The team of 1909 of the Junction City High School was one of the best ever produced by this school. They ran up a total of more than seventeen times as many scores as their opponents did. They played the representative teams of Central Kansas, and although beaten in one game, were strictly in the championship class. Two weeks after practice, Enterprise was easily defeated. The score while rather large, did not indicate much, as neither team was in tlrst class shape. One of the backficld positions and one side of the line were still unsettled. One week after the Enterprise game, Clay and Junction fought out a. draw on the home grounds. After this game the team settled down to a nice, smooth going machine. There is only one other game which needs mention here, and that is the Clay Center game at Clay-the only game in which we were scored on. Both sides were in good shape for the game and both expected to win after a hard struggle. Neither side scored in the iirst half, Junction outplaying Clay at every stage of the game. The ball was not in our territory once after the kick-off. Junction took the ball down the Held repeatedly, only to lose the gain in penalties or on downs. In the second half, Junction scored on a forward pass. The umpire refused to allow the score on a technicality. Greatly disap- pointed and protesting, the Junction team continued the game. While on a rapid go for another score time was called. Following are the season's scores and the members of the team: PLAYERS POSITION J. C. H.'S. OPPONENTS Strickland ...,.... .. Center 21 . Platt became known to football at Washburn College. While there he played on the two ever victorious teams of that institution, one of them winning the Missouri Valley chamwfon- ship in 1907. As a result of his splendid work on the Washburn eleven he was chosen as an All Missouri Valley tackle. Platt came to us in the fall of 1908, and with one or two veterans of the preced- ing year as a starter, he built up, considering everything, a fine team. This year, under a trifle more favorable conditions, he exceeded even his greatest hopes. We hope he may he able to pilot another winning temu. HIGH SCHOOL YEAR BOOK THE TRACK TEAM. After a discontinuance of three years' J. C. H. S. again took up track work this spring. Despite having suffered two defeats the season should be called a success, as with a lack of proper apparatus and practice, much fine material was developed. Next year Junction City will have one of the best track squads in the state. The players and scores are: March 19, at Chapman-D. C. H. S., 743 J. C. H. S., 39. April 15, at Clay Center-C. C. H. S., 845 J. C. H. S., 34. Webber, Lee, Hartman, E. Shane, W. Shane, Kovarlck, Hall, Hub- bard, Durrell, Bermant. THE 1 9 10 BASEBALL TEAM The 1910 team, while slow in developing, has brought into notice some of the best baseball material this school has ever had. Getting off with a poor start, the team picked up and showed good form in the following games: March 25-Abilene, 17, J. C. H. S., 2. April 2-D1 C. H. S., 143 J. C. H. S., 2. April 8--Enterprise, 03 J. C. H. S., 9. April 15-C. C. H. S., 63 J. C. H. S., 5. The players-Hall, c., Rathert, p.g Morris, lb., Kerr, 2b.g Reiber, s.s.g Lee, 3b . As coach of these two sports Hill has developed some good men this spring. Although neither of those fared the best this year, niufh credit is due him for his work along these lines.
