R ichard Crocker With the closing of the school year, students and faculty look forward to a change of scene, whether it be only for a few months or a com- pletely different aspect of activity. In I.C.H.S., as in schools across the nation, this climax of the academic year affects a large number of people. Seniors find themselves onthe threshold of a new life,a culmination of ideas and influen- :es that grewfrom highschool experiences and acquainances. So wrote Roger Shepherd in the last issue of the BLUE IAY that he sponsored. As we go into the world after four eventful years of high school, many experiences and highlights will be placed in a cubical of mem- ories. Gary G. Anderson Bobby Ashley Boyd Avery Harry I. Dupre Judith Durbon A s Freshmen we were initiated by the mighty Seniors of 1953. At this time we were thought to be the lowest form of life and the mighty Sen- iors reigned supreme. You could never recog- nize us in the state we were in. We were simply covered with lipstick, and what a ffgooie mess was in our hair. Not only that, but we had to wear clothes wrong side out and backwards. The best part of the ceremony was cleaning the 1 and the weiner roast thatfollowed. We had loads of fun on that day! Most of us studiedg some even made the honor roll. Many of us placedfor state scholar- ship awards. Using oiu' dramatic and musical talents, we put on the junior High Operetta, Belle of Bagdad, under the direction of Philip Crow. Those who had leads were Iudy Stark, Rodney Craft, Don Hampton, Nyla Neilson,Cyn- thia Ziegler, and jane Carr. Miss Helen Hauge helped us produce the play, G ood Night Caro- line, with the cast including Leah Palm, Robert Iott, Nyla Nielsen and Rodney Craft. As Freshmen a number of us held offices in junior High organizations. Our class president was David Junghans. Don Hampton was Vice president, Cynthia Ziegler was secretary, and the treasurer was Rodney Craft. The next year our confidence grew and we gained more social recognition in the school activities. Our boys started in Senior High sports and began their way to stardom. A few of these were Gordon MacLaird,Art McKenna, RussellGaston, EarlHaytor, Ron Henry, Harold Heaberlin, Larry Dowdell, Vincent Driski, jack Murrison, jack Hall, Allen Irwin, and joe Hudley. In the Senior High operetta, The Mikado, Rodney Craft played the part of the Mikado. The play we produced, The Happy Journey, was under the directicn of David Cropp. The cast included Harold Heaberlin, Sally Shellhaas, Richard Crocker, Bev Wells, Bob Patterson, and Caroline Smith. In the spring of that year we were accorded the privilege of taking down the decorations and cleaning the gym after the Junior -Senior Prom. For our leaders, we chose Harold Heaberlin as presidentg Russell Gaston, vice president, Carol Karns, secretaryg and Judy Olson as treasurer. During the summer we rested and decided what we were going to do the next year. Why, we had only two years left--such a short time to accomplish all we had to do! -15- Being measured for the Big Day when we receive our caps and gowns. jane Carr measures Les Duncang her assistant, Linda Weaver, takes names. The oper- etta, H.M.S. Pinafore, was under the direction of Charles Neal. Willie Spencer, Mickey Stew- art, Bob Patterson, judy Stark, Rodney Craft, and Harold Heaberlin were in the cast. Nine Girls was a mystery play. This was quite different from other plays that had been put on in our high school and was under the direction of Robert Kessler. The nine girls were Connie Neddo, Bev Wells, Barb McKinnon, Ann Mc- Millin, Carolyn Huber, Wilma Woodruff, Judy Diubon, Peggy Schippert, Marilyn Taylor, and Lois Swart. A debate club was organized byjoseph Merr- itt, one of our faculty members. As juniors, those who took part were Sally Shellhaas, Chan Duryea, Lee Quisenberry, and Fred Ritter . Those taking constitution went to Topeka to visit the Kansas Senate and House of Represen- tatives. The trip was fun as well as educational and gave us a better understandingof our state government. The high-light of om' junior year was the prom, with its theme Evening in Paris . All of us put in many long hard hours of work and worry into the decorations, food, and program. .ay . But we worked the hardest trying toconceal the theme from the Seniors. We had replicas of the Effiel tower ,Arc de Triumphe and other land- marks of Paris. Our program centered about the dancing of famous Parisian Can-Can Girls of the Moulen Rouge. Our guests, the Seniors, sat at sidewalk cafe tables and listened and danced to the music of jimmy james Band. The year 1955-56 was full of activity. We are Seniors at last. The sports stars--Russell Gaston, jack Hall, Allen Irwin, Vincent Driski, joe Hudley, and Harold Heaberlin--have played outstandingly in their sport fields. We have a high percentage on the honor roll. Because of outstanding scholastic ability, a number have been offered scholarships to use in the colleges of their choice. We have put out a good school paper, The Blue jay which carries all impor- tant school news. Of course our POW WOW is the best everg at least that is what Miss Torge- son, our sponsor, says. The following are the clubs in which we have a Senior as president: Dramatics, Judy Durbong Pep Club, Peggy Schippertg Kayettes, jane Carrg I Club, Russell Gastong Kays, jack Hallg Ushers, Roy Colemeng Student Coimcil, Don Hampton. -19- hd -.4-I 1 LD pl..- y N., 1 . . ., . k 41, gi. -, . ., ,,., , ffnyf yisfc is iam 7i' 1-qu-nur' if .X 'Sli-0' I , L, ,a,w?3g.?L':, f my ,if fifff ,iid':f!5i -3' 'Qi f- me .W 'L -f.. wus!! l iff' Q. We are glad to have had these along with the classes we have atten- ded, the studying we have done, and the plans we have made for the future. Though we are leaving this school, its desks, our books, and the teachers,we are taking with us the pleasant and unpleasant memories, the joys and sorrows, and the knowledge we have acquired here. We wish to thank the teachers for the help, patience and endurance they have shown toward us. Although we may not seem to have appreciated it, we really do. As we approach the door of the future and enter through the portals of adulthood, we look backand think, I am what I made me, but only with the help of, oh, so many others. Againwe say Thank you to everyone for everything that has been done for us, the Senior Class of 1956. However, each and every student will become a voting citizen with a duty to perform. There are courses to educate the student in United States government, its policies and practices, but activities also play a great part in this educaion. The Student Council and Junior High Senate, for example, offer good practical experience in self-goverm ment. The Kays and Kayettes are simi- lar to civic clubs in function and construction. Through educational and practical experience, the students be- come citizens of tomorrow. Junction City High School students have always had high scholastic stand- ings and have brought honor to the school many times. These honors prove that, through education and informa- tion, our High School is doing its part in making responsible citizens. Pow Wow tail POW WOW STAFF Mr. E. R. From then on, Miss Bignal and the juniors were always atwork. The program, favors, refreshment, and decoration committees all had part in the preparation. Work began in earnest about nine days before the Prom. The juniors worked feverishly and converted the gymnasium into a beautiful ballroom. The guests entered through the Arc de Triumph, on that Hbig night. The Eiffel Tower was directly across the dance floor with a flower garden behind. A sparkling fountain bubbled gaily and there was asidewalk cafe. The orchestra, which furnished music for dancing, was placed at one endof the room. At the opposite endwas the refreshmenttable which was very popularg Mrs. Haun and the committee had prepared delicious refreshments. The program included many features with a decidedlyFrench accent.
