, Student Council President. Mr. Kracht and Mr. Hettinger, Student Council Sponsors. As the 1973-74 school year ends, this book and its pages become only a reminder of the good times we have enjoyed at JCHS. Our memories shared together will be cherished in the years to come. The students and faculty have helped to make this a pleasant and fulfilling year. Time went so fast as the Pow Wow staff put in many hours and hard effort. A lot of thanks goes to them, and to Mrs. Hill, our advisor. She surely helped us beyond all thanks. Special thanks also to the photographers, both on the Pow Wow and Blue Jay staffs, plus some outside help; because without their hard work and talent, and the time they were willing to give, our yearbook would not have been possible. —Becky Bartlett, Editor —Anna Law, Assistant Editor Abbott, Bryce 92,151 Abel, Van 38, ,178,186 Acosta, Ilona 105 Adams, Emma 92 Alcorta, Linda 38,158 Alexander, Jimmie 38 Allen, Anna Allison, Dawn 76,152 153,177 Alvis, Jerry 76 Anderson, Diana 76,187 Anderson, Jeri 92 Apfel, Victoria 92,185 Apperson, Amy 92,171 176 Apperson, Melissa t 92,177 184 Apple'gate, Donna 76 Aragon, Michele 105 Aragon, Michael Archer, Deborah 76,90 Archer, Rebecca 92 Armour, Charles 38,186 184 Arroyo, John 92 Artzner, Lawrence 92 Arveson, Edward 92 Ascher, Dennis 76 Atkinson, Michael 38 Atkinson, Robert 76 Augustine, Ed 76 Bacani, Franciss 76 Bacani, Mary 92 Bachand, Carl 105 Bahre, Susan 38,: 149,151 180,182 Baker, Bruce 105 Baker, Franklin 76,126 131,149,151,178,183 Baldwin, Tammy 92 Ballard, Thomas 92 Ballew, Freddie 77 Baresel, Thomas 77,126 133,138,140,149,151,155 Barefield, Curtis 77 Barham, Terri 92,105 Barker, Don 77 Bartlett, Rebecca 39,168 181,182 Baskette, Deborah 92,149 184 Bateman, Curt 120 Bates, Gleena Bauer, Harvey 77,114 Bauerband, Stephen 39,178 Beavers, Kathy 92 Beck, Annette Beck, Susan 77 Beckman, Mary 92,160 Index 171,177,185 Bell, George 92 Bennett, Randall 63,171 Bennett, Steven 77,126 131,138,140,142 Bergmann, Inge 77 Berk, Diana 92 Berry, Bob 92 Berry, Charmaine 90 Berry, Janice 77 Berry, Malinda 77 Best, Jimmie 90 Bevan, Susan 77 Biggs, Rose 93,158,177 Birkhead, Karin 93 Birge, Barbara 93 Birge, Beverly 77 Bischoff, Gretchen 39 Bivens, Jimmy 77,187 Blackburn, Michael 77 Blackburn, Mitchell 77 Blackburn, Steven 39 Blackwell, George 93 Blair, Phyllis Bliss, James 39, 120,125, 126, 127,130, 164, 169 Blitch, Joette Board, JoAnn 90,93,180 Board, Karen 77,153 Bobbitt, Ida 39 Bogen, David 93 Bolen, Denise 77 Bolen, Richard 93 Book, Sandra 77 Bonner, Johnny 93 Bowers, Regina 93 Boyer, Donald 39 Braden, Jeffrey 93 Braden, Steven 93,171 Bradshaw, Denise 93 Brainard, David 93 Braly, James 90,174 Brannan, Ronald 93,107 Breese, Vickie 40 Brent, Holly 77 Brewer, Scott 93,177,181 Brigance, Charles 60 Briggs, Richard 77,141, 138,142 Bright, Penny 93 Brouillette, Darlene 77 Brouillette, Kim 93 Brown, Arthur Brown, Larry 77 Brown, Andrea 93,180 Brown, Laura 93 Brown, Mark Brown, Pamela 93,149, 177 Brown, Rickey Brown, Roberta 77, 180, 90 Brown, Ronnie Brown, Sheila 77,187 Bruce, Cary 77 Brumbaugh, Beverly 40 Buchanan, Tracey 94,181 Buchenau, Dale Buchenau, Lawerence Buchwald, Donald 60 Buchwald, Lucille 77,182 Buell, Sheryl 40,183,187 Bunker, Matthew 77 Burch, Bernice 77,118, 181,182 Burch, Ilona 94 Burch, June Burdett, Deborah 94,149 Burleson, Quinn 94, 149, Burnett, Mary 182 Bums, Robert 94 Bush, Carol 40,23,174 Bush, Tim 77 Butler, Eva 94,181 Byers, Charles 94,120, 121 Byers, Fredia 40,176, 181,183,184 Byrd, Delvin 77 Byrd, Wanda 40 Byrne, Lynnette 78,90 Cagle, John 94 Caldwell, Jimmie 105, 120,121 Calhoun, Yong 94 Cali, Jeffrey 94 Callier, Lonnie 78 Callier, Rosalyn 40,154, 180 Campbell, Donald 60 Cantrell, Malia 94,149 Cantu, Rene Cardone, John 94 Carlton, Linda 78 Carlton, Peter 40 Carney, Leslie 78,154 Carpenter, Daniel 78 Carr, Lloyd 94 Carrier, Lynda 78,155, 176,177,180,181 Carson, George 158 Carter, James 94 Carter, Tracy 94,120, 121,126 Case, Anita 40,180,183 Case, Bruce 78,126,132, 183,185 Case, Diana 94,151 Cassity.
