Since we are the last class to be graduated from this building, we are including many ot those things that we will not want to forget. During the last six years, we have had many experiences that stand out in our memories. There has been the'excitement of football games, basket- ball games, and other sports. There has been the thrill of class parties, dances, and proms. There has been the fun of presenting assembly programs and class plays. There has been the joy of participating in musical productions. There has been the con- stant striving for a better academic understanding, and the accomplishment of achieving a higher scholastic standing and of learning to live with other people. It is to the memories of our life in I. C. H. S. that we dedicate this 1958 POW WOW. Miss Helen Torgeson Mr. E. R. Dailey ...4- Faculty' No door in I .C.H.S. holds so many different memories for students. Through it we have gone into the office for various reasons: excuses, drop slips, tardy ex- cuses. class schedules, tickets, phone calls, and supplies. This door also led the way to friendly chats with Mr. Karas. . kg...y. '- , gs .5 .Rr 2 , rf ft P' 1 Mr. D. A. McConnell, Superintendent Mr. D. A. McConnell came to Junction City as Superintendent of Schools in 1939. He is recog- nized as an outstanding educational leader in this community as well as in the state of Kansas. He has taken a very active part in community service and in church activities. Most of all we remember his work as chairman of the Junction City Chapter of the American Red Cross. During these 18 years, five elementary schools have been built and new high school is under con- struction. All this has taken hours of planning, and working with the architects and contractors, but for Mr. McConnell it has meant an opportunity to pro- vide additional educational opportunities for the youth of our community. In our busy school life, we take so many things for granted. However, we do appreciate all the time and consideration that our Board of Education has given to make this a better school system. Board of Education-Mr. H. H. Brown, Mr. B. J. Filbyp Dr. G. W. Grammerg Dr. L. P. Bunker, president: Miss Doris Stande- ter, clerkp Mr. Lee Hornbaker, vice president, Mrs. John Chan- ey, Mr. D. A. McConnell, superintendent. 5. ....s. L...-.-1 .5- I Mr. Karns gives some instructions to his secretaries, Donna Schmutz and Ruth Wiley. A i - as A Mr. H. D. Karns, Principal When Mr. H. D. Karns became the Prinicpal oi the Iunior-Senior High School in 1941, there were 29 teachers and 727 students. Our school has grown until this year we have 51 teachers and over 1200 students have been enrolled. In addition to the increasing school load, Mr. Karns has been active in local church and community affairs. He has also held offices in the State and National Education- al Associations. We remember his words of advice, encourage- ment, and even those which showed us our mistakes and how to overcome them. Mr. Karas has always had time to talk to us individually just as he has done for the other 2000 who have been graduated under him. ..7.. Mrs. Sue Carol Brunner Mrs' Maw Ruth Carter Enslish English Faculty Our faculty has been increased by ten teach- ers this year. This is because all seventh grades are in our building and all the other classes have an increased enrollment. Since all the seventh through twelfth graders from Fort Riley attend our school, there are a great many students dropping out and others entering during the year. We maintain a con- stant enrollment of about twelve hundred students. The large room on third floor that has been used for visual education and as a lunch room had to be divided into three class rooms. A class room Mrs. Vera Russell English English Mrs. Claribel Costello Mr. John Ieffries English English, .lournalism was also made out of part of the industrial arts room. Although every available space is being used, sev- eral teachers do not have a definite room assigned to them but must teach in a different room each hour. The regular school day begins at 8:10 a. m. and ends at 3216 p. rn. This new schedule pro- vides for six class periods each day. The fifth hour home room period has been eliminated. Announce- ments are made during the fifth hourp and when necessary, a short home room period is held at one o'clock. Study halls are provided in the cafeteria and the library. Every student is enrolled in at least four subjects and gym and may take vocal or instrumental music. The other period is spent in one of the study halls. All school activities are held immediately after the class sessions. Miss M617 Louise 500310111 Mrs. Opal Shellhaas Mrs. Sandra Singer English English -3- Miss Sharon Townsend Miss Ruth Bell English Spanish, English Several new courses have been added to the curriculum. Speech correction is offered to those who need it. Remedial reading is proving beneficial to those junior high students who have taken ad- vantage ot that class. A course in health is available to both junior and senior high school students. Many have taken advantage of this course because they know that it will soon be required for gradua- tion. Since there is no class room available, the health classes are being taught in the auditorium. A portable screen has been provided for the visual education department. Movies and slides are now shown in the individual class rooms. The faculty, as well as the student body, is looking forward to the new high school. However, this is a vear that we will never forget nor regret. Mr. Charles G. Fiffc Drivers Education, Coach Mr. George C. Madelen Social Science, Coach Mrs. Pauline Olive! The guests were seated under the lanterns and looked out toward Mt. Fuji during the program. The prophecy was read from a long scroll by John York, dressed a Confucius. A gift was presented Miss Bignall by Jeanette Cott in appreciation of the work she did in rnakingthe Prom B success. The Iimmy Iarnes Band provided the music for the dancing. Refreshments were served throughout the evening. The class of 58 was the first to have all- night entertainment on prom night. A movie, The Designing Woman, was shown at the Kaw Theater at 12:30 a.m. Alter the show a delicious breakfast was prepared and served at the high school cafe- teria bythe Lions Club with Mr. Karns as head chef. Sleepy goodbys climaxed a wonderful evening as the Iunior-Senior Prom of 1957 drew to a close. Guests choose interesting Oriental food from a table in front of the garden wall overlooking the sea. We did not think when we started in the seventh grade that we would be the last class to graduate from this bulding. We have had a very busy time and will carry many memories with us. We remember how thrilled we were when our seventh grade float, The Little Blue Engine, took first place in the Homecoming parade of 1953. The next year we were busy in Kayettes, Senate, Kays, sports, and other activities. We were begin- ning to feel that we belonged in the big school. We still remember how lowly we felt as we were forced to bow to the Class of SS on Senior- Freshman Day, we were the last freshman class to be initiated. We soon forgot our shame as we became busy with class activities. We chose our Freshman leaders! Fred Perry, President, John Montgomery and Vicki Vormehr, vice-presidents, Deanna Tressin, secretary, and Judi Schmedemann, treasurer. Other leaders from our class were Mary Anderson, Senate president, Brenda Odle, Kayette president, Fred Perry, Kay president. Our school sent a Freshman debate team com- posed of Marilyn Haugen and Mary Anderson to the regionals. Four of our class members were elec- ted as junior high cheer leaders. They were Vicki Vormehr, head cheerleader, Judi Schmedemann, Jan Montgomery, and Sandi McFerron. We partici- pated in the Yuletide Festival and the Junior High Operetta. Finally we reached senior high, and as Sopho- mores we became a real part of J.C.H.S. Our officers were George Gardner, president, Janette Ritter, vice presiden Marilyn Haugen, secretary, and Joanne Minnick, treasurer. Jeanette Cott served as Latin Club president, and Tom Burnham led the Spanish Club. We showed our musical talent in the A Cappella choir, the band and the triple trio. Vicki Vormehr was the only Sophomore on the varsity cheerlead- ing squad. Our Junior year proved to be our busiest. Jean ette Cott, president, Larry Clark, Vice president, Mary Anderson, secretary, and Doris Zernickow, treasurer led us though a wonderful year high- lighted by our beautiful prom, Far East Fantasy . We showed our originality by following the dance with a movie and breakfast honoring the seniors of 1957. This night will be one of our most cherish- ed memories. Vicki Vormehr headed the Senior High cheer ing squad. Other Junior cheerleaders were Jan Mont - gomery and Judi Schmedemann. Martha Giese led the Ushers Club. We will remember the hard work and fun when we presented our Junior Class play, The Little Dog Laughed, which was directed by Miss Dorothy Schmiedeler. Our musical abilities were never idle as we, again participated in the Band Concert, the Yule- tids Festival, and Say It With Music. We won't forget the thrill of being Seniors at last and yet so quickly. Class officers were Larry Clark, president, Vicki Vormehr, vice president Deanna Tressin, secretary, and Mary Anderson, treasurer. Vicki Vormehr, Judi Schmedemann, and Jan Montgomery led our cheering section. Judi Schmedemann was crowned Homecoming Queen, Mary Anderson, Marilyn Haugen, Brenda Odle, and Vicki Vormehr were the attendants. Jan Montgomery and George Gardner were King and Queen of Hearts, their Royal Court consisted of Annette Basgall, Bobbie Coen, Janette Ritter, Doris Zernickow, Tom Burnham, Larry Clark, Jerry Mathes, and Fred Perry. We worked hard to present our Senior play, Sabrina Fair. Seniors successfully leading organ- izations were Ianette Ritter, Senior Kayette presi- dent, Joanne Minnick, president of the Ushers Club, and F.F.A. president, Phillip Edwards. For the first time in ten years a girl, Marilyn Haugen, was elected president of the Student Council. Girl Staters were Jeanette Cott and Doris Zernickow. D. A. R. representative was Mary Anderson. Too soon we were busy ordering announce- ments and finally measuring for caps and gowns. None of us will forget the solemnity of Baccalaureate as we finally realized that our last year was quickly coming to a close. Then, as we walked across the stage to receive our diplomas, we felt a sudden sadness for we knew this would be our last min- utes as students of J. C. H. S, the school that will always hold a very warm spot in our hearts no mat- ter where we go. 133.- The entrance to Fegan Field and the ticket booth. The class of 1900 placed mementos in a box and buried it on our campus. In the spring of 1950, eight members of that class returned to the campus for a reunion. The rock was moved and buried treasure dug up. A Blue lay, a Pow Wow, and other mementos from the class of 1950 were added and the box sealed in cement. A new rock was inscrib- ed with the numerals of the class and will remain until that class has its reunion in 2000. 4.- NE, X . ,, ff it 'B 5? f-sa f tn 15? However, there are other activities that seem almost as important at times: choosing class rings and raising money for the Prom. Popcorn, candy, pop, hot dogs is the cry heard as luniors go through the football bleachers during a game. You just know that someone is in the cafeteria cooking hot dogs by the dozen. Each Junior was given ten tickets to sell for the play, My Three Angles, which was a wonderful sucess. Several weeks before the Christmas vacation, Miss Bignall's room was full ot boxes of candy. The candy was so good that it practically sold itseltg in fact, a reorder was necessary. The work on the Prom then began. Committees appointed were forthe theme, the decorations, the invitations, and the favors. Many themes were suggested, discussed, and discarded. After a theme was agreed upon, the hardest job was to keepit asecret until the night of the Prom. Those last weeks in April and the tirst in May were hectic, but fun. The climax-a beautiful gym, a wonderful night. ' a . Q.. X il ' 8 ., ,, y i 13 9... it . N QQ Juniors-Top Row: Martin Meyers, Herman Lewis, Lanny Morris, Patrick Stoll. W Iunior Kays The Iunior Kays have made donations to the Red Cross, Meals for Millions and to the Salvation Army. A familiar sight in the halls after school is the candy stand which is run by the Iunior Kays. In 1929 the Iunior Hi-Y had two new sponsors just out of college! Victor Clough and Edmond Dailey. The biggest problem of the Hi-Y was money, so the sponsors hit on the idea of selling candy in the halls. Mr. Ierry Vineyard, Principal, okayed the idea. The first stand used was two twelve-inch boards set on two sawhorses. There was a certain amount of loss by sticky fingers, so the boards were nailed together and a cover of glass built over them. It was still placed on the sawhorses and the candy stored in a large wooden box. Setting up the stand took a lot of time, so Mr. Dailey had Mr. Noble Patterson draw up plans for a stand to be built on rubber-tire wheels. The cost of this stand was thought to be too great so it was drop- ped temporarily. These two sponsors were together until 1940 when Mr. Dailey was called into the Army. In 1942 Mr. Clough left and for a time the stand was run by Mr. Lloyd Milleson. In 1945 Mr. Dailey retired from the Army and returned to his former position. Since he was the only sponsor at the time, he went ahead with his plans for the new stand. Each boy in the Ir. Kays has a chance to work for one week at the stand with his pay being a 5c candy bar each night. The profits from the candy stand are returned to the school in worth-while projects. Some of these projects are a hand press for the printing shop, electronic flash for the Pow Wow, robes for the A Cappella Choir, helping buy an electric clock for basketball and football score boards, a record player and amplifier. Ahelpful angel comes down from The roof just before Leslie reads the Dear lane letter. 'lMy Three Angels is the story of three convicts, portrayed by Dennis Talley, Dick Weber, and Bill Cunningham, who become the good angels of a sadly harrassed household. The scene is French Guiana, the time is Christmas day. The Angels are employed as roofers by the Ducotel family, composed of Larry Marston, Elvina Morse, and Leslie Coover. From France comes a snarling cousin, played by Lenace Prudhomrne, to oust Papa from the business he has established. Along with the cousin is a cold- blooded nephew, Bob Edler, who is jilting Papa's daughter for an heiress. The three convicts have sunny natures, clever hands, and sleepless brains. They set matters right in a gay story where it is simpler to bump off the cousin than to convert him. Margueritte Wysong and Roy Breneman add comedy to the already humorous story. The play was directed by Miss Sharon Townsend. Sylvia Brase was the student director, and Nellie Daniels was business manager. The purpose of this program is to teach the boys the fundamental rules of football, good sportsmanship, team cooper- ation, and to offer team competition. In order to accomplish this purpose, the boys practiced every night after school. They had been provided with adequate uniforms and played inter- squad games. Ns., as W The 1957-58 edition ofthe Blue lay Varsity compiled one of the finest records in recent ICHS history. The A team, coached by Charles Fitfe tor the seventh year, finished second in the Central Kansas League and handed the champion Manhat- tan Indians their only league loss. The A team finished the regular season with a league record of 10 wins and 2 losses. The' B team, under the guidance of Bill Hill, simply overpowered most oi their opponents. Their only loss came at the hands of Salina in an early season encounter after which the Bees won 12 consecutive victories finishing the season with a record ot 15 wins and one loss. Seven Seniors played their last season of Blue I ay basketball, tour of them starters. The opening tip-off usually found Charles Smith, lerry Smith, Steve Rathert, George Gardner and Junior loe Beverly on the floor. Senior Tom Burnham also started several games. Senior reserves who saw a lot of action included Larry Clark and Everett Davis. Charles Smith led all CKL scorers with an average ot 18 points per game and climaxed a line career by being named to the All-State squad. lerry Smith and I oe Beverly received honorable mention on the All- State team. All three boys were named to the All- CKL team. ln addition, Charles Smith and loe Beverly gained two of the tive positions on the North Central Kansas All-Star team. lerry Smith was ac- corded honorable mention on this selection. -104-- A X V , Q f f George Gardner Jerry smith The Blue lays offered a sharpshooting offensive attack with a high percentage of accuracy coupled with a stingy defense which proved to be the beat in the league. One of the brightest features of the year was the rebounding of the Jays. Although not a tall team, George Gardner at 6-3 being the tallest starter, Junction City consistently outhustled the opposition on the boards. loe Beverly, who finish- ed second in the league in rebounding, led the Blue lays with able support from George Gardner, Tom Burnham and Steve Rathert. Charles Smith and Ierry Smith proved to be two ball-hawking guards causing many a pass to go astray. The Junction City B team with their out- standing performance, gave promise of continued success for the blue-clad roundballers. The Junior lays displayed a well-balanced attack with emphasis on hustle. Seeing the most action for the Bees were Lenace Prudhomme, Gary Smith, Ron Hammond, Elbert King, Roy Breneman, and Steve Brown. All of these boys saw action with the A team from time to time, as well. 1957-58 was a great basketball year for Junction City and a fitting one as the Blue lays played their 29th final season of high school basketball in the present gym. The final record of 13 wins and 3 defeats is certainly one of which the school, the squad, and the coaches can be most proud. . f 3' Lonaco Prudhomme B Team-Top Row: Lenace Prudhomme, Gary Smith, Roy Breneman, John Cowart, Ronald Hammond, Doug Sodgg. strom, Mr. Hill.
