The Pow Wow Staff has 28 members with Miss Helen Torgeson as the sponsor. This is Miss Torgeson's first time as sponsor of the Pow Wow. The entire Pow Wow will be printed out- side the school for the first time in many years. The Clay Center Engraving Company Wow has the contract for engraving and printing the Pow Wow. Mr. Don Wilson, proprietor, has given us much valuable aid. The Staff and sponsor have worked dili- gently to turn out a yearbook which will be of great interest to you, and which will give a true picture of JHS. Long hours of prepa- ration have been put forth. We of the Pow Wow Staff hope that you will enjoy your yearbook, THE POW WOW. I was very worried about what the JCHS class of '53 would do to me, so I persuaded Father Time to give me a slight preview through his time machine. I'll brace myself while he turns the dials. At first the view was hazy, but after switching to another channel we were ready to go. In January the team of Collins fPeggyl and Colver CCharlesl danced its way into the hearts of the New Yorkers. In the more serious side of entertainment Carolyn Craft and Shirley Myers competed for top billing KW? at the Met. Jerry Lewis was named professor at Harvard University, taking Ein- stein's place, while Madame Janice Curie Law was also added to the faculty for her brilliant contributions to the science world. Joe Puett became dean of Georgia Tech and Phyllis Walker took over the role of K State dean. Harvey Olson brings many of his prob- lems to her-he's still working his way through. J 57,0065-all .. lr T 2694 0,u.Uz4wLu-eh, manhattan One of thc highlights in the 1952 grid season was the impressive win over a massive Manhattan squad with a score of 19 to 13. The rough and tumble game drew many spectators to view an intense old rivalry between the two towns. The Blue Jays commanded the entire first half, stunning the Manhattan squad and leading 19-0. Manhattan's size began to show as they bullied over two touch- downs before the final gun sounded. The win marked the first time the Blue Jays have come into possession ol' the Football Trophy in four years. The all-star team announced by Bill Burke, sports writer for the Salina Journal, was selected on the basis of recommendations of coaches, sports writers, and football fans in the Kansas area. John .Miller was selected for the right guard position on the first team. Two more Jays rated second team berths. Ted Boone at right end, and Norman Brooks at quarterback. Miller, Boone, and Brooks are all seniors. Four more Jays won hon- orable mention, Willie Hammond at end, Ronnie Corvell at tackle. Cleo Stotts at center. and Joel McGill in the backfield. Behind every ball club there is a certain indi- vidual that never gets the recognition he deserves. Tom Shicktanz, JCHS manager for the 1952 foot- ball season, was probably one of the hardest work- ers behind the team. Tom is a senior this year. 61 .9 '4,1ln,6FLeI3uak Concordia ....... ....,.. 2 6 7 Emporia ...... .... 7 0 McPherson ..... ....... 2 5 6 Manhattan ..... .... 1 9 13 Clay Center .... ....... 2 7 6 Chapman ..,. .... 1 2 21 Salina ...,... .... 1 3 13 Marysville ..... .... 6 14 Dale Hartung Loren Richmond Ronnie Coryell Honorable Mention Kansas Area Ronnie Woods Captain Norman Brooks Quarterback Second Team Kansas Area Nick Chandler Kendall Spencer Alex Lee mo Qwihali John Miller James Smith Willie Hammond Right Guard Honorable Mention First Team Kansas Area Kansas Area ,. , , rm T F r an 1 A Teddy Boone Joel McGill Right End Honorable Mention Second Team Kansas Area Kansas Area -............. sg -4, N ' 'F Sa, Lebanon Arrington Charles Minnick LaVerne MacLaird f 71 I .y-qw-I i 5 Bmket Ba!! 9 ' ' V,. i V . ii Hoff J 1: -5- . . f fi 'V nys- i 1 2 2, M ,,,,m..:.
